Six Premier League matches, not a single clean sheet. Can someone at the FPL approve a 1-7-3 formation?

We went into Saturday’s matches with United facing West Brom at fortress Old Trafford, Arsenal up against a Birmingham side low on confidence and without Cameron Jerome, Newcastle hosting a goal-shy Wigan. It didn’t look too much to ask to expect at least one clean sheet from that lot.

Instead investors in Patrice Evra, Nemanja Vidic, Tim Krul, and the one-week budget offer that is Johan Djourou, were left empty handed. Arsenal’s fragility was again exposed, this time by the towering Nikola Zigic, Van der Sar uncharacteristially blundered two points against Di Matteo’s refreshingly cavalier Baggies, and Newcastle were undone by a proper Charile N’Zogbia performance.

As this is typed the league’s best defence is largely unoccupied, while Chelsea’s midfield dominate the second period at Villa Park. Perhaps Carlo Ancelotti’s side will once again be the Fantasy Manager’s saving grace?

Then we have Man City to come on Sunday as they hop on the bus to Blackpool. They can expect waves of attack at the seaside; the word “cagey” doesn’t exist in the Blackpool vocabularly and I can’t see Holloway involving himself in a game of chess with the cultured Roberto Mancini. City won’t have it easy then, but maybe they can join Chelsea as the two continue to run away with the clean sheet count.

Aside from that pair of defensive dependables, Fantasy Managers are left scratching for returns at the back. The trend towards mid-price or cheap defensive options who can offer the threat of attacking points – Seamus Coleman of Everton, Elmohamady of Sunderland, Chris Samba of Blackburn and perhaps Gary Cahill of Bolton, is surely set to continue.

Can anyone really back the Arsenal defence until Thomas Vermaelen returns from injury? Do we expect Untied to travel to Stoke or indeed, to host Spurs the Gameweek after, and keep them at bay? Not even the mid-price defences, who have provided a modicum of efficiency in previous seasons – Aston Villa, Stoke, Birmingham, Fulham – seem to provide any real potential that can be relied on.

Find me a defender out of position or at least one who can offer a real threat from set-plays. After today’s heavy load of dirty laundry, I’m beginning to give up on the hunt for clean sheets.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

thanks for the reply. it's becoming really hard for me to sell him in every passing week. Problem is that I have to manage the cash for fab in the comin weeks and the only way is selling cole or Malouda but I don't wanna drop malouda either(although it may change in the nest two weeks as I will be very critical of his performances and look for excuses to sell him) Wud that be a good idea, dropping malouda?

I'm not going to tell you it's a good idea but I will say that I much prefer the balance offered by Cashley and Drogs compared to Malouda and Drogs. There are some great players on this site who will not be dropping Malouda unless he's injured. And some great ones who've done it already.

I think Cole offers such an attacking threat he's almost OOP. He could seriously have had 5 assists and 2 goals already this season. And he's hoovering up BP.

The list of players that need to go increases.

Bale must now surely be first on the chopping block (set to fall tonight and I expect several more times this week). I don't normally make my moves till Friday, but I may make an exception on this one.

Shawcross surely needs to follow swiftly. Pretty much one point a game except for last week. Bye Bye time fast approaching...!

Carroll's number is close to being up too. What a false dawn he was.

Foley may as well stay, as he's only £4k and he may as well just rot on the bench for the season picking pieces of pine out of his ass.

Everyone has VdV so no point getting him now. Thinking Charlie is my darling now, and getting either N'Zog or Brunt. Brunt is on pens though so that may sway it. Plus the Albion have some good fixtures coming up.

I need Kolarov to be available again so I can turn Shawx into him.

I really don't want to drop Bale... he's been playing well and I'd really, really like to keep him... it just seems like he could score two any weekend and I'd be sickened if that was the weekend I got him out.

Shawcross hasn't been getting much less than most defenders tbh, especially those in a similar price bracket. You can sell him for 4.8 now, unless he's going for someone like El Mummy, he's not gonna save you much money is he, and given that cleanies seem to be thin on the ground, the liklihood that you get someone at his price who delivers regularly is kind of slim. I have Shawcross too, and have been thinking of shipping him, but above is my reasoning not to.

15% of teams have VDV, that's not too much, is it? I may get him in tonight before the next price rise.

I didn't watch the Newcastle game today, was Carroll poor? Newcastle's fixtures are excellent for the next while, I'm sure he'll be amongst the goals, unless he looked truly woeful today or something. I also have Carroll, and don't see a whole load of value strikers to replace him. Did you buy him at his base price?

I was planning on doing this week s. davies out and barton in this week
and bale out and fabregas in next week. these transfers leave me with .2 in the bank. but if fabregas does well and bale goes down as he is supposed to be,should I take a hit this week and do the two transfers?

So Etuhu is out for a couple of weeks and Harper still hasn't been dealt with. I feel that the Etuhu situation is the priority transfer I should make over Harper as Foster has Blackpool at home, but I fancy getting in Elmohamady as well as Shawcross (bar last GW) and Stoke are, in a nutshell - toilet. And they're playing Utd next.

So, Etuhu > Adam and Shawcross > Elmohamady sound good?

      Works for me.

Hang the 4 point hit. Better to now take a hit and get a defender in who wont go 1, 1, 1, 1, 0, 1 every week.

        Thanks for your input boss.

Lookiing at the cash situation, I could even do Shawcross > K Toure and then the Etuhu transfer - the City coverage is gonna be needed at some point and although I like yourself would like Kolarov available, Toure is the mainstay in that defence for the time being.

So I'd have a defence of:

        Alex/Toure/Samba/Konch/Williamson

        And a midfield of:

        Nani/Malouda/VDV/Etherington/Adam

but then there is the Fab GW10 situation....

Hi guys. My transfer for this week looks like being arshavin to VDV. my chasing rivals have VDV so it's as much to cover them as it is a wish to have him in my team. Question: do it now to avoid the price rise or not?

I'd probably do it now as you don't have any mids left to play. Problem is an injury midweek in CL will force you into a hit. Nice rank btw.

On reflection, with possibly 4 players on CL duty this week, plus VDV on duty, it's damned risky for the sake of £0.1m. Think I'll wait. Late transfers have been my policy this year and it's paid off. Made two early ones last gw and sweated all fortnight on them. Alex was one....!

    Should I do:
this week - S Davies out Barton In
next week- Bale out Fabregas In (leaves me with 0.2 in the bank, but I cant do it if bales value drops and fabregas goes up)

    or
4 point hit for the two transfers this week

He played two internationals for Ireland (on friday last and tuesday) so it was always likely he'd be rested, given that Ferguson wants to give Rafael some playing time.

He'll be rotated occasionally, but should be in against stoke next weekend, especially given his height.

Just want Tevez to score more than Berbs tomorrow to vindicate sticking with Carlos. Been treading water the last three weeks now and thinking of getting a bit of cash in the bank to kick out the following:

    Williamson
    Shawcross
    Bale
Malouda (possibly - after Wolves game)

Looking at Bale > n'Zogbia & Williamson > Bosingwa for next week. What do you reckon?

£0.4m in the bank to do Gerrard > Fabs in gw10; but may do a 4 pointer to bin Malouda for Arteta or VDV as well.

seems to me that, strangely, blakpool and wba seem 2 be playing better away tham at home. brunt and adam have actually been really consistent.

whemever blakpool or wba play i can see them scoring goals as well as leaking quite a few at the back.

am i mad in putting krul in net nxt gw instead of foster? i can easily see blakpool put 2 past brum and newcastle also seem beter away from home, eg cleanie at everton
