Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Casualty

As you’ll have seen in Sunday’s Scout Notes, Fantasy favourite Marouane Fellaini was the big casualty of accrued yellows this week. A booking in the 2-1 loss at Reading tipped the Belgian over the five-card line and into the ban list for Gameweek 13 – the pileous purveyor of Fantasy points will now miss the visit of a buoyant Norwich and hand his 36.9% Fantasy Premier League (FPL) owners a midfield conundrum this weekend.

Elsewhere on the tightrope, we saw a couple of new faces arrive, with Wigan captain Gary Caldwell the first to fill the void left by the aforementioned Belgian, as his fourth yellow of the season added him to an ever-growing list, while in Sunday’s game at Craven Cottage, the only player with three cautions to his name – Steve Sidwell duly delivered another indiscretion and will receive his tightrope invitation in the Monday morning mail.

On to Monday night and a plethora of players blink wildly on the tightrope office radar system, as West Ham host Stoke in a game that could justify a couple of extra paragraphs should the cards fall a certain way. On the home side, we already have the defensive pairing of James Collins and Winston Reid primed on four bookings, just one slip from a week off, while midfielder Mark Noble sits one away from tightrope notoriety on three. The visitors see a trio of protagonists alongside Noble on three bookings, with Charlie Adam, Ryan Shawcross and Andy Wilkinson also ready to climb aboard.

Welcoming Fellaini into suspension land (no doubt to compare grooming tips), we still have Fabricio Coloccini sitting out the third match of his ban in Gameweek 13. The Newcastle skipper will be followed swiftly through the door by the sheepish pair of Tottenham’s Togolese striker, Emmanuel Adebayor and Fulham’s Texas-born Norwegian, Brede Hangeland, after their game-changing straight red cards bring three game bans that will stretch well into December.

Okay had a tinker with both Baines and Mata out. How do you feel about:
    A) D. Cisse, Mata, Sagna > Suarez, A. Johnson, Cuellar
    B) D. Cisse, Baines, Schwarzer > Suarez, Bardsley, 4.0 keeper
    C) D. Cisse, Baines, Boyce > Suarez, Turner, Cuellar

Never forget that you;re predicting very specific things to happen in the future:

People playing, clean sheets, assists, goals, cards, and bonus points.

Get a player because they're more likely to do well in these regards than their alternatives, not because to scored well so far or are a good player.

Follow price rises/falls, especially at the start of the season.

This wouldn't have been true before but the price rises in the last 2 years has been ridiculously volatile.

Follow price rises at the start of the season is good advice. Really helps in the second half of the season.

        Keep hits to a minimum.

Pick players on set pieces and those who are clearly the best in their team, who are involved in most goals and assists.

Be patient with your players if they score badly for a few weeks...but know when to ditch as well. This one is the hardest...requires luck, a good array of opta stats and a heart of steel at times.

I'm hoping we get a blockbuster double gameweek or something in the 2nd half of the season.

Currently I regret not using it in GW 3 or something. My team value is low compared to many, and I'm a couple of decent players down in my squad as a result of not having as much money to play with as others when making transfers.

Yeah. They are professional footballers, paid millions a year. Being able to control the ball on the run is a minimum requirement. Zlatan's goal against England is the kind of goal that few players could score. Fletcher's is the kind that you would be disappointed if players didn't score.

    Jussi/Beg
    Baines Rafa Cameron Demel Bertrand
    Haz Caz Bale Michu Sterling
    Suarez Ba Crouch

I have a few tweaks to make to my team. Any clues as to what my priorities should be?

    Bego, McCarthy

    Rafael, Baines, Wilson, Gorkss, Hughes

    Bale, Silva, Fellaini, Walters, Sterling

    RVP, Ba, Berbs

I'm thinking I need to get Wilson and Walters out, and not sure if I should just take the money from the Fellaini price rises and run?

Teams fine. Wakters isn't awful to have but there are better options ofc. Keep Fellaini, Wilson and Hughes to Cameron and Cuellar would be sound transfers. Then maybe Walters to Johsnon with dgw in mind.

So much anti-Sunderland, anti-Fletcher, anti-Norwich defence sentiment on here. It's getting tiresome.

Sorry, I should qualify that. I'm very excited for Norwich that they seem to have tightened things up so dramatically. Doesn't seem very long since the running joke was to make all your free transfers towards having a striker who plays against Norwich.

But today it seems half the site is getting in Garrido or Turner this week, and I don't get it. The only CS they've kept on the road was Reading. All the others have come on the road and they only have two home games in the next six. So I don't quite understand why everyone's falling over eachother to chase those clean sheet points.

I'm not saying Norwich are worse than anyone else for Home-Away. The opposite - they're entirely normal and therefore their fixture schedule doesn't look very cleanie-ridden.

The whole site is anti-boring defenders who get the job done. Baines in the scout picks every week. Norwich not represented by a single player in the GK or DEF section in the watchlist. It feels a bit behind the times.

And then there's people groaning about Fletch as if he's somehow useless because he scores goals in a team getting few chances.

Fletcher is a good striker, nobody is denying that. He is not the best striker in the world as you are insuating. Also as an Arsenal fan I know what its like having only one goal provider, and its not pretty. I'm not anti Sunderland, I just dont like the one dimensionalism. If Fletcher has a bad day then you have nothing.

Nor and Stoke have 4 CS at home 1 away. WBA have 4 CS at home. WHAM have 3 at home and 2 away. Not that hard to predict. Sunderland only have 2 away so they aren't as reliable. But as a whole it seems more reliable than hoping for attacking returns from Baines and Raf.

This has got me wondering for a while. What is more important when making transfers?

    Players overall ability or fixtures
Obviously a combination would be nice, but for example: next week Tevez owners are going to start him despite ManC being away to Chelsea. But the others are going for Johnson (who imo has an awful lot to prove) due to Sunderland's fixtures.

      FORM over FIXTURES

Its one of the unwritten rules of FPL

I never followed this. I always do FIXTURES over FORM but it hasn't really been working out recently. Worked better in the past.

          Me too.

Good fixtures + potential = opporunties for better form.

fixtures hve been funny this year, because the big teams are still conceding plenty.

Overall ability trumps fixtures. That transfer may end up stuck in your team for a long time.

Chelsea havent had a clean sheet in months, it's a great fixture for an attacker.
Generally though 3-4 good matches in the next 6-7 matches and having showed a bit of recent form.

      Ability/form first, then fixtures.

Fixtures much more important for defenders ... 🙂
