Six Premier League matches, not a single clean sheet. Can someone at the FPL approve a 1-7-3 formation?

We went into Saturday’s matches with United facing West Brom at fortress Old Trafford, Arsenal up against a Birmingham side low on confidence and without Cameron Jerome, Newcastle hosting a goal-shy Wigan. It didn’t look too much to ask to expect at least one clean sheet from that lot.

Instead investors in Patrice Evra, Nemanja Vidic, Tim Krul, and the one-week budget offer that is Johan Djourou, were left empty handed. Arsenal’s fragility was again exposed, this time by the towering Nikola Zigic, Van der Sar uncharacteristially blundered two points against Di Matteo’s refreshingly cavalier Baggies, and Newcastle were undone by a proper Charile N’Zogbia performance.

As this is typed the league’s best defence is largely unoccupied, while Chelsea’s midfield dominate the second period at Villa Park. Perhaps Carlo Ancelotti’s side will once again be the Fantasy Manager’s saving grace?

Then we have Man City to come on Sunday as they hop on the bus to Blackpool. They can expect waves of attack at the seaside; the word “cagey” doesn’t exist in the Blackpool vocabularly and I can’t see Holloway involving himself in a game of chess with the cultured Roberto Mancini. City won’t have it easy then, but maybe they can join Chelsea as the two continue to run away with the clean sheet count.

Aside from that pair of defensive dependables, Fantasy Managers are left scratching for returns at the back. The trend towards mid-price or cheap defensive options who can offer the threat of attacking points – Seamus Coleman of Everton, Elmohamady of Sunderland, Chris Samba of Blackburn and perhaps Gary Cahill of Bolton, is surely set to continue.

Can anyone really back the Arsenal defence until Thomas Vermaelen returns from injury? Do we expect Untied to travel to Stoke or indeed, to host Spurs the Gameweek after, and keep them at bay? Not even the mid-price defences, who have provided a modicum of efficiency in previous seasons – Aston Villa, Stoke, Birmingham, Fulham – seem to provide any real potential that can be relied on.

Find me a defender out of position or at least one who can offer a real threat from set-plays. After today’s heavy load of dirty laundry, I’m beginning to give up on the hunt for clean sheets.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Why is someone like Elmo about to rise tonight after not yet playing but Nzog nowhere on the list after scoring two?

Decent result.. BPs should go to three centre backs..

    Collins 3

Would be my guess. Reo-Coker had a chance of BPs but I reckon the judges won't be able to get over that miss!

In terms of spectacle, it was a dire match.

But we lost this fixture last season so improvement on that front.

Anelka offered nothing today bar the header at the end.

Glad to see "The Bos" back.

Anelka is such a joke. Incredible that he still gets to play for a side like Chelsea, and that he actually starts games. Pretty much any fit 5.5m forward would have scored at least once for Chelsea in a match like this.

I am obviously not talking about him playing for Arsenal during the 98-99 season, but him playing right now. He so often makes so little out of so much. And is just discouragingly boring to watch at times. He would have scored 3 goals for a team like Wigan this season.

Jamsiep, do you think Bosingwa will be nailed on eventually? He played all the time in 08/09, and then first 8 games under Ancelotti he was nailed on in 09/10.

I think it's worth the risk going for him, he's very attacking, looked ok during his short spell today, only 5.6 so not the end of the world if he misses the occasional game.

I'm not convinced. Even before Ivanovic had the chance to excel last season, Carlo didn't fancy Bosingwa in the harder matches... Ivanovic started against Utd and Liverpool with Bosingwa fit....

After today I'm also not too sure about who'll be first choice CBs... Ivanovic was excellent today, and is too good to be left on the bench regularly....

Be afraid Alex owners, the Chelsea back four will be
        Bos, Ivan, Terry, Cole.

Okay, I know Ivan could rotate with either Bos at rb or Alex at cb, but recent comments by Ancelotti hint at Bos being as nailed on as Cole if he hits form and his cameo tonight suggest he will.

I watched it all, and would have probably given the three to Wilshere prior to the red card.. But I reckon the red will change the opinion of the judges..

      Nasri 3
      Wilshere 2
      Chamakh 1

For the record, Chamakh wasn't particularly good, but a goal and an assist is usually enough for BPs.
