The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk- Sunday

West Ham defy all expectations to emerge from the Lane with all three points, with a defensive rock and cut-price midfielder key to the visitors’ win. For the hosts, Andre Villas-Boas’ decision to drop a big-money Spaniard is set to spark a scramble for the exits over the international break:

The Game Changer

The Hammers recovered from last week’s loss at Hull to register a highly-unexpected win at the Lane. Today’s stunning 3-0 triumph helped Sam Allardyce’s side to their fourth clean sheet in seven and turned the form book on its head as the visitors picked up the points for the first time since the season opener against Cardiff.

Fundamental to the Hammers’ performance was Winston Reid. With James Tomkins once again preferred alongside him in the heart of the back-four, the Kiwi centre-half opened the scoring midway through the second period and helped keep a host of big-money signings at bay in a superb rearguard showing.

With Joey O’Brien making way for Guy Demel in Allardyce’s XI, Reid is now the only defender to have started all seven of the Hammers opening league fixtures. Granted, Razvan Rat seems to have recently established himself as first-choice left-back but Reid – at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League – offers a guaranteed security of starts into one of the most resilient backlines around. Up to 38 FPL points after picking up maximum bonus, Reid has mainly been under the radar and is owned by less than 3% of FPL managers – he may have City and Swansea up next but today’s display highlights the Hammers are more than capable of picking up the points regardless of the fixture.

The Underused

Today’s outstanding solo effort at the Lane highlighted the raw talent of Ravel Morrison. For so long, it seemed the former United man was destined for the footballing scrapheap after a series of off-field misdemeanours threatened to end his promising career but, under the guidance of Allardyce, it seems the penny has finally dropped.

We’d high expectations at the start of the campaign after the midfielder excelled over the summer but the bandwagon stalled as Allardyce put the brakes on his early-season game time. Having now started each of the last four, though, today’s strike means Morrison has now scored twice in the previous three Gameweeks and with his form flourishing, investors are likely to come running for the 4.4 priced FPL prospect, with an ownership of less than 2% summing up his differential appeal.

With United’s Adnan Januzaj also arriving on our radars this week, it seems Morrison could be set to offer us another cut-price prospect for our five-man midfields, in a season that has already seen Aaron Ramsey, Robbie Brady and Ross Barkley excel in the budget bracket. Indeed, it was telling to see that Stewart Downing’s return to the first XI forced Matt Jarvis on to the bench – a sign of Morrison’s growing importance to the Hammers cause.

The Selection Poser

Without a goal in open play in the league this season, it was still, nonetheless, somewhat surprising to see Roberto Soldado make way for Jermain Defoe in this afternoon’s starting line-up. The latter’s scoring exploits in both domestic and European cup competitions had clearly staked a claim for inclusion but we’d expected Andre Villas-Boas to keep faith with his big-money signing from Valencia as Spurs welcomed West Ham to the Lane.

Instead, Soldado was afforded no more than a 15-minute second-half cameo appearance as Defoe toiled up top in the shock 3-0 loss. It leaves Spurs with a record of just four goals scored in the last five league matches and, in spite of a schedule that sees them square up to Villa, Hull and Newcastle in the next four, today’s team sheet is set to spark significant sales of Soldado right across the Fantasy games.

Still sitting on 14% ownership, an exodus looks on the cards for the 9.5 priced new boy over the international fortnight now, as Fantasy managers look to load up on similarly priced options such as Daniel Sturridge and Olivier Giroud, whilst Romelu Lukaku’s stunning form for Everton should also convince plenty to take the plunge. Defoe’s poor showing may, ironically, have merely strengthened Soldado’s position to start Gameweek 8 but few will be prepared to wait two weeks to test such a theory.

many people have found dis season difficult(including me).Either
    A) we're failing to adapt to new FPL bonus system which favours central defenders(personally I prefer LB OR RB as dey give more assists)
    B) normal big hitters are not firing uptill now(like walcott, michu,RVP,mata, silva, hazardetc.)
    C) we have failed to accept that CDM(toure ramsey) or lower bracket mids(brady ramsey barkley) can/will fire week in week out
D)lastly,is this the worst premierleague season as every big team is struggling (esp. united che and city)

What do you think Nick? Take the risk and do Soldado -> Lukaku for a free now, or wait for deadline and potentially lose out on 0.4-0.5? I don't like the early transfers, but for half a mill it actually seems worth the risk.

I'm in the same predicament. I think I will do the trade early. Lukaku will probably rise a full 0.3, Soldado has dropped 0.1 already but I can see him dropping at least 0.1 during the break. The price difference is too big for me to wait in this case, just gonna have to risk it.

The traditional, cheap, 3 at the back defense looks like it is again the way to go.

    GW1 - 7CS
    GW2 - 9CS
    GW3 - 9CS
    GW4 - 7CS
    GW5 - 6CS
    GW6 - 3CS
    GW7 - 5CS

    GW 1-4 AVG CS = 8
    GW 5-7 AVG CS = 4.7

There has been a lot of talk about going with 4 at the back, especially at around GW 4 this season as they racked up the points early on. However, it appears as though the huge amount of early CS's are just an anomaly and the traditional 3 at the back is still the best options. As we are seeing less CS and more goals, the BAPS for defs are also disappearing.

Yeah the milfs have been poor this season. The budget ones have dominated, even with the likes of barkley, whitt and brady blanking we now see amalfitano, ravel and adnan performing. I think we just need to wait for the likes of walcott to get back and be patient with players like michu and eriksen. In the long run I like the look of Ozil, Wally, Michu, 2xBudget mids.

I think the best thing is to have a squad comprising of 4 good defenders, 2 premium mids , 3 mid price mids , 2 premium strikers and 1 mid price striker.
So that you can accordingly move from 4-3-3 to 3-4-3 to 3-5-2 if necessary according to the fixtures. Flexibility is the key IMO

Repost! I would appreciate your opinions on this, do not hesitate to comment!

My gameweek was a total disaster 🙁 slipped from 1st to 4th in my minileague.

This is my team at the moment:
    Vorm, Stekelenburg
    Coleman, Amorebieta, Mertesacker, Zabaleta, Shaw
    Ramsey, Michu, Eriksen, Oscar, Barkley
    Soldado, Sturridge, Giroud

1FT, 0.3 in the bank. I'm tempted to press the wildcard button after the failure of last week. Should I do it?

How's Kos working out for you? Happy with him and the ARS defence?

      Arnie could have been Alfie.

Other than that, there's nothing really worth a -4.

Just a word of advice for the Lukaku-wagoners.. Going through the Everton forums the mass opinion is that Lukaku is a gr8 player but tends to disappear after about 45-60 mins as he just gives too much. After watchin both games i tend to agree with them.. They reckon we'll see lukaku getting subbed early often with jelavic/kone coming on or even jelly/kone startin with lukaku comin on to destroy tired defenses. Considerin what WBA did with him that is a possibility. Will get goals and reckon above 20 so will get the points.. just dont expect 90 mins in every game. Ignore if required please as it is NOT what martinez has said. just everton fans on forums and a couple i know

Nice job Keith. This makes me wonder whether the early Rooney -> Lukaku transfer is worth it.

A little early to judge him after two full games imo with one game at Citeh.

It's more judgin him after a half season with WBA and why Mourinho set him out on loan also.. He tends to give the ball far too easily and breaks play down often. Gr8 for that burst of strength and speed for 45 or so mins but a liability otherwise.. Again, i reckon he'll score similar as he did at West Brom but he was an impact sub there many games for a reason.

So this is it then. Another 14 days of nothingness. I've got to sit and look at this lot for two whole weeks:

    Chesney, Davis
    Vidic, Zaba, Toure, Figueroa, Celustka
    Oscar, Eriksen, Michu, Ramsey, Januzaj
    Sturridge, Soldado, Lukaku

Good job I'm happy with my squad 😀

I'm happy enough to hold on for a few more weeks. If (IF) he finds some form, he'll be the next big thing.
