The Stock Check

The Stock Check – Saturday – Part Two

Liverpool hammer Wigan at the DW, as Luis Suarez sweeps aside the lacklustre Latics with a hat-trick. Stewart Downing and Philippe Coutinho also pick up the points as the Reds win on the road for the first time since Gameweek 20:

On the Up

Luis Suarez
Reinstalled to the lone forward role as Daniel Sturridge missed out with a knock, the Uruguayan ran riot at the DW this evening. Suarez’s hat-trick took him to 21 goals for the season – two ahead of Robin Van Persie in the race for the Golden Boot. With maximum bonus looking assured, Suarez will now be just 14 points behind the Dutchman at the top of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) standings and with form, fixtures and guaranteed game time on his side, could well end the season as number one.

Philippe Coutinho
The January signing from Inter scored on his first start for the Reds in the previous league match with Swansea and maintained his strong attacking form with a pair of assists. With Brendan Rodgers keen to protect Raheem Sterling, Coutinho could well be set to feature more prominently in the first XI from here on in and looks a decent mid-price option at 6.5 in FPL.

Stewart Downing
An early opener added to his assist against Swansea in Liverpool’s last league encounter, meaning Downing has now produced returns in back-to-back Gameweeks for the first time this season. At 5.7, he could be another option, with starts certainly looking assured – he has been named in the first XI in each of the last 13.

Glen Johnson
Subject of our recent members article, which drew comparisons with Jose Enrique’s numbers, it was Johnson’s turn to deliver today with a smart assist for Suarez’s third goal which could also see him figure amongst the bonus points. That was the right-backs fifth assist of the season and, with his Gameweek 29 fixture secure, Johnson seems set to earn a batch of new suitors after this timely haul.

Going Down

Daniel Sturridge
Brendan Rodgers’ decision to omit the former Chelsea man is clearly something of a worry for his owners. Sturridge has missed two out of the last three now and with his manager clearly keen to protect him from further damage as he nurses a troublesome thigh problem, his game time is looking less assured as Sturridge shows a propensity to pick up knocks. With the front three all impressing, Rodgers clearly has no need to rush Sturridge back although he will be expected to be in the frame for the Gameweek 29 visit of Spurs.

Wigan Home Form
It seems last week’s 3-0 win at Reading may be something of a false dawn. Many had believed Roberto Martinez’s side were on the verge of their annual surge up the table but instead they capitulated – Wigan have now conceded 31 goals in front of their own fans, four more than any other side.

    I have a novel idea regarding our FT this week. I currently have 10 starters but with my FT I could have 11. However It might be a good idea to save the transfer and get in a future DGWer instead with the saved transfer. The situation doesn't change and it means I don't have to sell a future DGWer such as Walcott or Lampard. Here's an example of what I mean.

    Walcott -> GW29er = +1 fixture in GW29 - 1 fixture for a future DGW (2 games total)

    Keep Walcott = 0 fixture in GW29 + 1 extra fixture in a DGW (2 games total) + a transfer saved for a future DGWer = an extra fixture as a result of a DGW (3 games total)

    Does this make sense?

          For me its either replace Demel to field 11 or stick. (Already benching RVP Mata Walcott).

          Easy call. Might as well save and use it toward the DGW

            But what I'm saying is, that you can get 3 fixtures out of 2 game weeks by saving a transfer this week compared to just 2 fixtures from 2 game weeks.

                    Eh? I'm not talking about hits. I'm talking about maximizing the use of FT's to create an extra fixture for yourself. Do you understand?

                    Selling the player back to Walcott the week after give you an extra game at expense of 2 transfers.

                    Ok so here are two scenarios, hopefully this is clearer. Lets work from a team of 3 innitial players of Walcott, Sturridge & Sissoko and to make it easier the DGW in GW30 (it doesn't really matter when the DGW is, the outcome is still the same)

                    A. (GW 29) FT Walcott(0)-> Sess(1)
                    + Sturridge(1), Sissoko(1) already in side
                    = 3 fixtures from 3 players for GW29

                    (DGW30) FT Sess(1) -> Walcott(2)
                    + Sturridge(1), Sissoko(1) already in the side
                    = 4 fixtures from 3 players for DGW30

                    Answer for scenario A. = 7 fixtures from the 3 players over 2GW's

                    B. (GW 29) Walcott(0) + 1FT
                    + Sturridge(1), Sissoko(1) already in the side
                    = 2 fixtures from 3 players for GW 29

                    (DGW30) FT1 Sturridge(1) -> Kone(2) + FT2 Sissoko(1) -> Fellaini(2) + + Walcott(2) already in the side
                    = 6 fixtures from 3 players for GW30

                    Answer for scenario B. = 8 fixtures from 3 players over 2 GW's

      True but its all about points in the end, not fixtures. Depends who you transfer in for Walcott. If they have a double figure GW it's the right decision. If not its the wrong one. The sum total of these right and wrong decisions determine where you finish up at the end of the season.

      This week I made the bad decision to captain Lambert but got away with it cos I kept the big Fella and have Suarez. Hopefully I'll be as lucky next week 🙂

        I think I need to explain myself better. My point is that by saving a transfer this week and getting in a DGW next week you actually maximise the use of that FT. So basically you can get 3 fixtures from 2 players over the course of 2GW's compared to 2 fixtures from 2 players over the course of 2GW's

          Yeah, I agree. But, the extra fixture means nothing if you pick, or captain, the wrong player. I could take an 8pt hit this week and another one for the first DGW to undo it all and out score you both weeks. For instance, what if Mata has gone off the boil now and those who get rid this week end up doing better than those who hold for the DGW?

          Of course, that strategy can go all pear shaped on you. It's risky. It's also more fun!

      This makes perfect sense. 😀 But I think it depends on your replacement too. Go for it if you found a good replacements. (Let's say Dzeko->Suarez)
      I have 2 FT but I might save one and do Fellaini/Mata->Sissoko to field 10 this week.

          I really dislike the ESPN version. So hard to find relevant info, and the pricing is a non-factor really. I like the game Torresmagic posted much better (after 1 GW). The interface is almost exactly like FPL. The rules are different though.

          yeah but that MF spot is far more valuable. Benteke could feasibly rival any 3rd striker. N'Zogbia can't touch the 5th mid.

    Would you go as far as a 8 point hit this week to field 11 or just field 10 for a 4 point hit? or 9 for no hit?

      With your team I'd do a 4 pt hit. RVP->Suarez and then maybe Walcott->Sissoko? What were you thinking. I would take a 4 point hit and field 10

        I already have Sissoko. I was thinking of doing Aguero->Suarez and Mata->Bale and also Cameron->Wilson for a 4 pt hit. I have 2FT.

          Not sure how I missed that. I wouldn't take a hit- nice that you have 2 FT. The Suarez and Mata transfers look pretty good, although I think Mata will have a nice run of form after this week's blank. There are really only mid-priced options in midfield this week outside of Bale- Pilk/Snod, Brunt

    Heads up, the MLS manger subs are not like UCL. You can only change players who has not played. It's basically just a way to get slightly more control of your automatic substitutions.

    I want to propose a hypothetical proposal which would advise everybody to save a transfer this week in order to get an extra fixture down the track. Lets say you have 10 starters this week but you could get 11 if you sell a blank player with your FT

    Here are the two scenarios, hopefully this is clear. Lets work from a team of 3 innitial players of Walcott, Sturridge & Sissoko and to make it easier the DGW is in GW30 (it doesn’t really matter when the DGW is, the outcome is still the same). Also this is purely a mathematical explanation to show how you can get an extra fixture, don't read anything into the players I have used in this example.

    THE STANDARD APPROACH

    (GW 29) FT Walcott(0)-> Sess(1)
    + Sturridge(1), Sissoko(1) already in side
    = 3 fixtures from 3 players for GW29

    (DGW30) FT Sess(1) -> Walcott(2)
    + Sturridge(1), Sissoko(1) already in the side
    = 4 fixtures from 3 players for DGW30

    Answer for scenario A. = 7 fixtures from the 3 players over 2GW’s

    THE SAVE TRANSFER APPROACH

    (GW 29) Walcott(0) + 1FT
    + Sturridge(1), Sissoko(1) already in the side
    = 2 fixtures from 3 players for GW 29

    (DGW30) FT1 Sturridge(1) -> Kone(2) + FT2 Sissoko(1) -> Fellaini(2) + + Walcott(2) already in the side
    = 6 fixtures from 3 players for GW30

    Answer for scenario B. = 8 fixtures from 3 players over 2 GW’s

    CONCLUSION: By saving a transfer this GW you earn yourself an extra fixture for free!
