Captains

The Captain Poll – Gameweek 27

It’s a two-horse race at the top of this week’s Captain Poll so far, with Robin Van Persie edging Theo Walcott into second spot by 34% to 31% ahead of the weekend deadline. The Dutchman has already topped the Poll on 15 occasions already this term; 13 more than any other player, with his average across those fixtures working out at 6.46, or 12.92 with the armband attached. We take a look at the votes cast so and analyse main protagonists’ respective fixtures.

Robin Van Persie

Many have concerns over his game time but, having been handed a brief second-half sub appearance in Monday’s FA Cup win over Reading, the Dutchman will be far from fatigued heading to Loftus Road this weekend. Van Persie will then have a seven day break before United’s next game, at home to Norwich –the Canaries clash comes three days before the second leg of the Champions League showdown with Real Madrid; if Sir Alex Ferguson were to consider the possibility of omitting him from the first XI, it would surely be next weekend.

Harry Redknapp’s side have racked up three back-to-back clean sheets at home, though, keeping out Spurs and City –intriguingly, QPR are one of just two teams Van Persie has yet to pick up attacking returns against this term. With a goal, assist or bonus in each of his last six on the road – in a run that harvested 46 points, or 7.6 ppg – Van Persie’s owners will be confident he can replicate Michu’s 18 point haul against the R’s in the previous Gameweek. Bearing in mind Wayne Rooney is unlikely to feature, according to reports, the Dutchman’s contribution will be more crucial than ever.

Theo Walcott

Fielded up front for the Gunners’ disappointing defeat at the hands of Bayern in midweek, Walcott is expected to shift back to the flank, affording Olivier Giroud the chance to lead the line once again. Despite Arsenal’s recent woes, Villa’s dire defence offers Walcott plenty hope – Paul Lambert’s side have conceded in each of their last 10 and have shipped 15 goals in their last four on the road, with Brad Guzan beaten at least twice in each of that quartet of matches.

Walcott has scored or assisted in nine of his last 10 – an incredible run of consistency – and has served up double figures in three of his previous seven at the Emirates. Giroud could be a real differential contender, though. The Frenchman has produced double figures in two of the last three at the Emirates but with Arsene Wenger’s side low on morale, has just 2% of the votes cast so far, with Santi Cazorla selected by 1%

Gareth Bale

The Tottenham winger rolls up to West Ham on Monday evening in scintillating form. Bale has scored four times in the last three Gameweeks and has registered back-to-back double figure hauls – indeed, five of his seven sets of double figures have been on the road so far, a clear indication of his propensity for points away from White Hart Lane.

With a brace in the first leg of the Europa League win over Lyon, Bale (who has received 17% of the votes) has scored all of Spurs’ last six goals and is up against a Hammers side with a single clean sheet in the last nine Gameweeks. Sam Allardyce’s side could be buoyed by the return of James Collins and have been fairly resilient at home – they have conceded more than a single goal in just three of their 13 fixtures at Upton Park.

Dimitar Berbatov

The Bulgarian has just 2% of the votes cast ahead of a home clash with Stoke. Berbatov has decent form at the Cottage in recent weeks, having scored or assisted in three of the last four in front of his own fans but a move to “the hole” last time out, affording Hugo Rodallega to lead the line against Norwich, is a real concern. Stoke’s recent defensive record boosts Berbatov’s appeal, though; the Potters are without a clean sheet in eight matches now.

Moussa Sissoko

Newcastle’s January acquisition has hit the ground running, with attacking returns in all three of his appearances. Sissoko squares up to Southampton at St James’ Park next and will be looking to replicate the home debut display against Chelsea which harvested a 15 point return. The Saints are no easy touch, though; you’d need to go back to Gameweek 10 to find the last time they were beaten by more than a single goal and arrive on Tyneside having swept aside City. Nevertheless, there’s been a definite upturn in form since a host of new arrivals and even Papiss Cisse has earned 1% of votes, despite scoring two home goals all season.

Other Contenders

Sergio Aguero has accrued just 1% of the votes cast ahead of City’s clash with Chelsea. Aguero has been in decent form, though; his last five starts have produced three goals and a pair of assists, with two sets of double figures also thrown in.

As Everton prepare to travel to Norwich, Marouane Fellaini has received just 1% of the votes. The Belgian has scored in just one of his last eight appearances, though, and with the Canaries conceding just once in their last three, he’ll need to step up if he’s to return to scoring ways.

A mere 1% have opted for Juan Mata as Chelsea travel to City. Having been handed a brief sub role against Wigan last time out, though, he will surely start this one – Mata has produced three sets of double figures in his last five road trips, scoring or assisting in each of them.

Rickie Lambert is another who has earned a surprisingly low 1%. The Southampton forward travels to Newcastle with a superb away record – he has scored in five of his last six on the road and with the Magpies registering one clean sheet in their last five at St James’ Park, Lambert’s owners will be confident of further returns.

Edin Dzeko and Romelu Lukaku are further down the list, despite some solid displays of late. The City forward has started six of the last seven and has scored in five of those first XI appearances ahead of the visit of Chelsea, while Lukaku welcomes Sunderland to the Hawthorns having scored or assisted in five of the last six Gameweeks. As his display at Anfield in the previous match showed, the Belgian is more than capable of producing even if handed a sub role.

I saw a replay and Sissoko was awarded the penalty for being brought down by the keeper trying to get the ball. I thought it was real close but probably not a pk. Sammy Amaobi scored the pk. Other than that, the ticker said that he had one shot on target inside the box on the right side. He still seems to be very consistent.

you reckon barfa will dent his point scoring potential when he's back coz i think Sissoko may get pushed back to CM.

I think that Sissoko is a big reason why they have started to win games, which didn't necessarily happen when barfa was playing. If its not broke, dont fix it. Besides, I think that Gutierez should be omitted so that barfa will simply slot into the wing position leaving Sissoko in the hole.

Last time that Arsenal lost consecutive matches against City and Chelsea, they rebounded with 5 goals against West Ham at home. Reckon that Ashton Villa at home equates to WHU in these circumstances. Walcott got a goal and an assist in that game. He is starting to edge out Bale for that captain spot.

Bale ia due a bad game i think and Walcott has not scored in the last two PL games. so he is due some goals. my gut says Walcott even though i have Rvp and Bale. i reckon you should always follow your gut and not overanalyze things.

He missed a sitter against Lyon in the home leg then scored two free kicks with so much flair that even Queen Elizabeth applauded from her palace.

I'm not sure missing a sitter in a match is a sign of a dip in form. Suarez missed some sitters against Zenit first leg and BAM he's back to banging them in just like Bale. These players are getting lots of chances...that's ultimately what matters.

Does it worry you with Kun playing Chelsea? The game was a 0-0 draw last time they played. And I would still consider Kun to be in mediocre form overall, despite scoring two against Leeds. It was Leeds! I have Aguero so it'd be cool to get another perspective

Suarez is mental, a basket case.

When things are going well and there's something to fight for, he's stable and eager to play.
Liverpool are adrift in the doldrums now, biding time waiting for next season which means Suarez will become unhinged and probably get sent off next match.

Wow that's probably more downcast than is actually the case. I don't disagree that Suarez is always a risk of bad behavior but surely they can't just totally bottle it. I don't see Rodgers allowing that mentality.

I have 4.9 for a defender. Suggestion please?
My other defenders are Clyne Davies Enrique Pearce.
    Keepers are Bunn and Mignolet.

Thinking either Dawson or Turner. Any other suggestion?

    Federici (Begovic)
    Zabaleta, Clyne, Demel (Davies, Enrique)
    Bale, Mata, Santi, Puncheon (Michu)
    Aguero, Fletcher (Sturridge)

    2.7m 0 FT

    What's your pick:
    A. Field 10 (play safe, my 11th player 'scores' an automatic 4 pointers)
    B. Davies to Turner (getting the NOR defense share, but personally the fixtures aren't great)
    C. Enrique/Davies to Debuchy (great fixtures but probably not quite there yet to justify a hit)
    D. Sturridge to Giroud (potential GW29 blank still manageable and looking to get Suarez back later, but not sure about doubling up on ARS due to poor form)

    Cheers!

What one was thinking after WBA is irrelevant. Suarez has since gone on to grab two assists and three goals in 3 games. Surely this proves that sometimes patience and perspective is the name of the game. Most would have knee-jerked him out after WBA if that was a single gameweek for instance.

Sturridge was playing CF against Swansea yet he only scored due to being handed a penalty generously by Gerrard. Often it's class that still wins out and Suarez has that in abundance. What is your point exactly? Suarez does not have to play up front to produce...just like Walcott.

Sturridge may be leading the line but he's raw whereas Suarez is the finished product and has much more than Sturridge has all round. It's not as simple as saying Suarez is now not CF and therefore not going to score or assist goals. He's integral and continues to have chances galore. You're making a silly point and then saying I'm nostalgic for old days...nothing much has changed!

You're making it up as you go along based on whether the player is in your team. Not much has changed. 🙄

Do you even fact check yourself before saying this stuff? Only this week the comparison article (which you didn't really need, you could have just checked the stats yourself like I did) showed Suarez was taking less shots than he was as CF. The extra shots were going to, big surprise, Sturridge. You're making the silly point, that someone is just as good when they're getting fewer goalscoring chances, are almost 11m AND someone 3m cheaper is playing in front of them.

                  Now sort yourself out.

                    Sort myself out?? With what?

I'm not a member so I don't have the luxury of your comparison tools or member's articles. Stats don't tell you everything after all. And of course I'm making this stuff up as I go along...I've only my own eyes and powers of observation to work with. And when a player is in your team you pay extra special attention to their threat levels and influence in games. I may not have the cold hard facts but I know the stats and what I've seen. To me there is no proof yet to this theory that Sturridge is going to steal Suarez's points and outscore him generally in FPL. Suarez's stock hasn't decreased just because they now have another decent striker to play with him. It's actually made him look even better at times. It's a matter of opinion at the end of the day and your dismissive nature/attitude is hardly bringing much to the table.

but Sturridge is 3.0M cheaper, Returns will be similar over teh last 10gws imo. Maybe Suarez is worth 10-15 pts more over that stretch. imo the money saved can be used to make up the points elsewhere.

Cisse is worth a shout imo. NEW vs SOT game this week has surely got goals in it. but Giroud looks good to me this week as well and may well justify the hit. but who you take out is the real concern as all of pog, bentekke and lukaku have decent fixtures. but gun to my head, i will take out pog out of those three.

      hope that helps.

    My Team:
    Beg (full),
O’brien (TOT) shawcross (full) Clyne (new) Martin R (EVE)
noble (TOT), mata (city) bale (whu) Walcott (C) (AV)
    lukuku (SUN) aguero (CHE)
Bench: Jaas (TOT) Suarez (-), Michu (-) Davies(-)

What do you think of this time for the final leg?
just did sturridge->ageuro and enrique-> Martin R (norwich)
Martin R a good pick? have not heard much of a mention from him from anyone

will go lukaku-> sturridge next gw
    and then noble->puncheon
which is my ideal team leaving me 0.0 in the bank =D

Papiss Cisse is a bit of an interesting bandwagon this week. Did a two week punt on him for two of potentially the best fixtures of the season - RDG avl. He scored one goal but missed chance after chance. Depending on how you see it he's due or in poor form - toon fans I know say the latter. Southampton pressed City to death in their win, I think Toon could find it a very tricky match to score.

I really feel that the Toon are the up and will make a late season push.

Big win over Chelsea, progression in the Europa, new signings, return to health for their main men, etc.

It really looks promising for the club.

They're on the up alright. I wonder if Cisse will be the main beneficiary though. It's not usually the striker at the top of a 4-2-3-1 who dominates the goals. If you look at City, Arsenal, Chelsea the goals are pretty spread out. Liverpool wins over Norwich and Swansea are examples too.

Check how many shots on target Newcastle had at home to Chelsea, they're certainly a different beast at home.

I am thinking of doing Michu> Sissiko and GJ>Dawson or Clyne. (-4)

I can field 11 without taking a hit too, but I got Azpi and wat i heard was that he might get rested against City. So, should i take the hit and play 3-5-2 (benching azpi) or no hit which means 4-4-2 (playing azpi and just doin GJ> Clyne or Dawson.; Michu bench)

He will not be travelling according to reports. Tis why you don;t make early transfers... even for a measly 0.1

I wouldn't trust the FPL flagging that much. They're usually behind FFS.

Haven't has a chance to see the article. Would people say Rooney is definitely out? Is it too much to expect SAF to shed some light on it in his Presser?

I like the DZ because people actually reply to one another, whereas at other times guys are basically talking to themselves. Was just wondering, why is everyone in the DZ tonight? Different time zone? Can't sleep? Nightshift? I'm up through the night taking watch on a fishing boat in the north sea and the DZ helps pass the time. You guys?

Catch langoustine ( large shrimp). Got a crew of 5 guys with me. Installing Internet on the boat means I never miss the late injury news and last minute captain changes!

I got Quiz for the Day for you guys.

One day there are 2 things called Michu and Sturridge. The rules are you have to sell one of them and then buy the one that you sell again. if you don't sell one of them you will be killed. and you can't ask for higher or lower price.

Someone offer the price of Michu for 7.6 million and someone also offer Sturridge for 7.5 million.
However if that guy buy Michu for 7.6, the buyer will sell Michu for 8.4 to you. and if the guy Buy Sturridge for 7.5 million, the buyer will sell Sturridge for 7.7 million to you again.

Which one you will sell and buy again? Michu or Sturridge?
