Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 29

With only a handful of sides involved in Premier League and FA Cup action since our last update, there’s been little movement among those players toeing the line on the Suspension Tightrope. It’s as you were at the summit, with Neil Taylor, Phil Bardsley, Cesc Fabregas, Ciaran Clark and Sebastian Larsson teetering just one booking away from a two-match suspension.

By virtue of Gabriel Agbonlahor’s caution in Aston Villa’s Fa Cup win over rivals West Brom, the Villains are now the most represented club in the eight-yellows-or-above bracket – a cause for concern for manager Tim Sherwood, who’s already contending with a raft of injuries and suspensions.

Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo picked up his fourth caution in seven starts against Newcastle, moving up to the eight-yellow mark. The Red Devils can ill afford to lose another member of their rearguard in the wake of Jonny Evans’ suspension, so the Argentine will have to stay out of trouble for four Gameweeks before the slate is wiped clean on 14 April.

In terms of newly-suspended players, Jack Grealish misses Villa’s Gameweek 29 encounter against Sunderland after he picked up two quick yellows as a late substitute against West Brom. Meanwhile, Baggies midfielder Claudio Yacob committed two bookable offences in the same match but was handed a two-game suspension due to it being his second red card of the season – the 27-year-old was sent off for a dangerous challenge on Diego Costa at Stamford Bridge.

Angel Di Maria earned a red card at a particularly inopportune moment, just before Manchester United embark on an unforgiving fun of fixtures (TOT, liv, AVL, MCI, che) that could define their fight for a Champions League berth. The Argentine winger will sit out United’s home tie against Tottenham on Saturday following the ignominy of being booked for simulation and aggressive behaviour towards referee Michael Oliver in the space of 20 seconds.

Jonny Evans began his six-match ban after being charged with spitting at Newcastle’s Papiss Cisse. United’s FA Cup exit against Arsenal on Monday means Evans will now be unavailable until the Gameweek 34 encounter with Everton. For his part in the incident, Cisse received a seven-match ban, with the additional penalty a product of receiving red for elbowing Everton’s Seamus Coleman in December. The Toon frontman will be back in contention for West Brom’s visit to St James’ Park in Gameweek 36.

Joey Barton serves the last of a three-match ban as QPR roll up to Palace this Saturday, whilst Alan Hutton sits out the second of a two-match suspension as Villa make their way to Sunderland.

Elsewhere, Gareth Barry and Lee Cattermole start the first of their two-match suspensions after topping off the Tightrope and Palace’s Mile Jedinak sits out the second of a four-match ban for violent conduct. Sunderland winger Adam Johnson remains suspended by the club pending the outcome of police investigations relating to off-field matters.

Amongst those returning players, Glenn Murray, Nemanja Matic, Jack Colback and Morgan Amalfitano are all back in contention for Gameweek 29, having served their time. Matic twisted his knee celebrating the Blues’ Capital One Cup triumph but recovered in time to face Paris Saint-German in the Champions League last 16 this evening.

    Bottomed....

What to do with this lot?

    Foster, Panti
    Terry, Bertrand, Monreal, Naughton, PvA
    Hazard, Sanchez, Eriksen, Mane, Moses
    Aguero, Kane, Austin

    1 FT, 3.5 ITB

    A) Monreal/PvA ----> Ivanovic
    B) Monreal/PvA ----> Alderweirald
    C) Eriksen/Mane ----> Silva
    D) Save FT

    Cheers.

Do you think PvA is more nailed then Monreal? (Who played in the cup against MUN)
I think I will keep Mane, less then 2% ownership and is the focal point to Southamptons attack. Clearly their biggest threat, he also has an easy fixture next week and benching him for Moses this week 😛

If you get an egg wrap it in sellotape put it inside a leg of a pair of tights. Spin it around your head for a minute then boil it the yolk will be on the outside and the white will be in the middle.

    Captains over differentials

Hi everyone, this might sound a bit simplistic to the non-casuals... But I reckon the main mistake I've been making since christmas (when I momentarily pushed into the top 5k) is I've been choosing differential players like DI Maria and coutinho, in order to find points that top ranked players won't get. I suspect there's enough variation in the top 10k to be able to move up the ranks, even with a 'template' team... And the way to do it is clever/lucky captain choice, rather than picking differentials.

Is that the way you play the game?

    1. Bolivian Seaman
      • 13 Years

Yes. Differentials sounds like a term for massive punts.

A differential is a captain choice and for me a defence with attacking returns. There is also the 4th midfield spot and 3rd striker spot that I consider a differential

I filled my '4th' mid spot with coutinho last week (differential), but should have just transfered hazard back in - the safer template choice. Of course one transfer doesn't make the rule... I think the broader point is the template exists for a reason - they're the players more likely to score on balance. Going for a riskier player will get you less points on average... So choose the template and be smart with the captain

Yep. sanchez, hazard and possibly silva are almost essential. Though I'm going to punt on siggy for silva soon. Yeah template wins bar a few

Not so calculated risks. I've been burned in kind. Captaining a differential rather than being content with them simply being a differential. Taking risks on potential when there are other obvious options I'm ignoring. I think the lesson is let FPL make the obvious decisions for you. The other no so obvious ones are where the ground is there to be gained or lost.

This a good gameweek for a differential captain. It all rests on Aguero not scoring. I have a feeling dzeko will be in the goals and not aguero, so I'm having a punt. 70% will go aguero

Agree and think aguero is not currently worth his price. My question for you is - who would you captain from the 'template', assuming dzeko isn't in it. Maybe Sanchez?

A GW in which 70% or more will captain Aguero against Burnley is not one to have a punt.

Yeah no telling how it will turn out. But there are only a few players I consider template...

Terry or Ivan - Saints D(which is debatable)
                Hazard - Silva(also debatable)
                Kun - Kane

So there's quite alot of leeway there.

The scoutcast showed that a lot of people are worried about not owning Giroud. So that could work. He doesn't normally score big though.

Yeah I'm going with sanchez. 5 shots against man united in the fa cup, played against one of the fastest fullbacks and this week he won't be playing against Jenkinson because of loan arrangements

Aguero Sanchez Hazard Silva dependent on home/away and opposition are minimal differences. Aguero might not be worth it but still sn obvious choice for captain. I think the premis of not losing ground rather than how to gain it is a better strategy over the long term. Differentials are a punt and in the long run people will lose. Go for the most backed captain.

Pick the players likely to score the most points. My teams are always pretty top 10k template mostly because the top 10k have a similar view of the players most likely to score pts. However in my 3 years playing and posting here I've never actually seen an identical starting 11 to mine. There is enough variance that it's always possible to climb. Same with captains, go for who you think will score most pts. This week I feel kun is over backed and alternatives like Sanchez are a worthy alternative.

... and at this stage it's about judicious transfers so you always have 11 players, which means keeping the squad strong, looking at injuries and suspensions, and anticipating fixtures. I think safe choices bring more rewards than differentials at the moment. That said, what am I doing with Bentaleb in my team??

      Sorry, but this is nonsense.

The top 10k are like a swarm of bees. They tend to all go in a similar direction once the direction is established. They call it "the template" and they cite "ownership" as justification.

The fact is that some of their "swarm" decisions are good and some are not. If you can avoid most of the bad ones and be early with most of the good ones you will do very well. That's the challenge of FPL and it requires you to have better judgement than others.

If you just want to follow the template I can't understand why you'd even want to play. You may as well hand your team over to the FFF bot and have it managed for you.

Surely such a policy dramatically increases the risk in plummeting down the rankings. The top ranked teams have stuck to the template 90% of the time

        1. Ruth_NZ
          • 9 Years
          9 years, 7 months ago

Yes it does. If you get it wrong more often than you get it right. It also increases your chance of rising fast if you get it right more often than not.

Backing your judgement to beat the template is the only interesting challenge in this game. Playing safe for a safe top 10k ranking is relatively easy to do.

I am not saying "don't do the template". I am saying "don't automatically do the template". The top 10k get a lot of "swarm" decisions wrong. If you think they have but do the same anyway you obviously don't have much belief in your own judgement.

I agree with most of this.

Whilst it's true that you shouldn't try and pick differentials and make off beat captain choices, as it will just harm your team and you will always have differences anyway, it's also true that the template is not as solid as it's often made out to be, anyone remember the week 1 template with 3 United players, or the week 5 template that was certain Fàbregas was way better than Hazard?

People seem to forget that the template gets almost unlimited transfers, and is also managed by Harry Hindsight, and Larry luck, sometimes at the expense of the more reasonable Jerry Judgement.

I've had 5 or 6 green arrows in a row and up to top 7k now. I have a pretty "template team".

Don't bother looking for differential captains, just whoever will score most that week even if it's the template choice.

I don't particularly care about rank so will let others make the call to try different things. I stick to my own plan.

As long as I win my minileagues that's all that matters.

That's a bit harsh. Of course wanna finish high as possible or why bother trying but some of us would rather try and achieve that by following our gut on who will top score rather than worrying bout what % of top 10k will do what and how risky it would be not to follow that.

If you were concerned mainly with your mini league you'd probably win with the template.

But challenging the top 10k and getting some punts in is more fun. You're less likely to succeed, but template teams will only help you climb a few places at a time, whereas if you happen to have some bizarre differential who scores a hattrick, you'll be shooting up the ranks.

If you believe your own analysis is better than that of the 10k population then you simply choose the combination of players who will score the most points.

The only time ownership should factor into decision making is in final games of the season where you buy highly owned players to get achieve the average score and maintain your rank (low risk) or buy players with low ownership to score above average and increase rank (high risk).

Captain choice can be very tricky and involves more luck than choosing the squad. Where you genuinely can't make up your mind you need to decide whether you want a low/high risk strategy and captain with/against the consensus.

      No.
I don't think that I would do much experiment with the captain armband. Though I do appreciate the upside of it paying off.

But just consider this, if my differential captain scores big only, can we actually say that the decision has paid-off ? NO.

It pays-off only when my differential captain scores and simultaneously the popular captain choice blanks. But probability of that happening is simply quite low.

It is very much possible that, in the week my differential captain scores big, but the popular captain also does the same (and will probably do, the reason why he is the popular choice that week) and in that case, all my bravery simply goes in vain. I know I sound like a dullard, but this is what I think honestly. 🙂

I'm not sure I agree with this.

If I ignore Aguero v Burnley when 70% will captain and he is the top scorer for the week I'm crippled, I could drop 20-50k places.

If I swap out Silva for Puncheon and he blanks while Silva scores it's probably not gonna be that bad.

I guess it depends if you want to risk it all to make a huge gain in one week or spread the risk to make steady gains over several weeks.

Reading that back I'm not sure any of that makes sense...

Forget about differentials. Ownership should only come into your thinking if you are trying to make up ground in a mini league in the last few gameweeks. Pick the players to maximise your points.

Set and forget your captain on the best player in the game. Trying to move the armband around has never worked for me.

A good way to rise in the rankings is to resist the temptation to take hits when others can't.

yes and no. i would never get a differential just to be different. but templates dont last and you should just be alert when someone is showing good stuff on pitch/nice fixtures. silva & santi, for example, were not template before christmas. you got some good points from them if you hopped on early. now santi seems to fade away, silva is maybe still a good pick. downing also was not template right away. those who jumped on early (and knew when to dump) got the benefit. fabregas also a good example, once essential, now not anymore. of course captain is an extra player every week so as important as any other player in your starting 11.

    B) Ayoze -> Berahino (benching Eriksen)

I still have my WC which I plan to use in GW34, so no need to start DGW planning just yet.

Struggling this season. I snuck inside the top 25k this week - which is a season high. Like you, I still have a WC up my sleeve though - so I'm aiming (hoping) for a late surge and a semi-respectable top 10k finish. We'll see!

Definitely still in with a shout of top 10k, especially with the WC in hand. I think it'll end up being worth 20-30 points over GW33-34.

Clichy -> Terry probably the right move above? Both Clichy and Zaba have been stinker transfers for me this season!

With ADM joining a whole host of forwards out for MUN (RVP & Young injured, Falcao out of favour...) does that make Mata a great differential for the next couple at least? He has almost always delivered when he's been given the opportunity.

I still can't believe he doesn't get a start so you'd think he'd have to get a run out with the injuries at United. Just a shame (in fpl only) that United i) looks pants and 2) have tough fixtures

Hard to believe that a player of his quality and consistency can't find a starting position. Maybe he does leave teams too exposed but, he creates so much and scores so many I feel that that is something that could be worked around!

Too risky imo, he's sadly still not assured of starts. He's similar to Walcott in the fact that he'd be a great option IF he was nailed on, but it doesn't look like he ever will be under LVG. Definitely too risky a punt for someone in your position 😉 Was cool having you on the scoutcast btw, top stuff.

it seems the only 2 teams who he would not get on the team sheet is man U and Chelsea. Look at his record over the last 4 seasons; he contributes most of the time and more importantly against the top sides. workrate is everything for Van G and Morinho. He suffers through their reputations.

Fatigue won't be an issue. They haven't played too many games recently. In fact that may have cost them, arguably they haven't been playing enough.

Disappointment is another matter. The team has not been playing well over the last weeks in any case. Fabregas isn't contributing much. Cuadrado hasn't offered much yet. Oscar is not in good form. Costa isn't getting enough support. There are serious weaknesses in Chelsea's squad as all Chelsea fans know, despite pundits trotting out the line about Chelsea having the best squad in the PL.

Having said all that I'd expect them to beat Southampton this weekend. Southampton aren't that good either.

Kane, Austin/ Giroud and Aguero looking ok for now.

Looking at your linked team i would be looking at Cazorla to Hazard.
