Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 29

With only a handful of sides involved in Premier League and FA Cup action since our last update, there’s been little movement among those players toeing the line on the Suspension Tightrope. It’s as you were at the summit, with Neil Taylor, Phil Bardsley, Cesc Fabregas, Ciaran Clark and Sebastian Larsson teetering just one booking away from a two-match suspension.

By virtue of Gabriel Agbonlahor’s caution in Aston Villa’s Fa Cup win over rivals West Brom, the Villains are now the most represented club in the eight-yellows-or-above bracket – a cause for concern for manager Tim Sherwood, who’s already contending with a raft of injuries and suspensions.

Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo picked up his fourth caution in seven starts against Newcastle, moving up to the eight-yellow mark. The Red Devils can ill afford to lose another member of their rearguard in the wake of Jonny Evans’ suspension, so the Argentine will have to stay out of trouble for four Gameweeks before the slate is wiped clean on 14 April.

In terms of newly-suspended players, Jack Grealish misses Villa’s Gameweek 29 encounter against Sunderland after he picked up two quick yellows as a late substitute against West Brom. Meanwhile, Baggies midfielder Claudio Yacob committed two bookable offences in the same match but was handed a two-game suspension due to it being his second red card of the season – the 27-year-old was sent off for a dangerous challenge on Diego Costa at Stamford Bridge.

Angel Di Maria earned a red card at a particularly inopportune moment, just before Manchester United embark on an unforgiving fun of fixtures (TOT, liv, AVL, MCI, che) that could define their fight for a Champions League berth. The Argentine winger will sit out United’s home tie against Tottenham on Saturday following the ignominy of being booked for simulation and aggressive behaviour towards referee Michael Oliver in the space of 20 seconds.

Jonny Evans began his six-match ban after being charged with spitting at Newcastle’s Papiss Cisse. United’s FA Cup exit against Arsenal on Monday means Evans will now be unavailable until the Gameweek 34 encounter with Everton. For his part in the incident, Cisse received a seven-match ban, with the additional penalty a product of receiving red for elbowing Everton’s Seamus Coleman in December. The Toon frontman will be back in contention for West Brom’s visit to St James’ Park in Gameweek 36.

Joey Barton serves the last of a three-match ban as QPR roll up to Palace this Saturday, whilst Alan Hutton sits out the second of a two-match suspension as Villa make their way to Sunderland.

Elsewhere, Gareth Barry and Lee Cattermole start the first of their two-match suspensions after topping off the Tightrope and Palace’s Mile Jedinak sits out the second of a four-match ban for violent conduct. Sunderland winger Adam Johnson remains suspended by the club pending the outcome of police investigations relating to off-field matters.

Amongst those returning players, Glenn Murray, Nemanja Matic, Jack Colback and Morgan Amalfitano are all back in contention for Gameweek 29, having served their time. Matic twisted his knee celebrating the Blues’ Capital One Cup triumph but recovered in time to face Paris Saint-German in the Champions League last 16 this evening.

    IF all goes to plan, and no injuries, with no hit i will be having the following for week 34
    (9 dgwkrs + silva+ aguero vs villa at home)

    pantillimon

    sakho, terry , bellerin (pva, alderweilder)

    hazard, fabregas, sanchez, silva, mahrez

    kun, giroud (kane)

    some thoughts please ?

      It's a good plan, especially considering there's no hits involved.

      I would rather Haz-Ivan-Terry trio than Fabregas. He doesn't have form and is typically less productive in the second half of the season. Just saw this on twitter yesterday:

      I don't expect to win this season, but give me three years and the team will be playing the way I want.

      It will also take me £150m to spend in players in the summer as the tebuilding phase continues.

    Want to get Silva in... 1ft and 3,4 itb. Any thoughts around this, or the rest of my team?

    foster/myhill
    Fonte, clyne, terry, haidara, cdawson
    sanchez, hazard, boyd, eriksen, ajohnson
    Kun, kane, austin

    A Johnson and Boyd to Silva and Cork/Bentaleb??

      A. Johnson obviously needs to go and you need to take a hit to get Silva. Your proposed move could be a good one (prefer Cork to Bentaleb) or downgrading one of your Soton defenders.

      Well.. you could read that as Terry has got just 3 baps less with 4 assists and a goal less hence making him more of a bap threat.. also with just 10 fixtures left banking on attacking points from defenders is not as great an idea as 28 weeks ago for eg. Ivan's goal threat reads as 1 in 7 games atm and same for assists.. i got terry @6.3 or so and i dont see ivan bein worth the swap

      1. Pompel
        • 10 Years
        9 years, 7 months ago

        But if Ivan's attacking form of late is due to a change to a more advanced position on the wing for him, it may be worth it. Currently own Terry myself, very undecided on whether to go with Ivan or not.

      2. money face bandwagon
        • 11 Years

        sorry i disagree. 2 of his goals and 3 of his assists are since jan..and watching chelsea's matches he is a threat down the flank and is an on form player..so its not surprising that his attacking points arrive.

        if u ignore recent form then there is no point getting the likes of coutinho. coutinho has only 4 goals 5 assists..same as ivan and no CS potential.

        i agree that if u get terry at 6.3 its hard to swap though

      3. Taffer

        Do you think Azpi > Ivan is a good transfer if you don't have more pressing issues. My other 6.0 defender is Kosc but I am unwilling to get rid of him as a) is a decent differential in my ML and b) he is a goal threat (about the same as Terry imo).

        My rival has no Chelsea def and can't really afford one without getting rid of Bertrand

    7. money face bandwagon
      • 11 Years
      9 years, 7 months ago

      haha just by watching some of chelsea's matches we all know how threatening is ivan..so his goals n assists does not come as a surprise.

      its no brainer imo if u are choosing between both of them. Both are very expensive..i will either ivan or nothing.

    My side:
    Panti (Heaton)
    Terry Lescott Bellerin ( PVA Bertrand )
    Silva Haz Sanchez Erik (Walters)
    Austin Kane Aguero
    .9 ITB

    If the DGW's pan out Liverpool, Arsenal Sunderland playing:

    Changes:
    GW30 none GW31 none GW32 Walters/Mahrez GW33 PVA/Schlupp GW34 Erik/Henderson Lescott/Ivan.

    I think not too much to tidy up GW35 onwards playing 11 GW33 and 10DGWS GW 34.

    After reassessing my transfer I wish I'd bought Bellerin in to double up on Arsenal rather that bringing McAuley in this week but hoping McAuley can be a nice differential! Pretty sure he offered some sort of goal threat last season?

    4.7 ITB

        the 120 mins worries me but at least the game is on Sunday. Also one that Mou will be desperate to win. No other comps left for them so should be good to chuck in now and leave.

        I just don't feel comfortable having both Austin and Punch as starters every week...

          I do normally cheer on other English teams in the CL.

          But lately, Chelsea are really turning into an ugly team to watch.

          To happy to sit back once they're in front. It was awful watching the Chelsea players react like that over Zlatan.

          I admit, I cheered when PSG scored.

    Only 95% happy with the team, so trying to find a move to gain a little advantage. Still got the WC, so not forced to plan everything for DGW34. Current team is

    Panti - Hamer
    Terry - Clyne - Dawson - PvA - Baird
    Hazard - Eriksen - Øzil - Silva - Boyd
    Aguero - Kane - Austin

    1 FT, £4.5 itb

    Would you do any of the following to boost the team:

    1) Austin -> Gioud
    2) Terry -> Ivan
    3) Øzil -> Sanchez
    4) PvA -> Bellerin
