Moving Target

Moving Target – Bacary Sagna

Manchester City kick-started a summer of restructuring last month by confirming the acquisition of Bacary Sagna from Arsenal on a three-year deal. After failing to agree an improved contract with the Gunners, the 31-year-old will arrive at the Etihad as a free agent and follows in the footsteps of Gael Clichy and Samir Nasri in swapping north London for the blue half of Manchester:

The History

A product of the FC Sens and Auxerre youth academies, Sagna made his debut for the latter back in the 2004-05 campaign. Over the course of three seasons, the right-back made 104 appearances and provided four assists for the Ligue 1 club – voted Auxerre Player of the Year in 2006-07, his displays persuaded Arsene Wenger to fork out £7m for his services in July 2007.

The Frenchman lasted seven years at the Emirates and with little competition for a first-team place, made 284 Premier League appearances for the north London outfit. Sagna’s raids down the right served up five goals and 27 assists and saw him named in the PFA Player of the Year XI on two occasions – 2007-08 and 2010-11 – though his only piece of silverware arrived just last May, when Arsenal defeated Hull City to lift the FA Cup.

On the international stage, Sagna made his debut back in 2007 and has subsequently turned out for his country on 40 occasions, though his fallen down the pecking order in recent times and remains second choice right-back behind Newcastle’s Mathieu Debuchy.

The Prospects

With a first full season at the helm now behind him, Pellegrini is clearly intent on replenishing his options at the back. Already this summer, Costel Pantilimon has moved to Sunderland, Joleon Lescott has joined West Brom, whilst Micah Richards is also set to leave the club under freedom of contract after failing to convince the Chilean he was worthy of a place in the first-team squad.

Sagna’s arrival affords City a proven Premier League player, who is also capable of filling in at centre-half if the need arises. While that may be all good and well for Pellegrini, from a Fantasy perspective it looks to have killed the prospects of both Sagna and Pablo Zabaleta for the season ahead. With Richards either struggling with injury or out of form, the Argentine was named in the first XI in 34 of City’s league matches last term – Sagna was similarly nailed-on at Arsenal, also starting 34 times, and it looks like his acquisition will merely allow Pellegrini the chance to rotate the spot with far more regularity. Indeed, one look at the City left-back berth, where Clichy made 21 starts and Aleksandar Kolarov managed 18, is perhaps indicative as to what we can expect.

With Martin Demichelis approaching 34 years of age and Matija Nastasic plagued with a back problem, it looks likely that Vincent Kompany will be the one City defender we can rely upon unless Pellegrini strengthens further. At the Emirates, though, Wenger tends to rarely rotate his defence – a potential move for Debuchy would bring him immediately onto our radars, though the likes of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker remain strong routes into a backline that conceded just 11 times at home last term.

The recently-released Premier League fixture list has handed Pellegrini a tricky opening few fixtures. Showdowns with Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea in the first five Gameweeks suggest that many will steer clear of their defensive assets from the off but even when the schedule clears, Sagna and Zabaleta – with 133 points and 146 points in last term’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game respectively – both look set to be crossed off our Fantasy radars unless injuries allow one of the duo to nail down a regular role.

Chelsea had a double gameweek in week 1 last season, and possibly the season before that too.
Does anyone know if any teams are likely to play twice in week one this season?

    Alright, important question FFSers.

Blue Lion and I are considering creating a league for FFS in this: http://fantasy.epl.fanxt.com/commissioner/landing.php?rule=N1

Basically, the main difference between this and FPL is that the rules, transfers, scoring and even player prices are fully customisable for the creators of the league. Have a look at the link above.

So, are you interested? If you are, what part of the scoring would you change from FPL? More points for saves? More clean sheet points for goalies? A hat-trick bonus? Let us know, all opinions are appreciated.

is this a draft league or just a different FF league?

I'd say maybe 5pts for a gk cs and also more points for saves in order to make the gk position more important

and can you give BPs for pretty much anything? or how does that work?

It's pretty much a completely different game, just like FPL except more customisable. I'm not sure about the BPs, I haven't played this game before but BL asked me if I'd be interested in helping him create a FFS 'game'.

It sounds like it should be fun. It would work best if there were some significant differences from FPL to avoid the player choices being the same. Alternatively a draft league would be good, or a head to head in divisions to have promotion and relegation maybe.

arsenal does not need cheaper - they tried that route for ten years. they need better.
they rather pay double and get a player who is only 50% better - thats exactly what the big clubs do - if you want that extra quality to become a contender, you need to pay - you are NOT winning the PL with schneiderlin (who is indeed a very good player) but you at least have a chance with a front six of khedira/ramsey/ozil/wallcot/cazorla/sanchez

Its not my point actually. I would have welcomed Khedira had his injury records had been a bit better.
I can bet any amount of money on the fact that those front 6 you mentioned wont play even 25 matches 'together' in a season. We are already plagued by injuries at vital stages, and we can't really afford a player who on a daily basis is injured for 3-4 months every season!

I wont buy a Liv/City/Eve defender for now. For spurs, I would rotate them when they play against very attacking team like City/Liv, from nowhere, they concede 4-5 goals against them. But I guess, under Pochettino, they will come good, so add them to above list too. Dont have much trust in another team's defence except Stoke, CRP, WHM. So wouldnt take risk to go without backup for tough fixtures

For me, last year 4 way rotation + Coleman worked well until winter WC where a chelsea defender became a must. I still think to go with the same formula and I see that QPR, STO, SWA, CPL quartet rotate well enough in first 20 GW except GW11.

    So your opinions about:

    1) What will be your strategy for defense? 4 cheapie + 1 works for you?
    2) If you also think 4 cheapie which teams do you consider?

Sorry lads but scrap the idea I had above. Just started to create a league and...

It costs $9 PER MONTH to create a league... For up to 10 members!

If we wanted to have over 100 people in our league it'd cost $149 a month... So unfortunately it won't be able to go ahead. 🙁

      that's unfortunate :(.

if you wanna do something different we could just do a small (say 10 person) fantrax league for some regulars in the DZ. could create some good banter 😀

on a completely different note, love the name 😀

I'll be setting up a H2H league in FPL for the DZ called Graveyard Shift. I started it halfway through last year and there was some good banter and tight matches, so once I've got the league code I'll post it on here. Hopefully we can get heaps of DZers to join. 🙂

True, he had an amazing world cup, although it is worth noting that he was playing in a defensive side and in the heart of a 5 person defense, so he could afford to go challenge for those headers / tackles as he had another 2 CBs covering him at all times..

    Cheap ways into defences (estimations)

    Man Utd - Shaw/Rafael/Evans 5.5
Arsenal - Debuchy 5 (if at Newcastle)
    Liverpool - Flanagan 5.5
Spurs - Rose Chiriches Kaboul (Davies if signed) 5
Everton - Stones 5 (could oust Distin)
Stoke - Bardsley 4.5 (competition with Cameron)
    Palace - Mariappa 4.5
    Southampton - Clyne/Chambers 4.5

It's like at any point, of any day this week... It's going to be Christmas.

We don't know when, and the only way we'll find out is by hitting F5 that one last magical time before someone posts "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" or something of that nature 😀

This is what it means, to be addicted to fpl.

Chiriches could be 5.5 as Spurs are one of the premium teams, which means they'll probably pick up a few cleanies, plus Poch should help them to be a little bit more solid defensively, and he's young so will only get more and more starts every year.

Huth may be 5 but I'd be surprised, Stoke defenders are generally expensive.

do they pick prices on the predicted outcome of the incoming season or based on last season's performance? if the latter they shouldn't be more than that

They take both into account I think... A reflection on both how the player has done in the past, and what the perceived chances are of that player doing well in the year ahead.

Di Maria wants more money, after a year of success on the field. Same with Khedira.
Real wont be pushed, they are rich, but need to balance the wage structure. They are very good players, but no ronaldo and bale, in terms of skills and commercial value.
They are offered better contracts, but not the like the top guns, naturally.
We see much of the same in Bayern.

Name of the money game. The PSGs are there to take advantage.
