Scout Report – Jesus Navas

Manchester City continued to add to their first-team squad yesterday with the acquisition of Jesus Navas from Sevilla. The 27-year-old, who is currently in the US with the Spain squad ahead of this month’s Confederation Cup, is City’s second big-money signing in the past week after Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho arrived at the Etihad from Shakhtar Donetsk:

With Manuel Pellegrini expected to be announced as the new City manager by tomorrow, City’s pre-season plans are beginning to pick up pace following the dismissal of Roberto Mancini towards the end of the previous campaign. In an interview with the club’s official website, Navas – who is believed to have been cost City a fee in the region of £15m – went on to say:

“Manchester City is an exciting project and this is the right moment for me to take this step. I’m very happy with the opportunity and the decision. The Premier League is a competition where the football is very fast and will suit the way I play. I’m really looking forward to it. I’m going to a great club in England and I want to continue developing my game there. The club has put a lot of faith in me and I want to repay them out on the pitch.”

The History

A product of the Sevilla Youth Academy, Navas joined his hometown club at the age of 15 and made his first-team debut three years later at the end of the 2003-04 season. Firmly established as a regular by 2005-06, the winger has spent a total of 10 campaigns at the La Liga outfit, starting 30 or more times in all but one of the previous five seasons, when injury curtailed his game time over 2009-10.

Navas arrives at City on the back of a less-than-prolific campaign. The winger failed to find the net at all last season and supplied just six assists as Sevilla finished ninth in the table but there’s no doubt his creativity from the flank has been crucial to his side in recent years. In three of the last five seasons, he’s provided 13 or more assists and overall, has chipped in with 24 goals and 62 assists over 276 La Liga appearances.

In terms of silverware, Navas won six major trophies over his time with Sevilla – two UEFA Cups, a UEFA Super Cup, two Spanish Cups and a Spanish Super Cup. He’s also represented his country on 23 occasions, producing two goals and six assists, and has helped his nation to the 2010 World Cup, with the European Championship following a couple of years later.

The Prospects

Navas’ arrival certainly looks likely to afford City an extra dimension on the flanks. While the likes of David Silva, Samir Nasri and James Milner were utilised out wide by Roberto Mancini, none of the trio possess the speed and directness of the new boy – with Fernandinho also bringing a more dynamic edge to central midfield, the former champions seem set for an evolution under the incoming Pellegrini, with a much-needed injection of pace throughout the team.

Both Silva and Nasri may possess the trickery but both had a tendency to move into the middle when on the ball, with City all-too-often lacking any real width. Opponents were able to nullify the danger by packing the middle of the park in Mancini’s final season as his side became a little too predictable in possession – having scored 93 times in their title-winning 2011/12, City found the net just 66 times last term.

Navas’ introduction is clearly part of a tactical plan to utilise the width more efficiently, creating space and stretching opponents’ backlines, which, from a Fantasy perspective, will hopefully be good news after the disappointment of the previous campaign. In terms of Navas as an individual prospect, however, he’ll find it difficult to persuade us to initially invest, given that Silva, Yaya Toure and potentially Nasri will also be vying for our attentions in the City midfield.

Furthermore, his price isn’t likely to be cheap across the Fantasy games, with a cost of 8.5 to 9.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) anticipated. With Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott, Juan Mata and Eden Hazard all offering explosive potential in the premium bracket, it seems, in all likelihood, there will be better value to be found for our five man midfields as we look to balance budgets.

Ironically, the introduction of Navas and a more expansive style of play could, in turn, bring Sergio Aguero back onto our Fantasy radars. Having started 2012/13 costing 11.5 in FPL, the Argentine could conceivably drop to 10.5 or 11.0, potentially making him a viable option once again for those unwilling to fork out the expected 13.5 for Robin Van Persie. If he can overcome the serious bouts of homesickness that have blighted his international career, Navas has the potential to be a major player for City next term, though whether he can persuade Fantasy managers he’s worthy of a place looks another matter altogether.

with all these world cup qualifying rounds going on at the moment.

who do people see as being the favourites? and what teams do you think will cause some upsets (the dark horses some might say)...

personally i have the germans down to win it, with belgium and japan to shock a few of the so called bigger teams.

Argentina to win it for me.

Belgium get talked about a lot, they'll probably only get to the QFs though.
Colombia will surprise people I think, very talented team.

watching argentina in their last few qualifiers doesn't give me much hope for brazil. they need to find some form very soon.

completely agree with columbia also. wit the likes of falcoao, martinez and rodriguez, its hard to look past them.

Japan to continue their rise to serious footballing power having comprehensively outplayed Denmark last WC.

Am unsure about Germans managing the win despite their quality. The team has probably deserved to win several tournaments since 2006 but has choked when it mattered, particularly against those pesky Italians.

Speaking of which, I would not rule out the Italians delivering the goods again when least expected to.

      Think Brazil will disappoint.

watching the likes of honda, kagawa and okazaki against australia recently has lead me to believe this also. even though they were not fully fit (and it was only the socceroos), they still ran rings around us, which could bide well for them when fully fit and used to one another's style of play.

i see your point about the germans, but i still have this hunch that they will gel together well in brazil and be a very tough opponent.

the italians are always there and abouts. i really hope australia get them in the group stage (not holding any grudges or anything though), haha.

        brazil...i agree.

  5. Strikers v Midfielders.
    Al Pacino

Sparked by the formation debate, I decided to see what was better: Strikers or Midfielders?

I only used last year's data, as it was very interesting with rising power to the midfield. Yet many believe strikers still hold the power and the core points.

Top 3 Strikers: RvP, Suarez, Lambert. Average points - 220.3
Top 5 Midfielders: Bale, Mata, Cazorla, Walcott, Hazard. Average points - 210

So it certainly suggests strikers hold the dominance. However, I wasn't happy to accept it at that. Due to RvP's stunning season, and his 50 more points than Suarez, it was obvious that the data doesn't show an accurate reflection on the important of position. However, Bale also did very well and was miles ahead of Mata, so he's been taken out too.

Top 3 Strikers (minus RvP): Suarez, Lambert, Tevez. Average points - 189.3
Top 5 Midfielders (minus Bale): Mata, Santi, Walcott, Hazard, Michu. Average points - 198.2

So that changed a lot ;). This shows that perhaps the midfield is better rounded, and there is more potential for points.

I decided to take one more stat, which was top 10 for each. This included RvP and Bale, so the strikers should have a slight advantage. However, the result showed different.

    Average for top 10 Strikers - 176.1
    Average for top 10 Midfielders - 189.5

    Massive gap there :o.

In conclusion, with the uncertainty of picking players at the start, it seems like you're better off picking 5 midfielders rather than 3 strikers. As evidence shows, picking 3 lower scorers in the top 10 strikers is more likely to score less than 5 lower scorers in the top 10 midfielders.

Yeah, decent... other things to consider are where the captain choices lie... I felt much more comfortable captaining RVP or Suarez than Bale or Mata last season.

Indeed, captaining RvP is a lot wiser than captaining a midfielder, as he scored nearly 20 more than the best midfielder. However captains are always going to have a significant impact, and we all (rightly so) are more comfortable having a striker with the armband because we know they'll get shots.

But is the confidence misplaced? I captained RVP a lot last season and as a result, missed out on the following VCs:

          Suarez (20), Cazorla (23), Baines (17)

Yeah, I got a few RVP (13)s but he was more consistent than he was explosive, for the most part.

Suarez is one you probably should've gotten, however for the other two they were more ambiguous. You are pretty much never going to captain a defender, and when Caz got those 4 assists, Walcott was the man to have.

RvP's main attraction was his consistency, he wasn't like Lambert who had huge weeks, then some quiet ones, then a few more decent weeks. Suarez, and then even Sturridge, provided similar consistency.

Captaincy makes or breaks your GW, even stats won't help you make the right choice with the armband 😀

Tough call for captaincy that is, no wonder you went for RvP, better form and at home. Also begs the question of form or fixtures? Undoubtedly Norwich is the easier fixture, but surely without the form it's more of a risk?

      +1 for the effort

But that was last season. I don't think you can use that for the coming season. Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea, Everton and you could say City were without a dominant striker. That looks like it will change for this season.

Valid point regarding the possible shift in emphasis for some of the major teams - do you think if Arsenal were to sign Higuain that would reduce the appeal of Walcott/Cazorla? Likewise for the other clubs?

Definitely for Arsenal. Walcott, Cazorla, Wilshere, Podolski are all creative players that were tasked with scoring goals because RVP was gone and Giroud was inconsistent. If you put Higuain in there - a 20+ goals a season striker - he'll dominate Arsenal's FPL points imo.

You could say the same for Chelsea if Cavani comes but slightly less so because Lampard, Hazard and Mata are a bit different to Arsenal's midfielders

I suppose it depends whether the teams score the same volume of goals but have a greater number scored by the striker or whether the new striker simply adds to the tally. You're obviously anticipating the first scenario, I wonder if there's precedent from previous seasons.

Arsenal scored more goals last year than with RVP so on that basis they should score less if they get another Marquee singing.

The thing is, it depends on if the style of play were to change. More often that not Walcott shone even when on the wing, it seems he's adapted to anywhere in the attack. Cazorla was never handed the top role, but was an incredible asset and provided plenty of points. Giroud was racking up the points at one point, but it didn't hinder Walcott/Caz, as either usually always had a part to play in the game.

Likewise with Spurs, I can't see Bale's attacking role ever being reduce, or Hazard's really. I don't think strikers limit the midfield, it just allows another (possibly better) avenue to explore for a club.

Arsenal bought Giroud, Chelsea bought Ba, Everton had Jelavic from the previous January, City had too much rotation. Every year there are signings, and if we believed speculation then we'd be doomed. There's always going to be high profile linking to clubs, it happens every summer.

If Arsenal sign Higuain, Spurs sign Damiao, Chelsea sign Cavani and City sell Tevez, then I'd be inclined to agree with you. For now all i can go on is the stats.

I agree, but all those teams will look at what part of their team struggled last season and for all of them it will be not having a striker score ~20 goals and so over the summer will try to correct that. Impossible to say if they will, but I'd be surprised if midfielders dominated FPL so much again this year

I agree, I feel this year was either anomalous with the midfield bearing so many points, or if it's a breakthrough for a new style of play where teams build a quality midfield that is able to score higher. We see teams playing 1 striker more often these days, meaning if prem teams play 5 in the middle, we should too. It all depends, but it's nice to know the possibilities 🙂

Yes I think so, I believe that the emphasis on strikers scoring is no longer there, as teams are trying to spread this responsibility out in order to be able to sustain scoring even with an injury or two. I believe after Euro 2012 many saw Spain's strategy as an ideal, and therefore are emulating it in a way.

It remains to be seen whether this is sustained, but if so then the bulk of your points will be from midfield rather than attack.

Good post Al Pacino but if you want to make it really relevant get your membership up to speed and see if you can dig the stats out for previous seasons to give us a real hint as to where the main points lie please.

Personally I remember a great post from Pure Olivia which recommended only two marquee signings which should give you a viable capt alternative each gw. The reason for this was value i.e. points per million and the only way you really got value for RVP was through captaining him (to dbl his points) as his points per million was not fantastic. With this in mind if you can identify and bring in the top two pt scorers in fpl it doesn't matter what position they are in you can then spread your cash on the value players i.e. best pts per million players in order to get the most points for your team.

That's a very good point, and I think that's a fantastic strategy. However, the problem is identifying which marquee players will be the most beneficial. I feel like this season there could be more than ever, especially if there world class signing rumours bear any fruit.

Good comparison of top 5 / top 10 but not representative of a real team, because the 5 mids you name would have been difficult if not impossible to hold simultaneously. Check the pricings out.

Additionally there's a pretty wide range of goalscoring strikers to choose from that you can rotate between. As a result you can pick up points from a variety of strikers who don't individually finish in the top 5 etc, and still outperform holding one mid all season through all their good and bad patches (something which is very difficult to do in practice too).

A very good point, however the top 2 forwards cost more than the top 2 midfielders, meaning that perhaps both of those aren't viable either.

Out of the top 10, 3 strikers were more than 10m, 2 mids were over 10m. However, 5 strikers were below 8m by the end, only 3 mids were the same. However, once you decide what strategy you are playing, you're likely to end up with either 2/3 big hitting mids and 1 big striker, or 2 big hitting strikers and 1/2 mids. Unless you go for RvP and Bale, in which case you may just about get one big hitter and then the rest is moderate.

What really interests me is the fact that Bale and RvP represent each category very well, and make it a lot more difficult to decide which is more worthy of investment.

Yeah good stats mate, those two configurations of big hitters are likely.

I tried 3-5-2 and it worked very nicely for a few weeks but then I got the inevitable quiet spells from the likes of Mata, Walcott, Michu etc. At that point it becomes quite difficult to keep a 8/9m mid firing blanks. Certainly more difficult than keeping a Lukaku/Benteke/Lambert.

Am thinking reclassifications may hold the key to the debate.

I see what you mean, price tag determines your patience. Perhaps why i kept lambert for so long.

Indeed, can you imagine the outrage if Bale was classified as a striker? 😆

Dark horses for me are Colombia and Uruguay.

Any team that's in the group playing in Manaus will be done for. Average temperature is around 32 degrees with 99% humidity. Personally, I want to see England drawn in that group just to see all their fans struggle in the heat.

EDIT: Not just me. Out of interest, I decided to compare the PageSpeed scores of FFS to a few other sites. Here's how things stand.

      Facebook: 98/100
      Twitter: 96/100
      My own site: 95/100
      Goal.com : 92/100
      FFS: 83/100
Liverpool Homepage: 79/100 (with lots of flash and stuff)

      Food for thought perhaps?

      McShane??? Really?

Bent -depends on where he ends up, Sturridge, not sure if he's fit, think just Coutinho is enough for me. Kagawa over Lampard.

The main problem I have with a Vorm/Marshall rotation is, Swansea were better away last year in terms of CS
