“The times they are a-changin’.”

Bob Dylan, October 1963

This song was written almost half a century ago but Dylan clearly had what’s to come right on the precipice of his mind. That’s right, Johan Elmander is leading the captain’s poll. If ever there was a sign that times were and are changing in this Fantasy season, this would certainly be it. We’re not in Kansas anymore…

“Come writers and critics who prophesize with your pen, and keep your eyes wide the chance won’t come again.”

It’s taken him a fair bit longer than expected to settle into life in the Premier league, but alongside Chung-Yong Lee, Elmander is somewhat perversely proving Gary Megson makes a great scout if an ill-bodied manager. This season, under the stewardship of Owen Coyle, he has begun to flourish, much to the surprise of the many who had previously written the Swede off as a Premier League flop. With 8 goals, 5 assists and 13 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points Elmander is the current value pick for the season and your lead candidate for the armband.

Evidently, following the lack of assurances the “obvious” picks have been able to provide in recent weeks – the next step in line is to play a bit more fast and loose and bank on a form player against a defence which is known for conceding the odd goal or two.

“The line it is drawn, the curse it is cast, the slow one now, will later be fast”

It’s not like this is some kind of runaway victory for Elmander though, evidence so far points to an incredibly close race with Nani a mere handful of votes in the wake of the Bolton striker, and with good cause considering his home form and the visit of Blackburn for him and his United cohorts this week. The news of Newcastle’s second string centre-back pairing sees Didier Drogba well in the reckoning for another crack at the whip as well.

Rafael Van Der Vaart, Carlos Tevez and even Wayne Rooney following his penalty at Rangers, are also well and truly in the reckoning.

If you’ve not let us know of your decision, or you’ve not yet made one, why not stew on it briefly and then head back to the frontpage and rock the vote. Make sure it counts.

“And the first one now will later be last, for the times they are a-changin’.”

After not sleeping at all last night I once again tried to get some sleep during lunch at the cricket. Didn't nod off once and then heard my alarm, and thought I'll give it 2 more mins and next thing I know I've slept through 30 mins and missed 2 bloody wickets!

Oh well, amazing what 2 wickets can do. Suddenly a lot more confident.

Must admit the tevez move is appealing but wary of 4pt hit. I am in a monthly cash league and top at the moment. very worried about the Newc/Che game (weather). Most rivals have scar neck and without his tally i would have been well clear!

Typing 15 names & having a link can't be that hard.
People asking "can you have a look at my link & suggest changes" equals many people skipping the post due to having to make more of an effort than the person asking the question. It's worse when the person rarely helps others.

I have seen your Nasri comments bit for some reason feel swayed by cahill. In all fairness there is a distinct lack of choice. Have even considered getting Bale back (got rid the week he went nuts!) but VDV should be sufficient if fit. As mentioned above I am currently swaying towards the Tevez move and a 4pt hit but reluctant on a Wolves player, i.e Jarvis. Worst week for decision making for a while....

It is an extremely tough week to make decisions.

The potential snowed off game at Newcastle is what's worrying me the most. I'd lose 3 players if that happened, and I don't have the depth of subs that some others on here have to cope. The worst part is, I wouldn't want to get rid of them because I know that they'll have a double gameweek somewhere along the road and I'll want them back for it!

Trouble is that double gameweek could be months away. I harbour the same concerns for the weather this weekend. From all accounts it is pretty grim in the north at present and likely to continue. I swear Newcastlae have had games called off before very late, against Southampton once if I recall and maybe even the last season they were in the prem. My bench is useless of it is called off!!

i'd have 8.3m left for a defender if i transfer in cahill

          was thinking :

i'd agree with this, but not based on johnson's ability, itself. he plays in the attacking half at least 50% of the game (perhaps a bit of exaggeration, but you get my point), and is known to fairly regularly contribute with assists and the odd goal.

the reason his value is less than 7.1 is because liverpool haven't been the defensive powerhouse they were a couple of seasons ago. that said, skrtel and carra are doing *ok* as a central defensive pairing...if clean sheets start coming, i would argue johnson is worth every penny of that 7.1

      1. Drogba. If snowed out, probably Nani. But really don't want it to be snowed out.

      2. Take a hit and get rid of A. Cole for Kolarov (maybe).

      3. Your choice. The good thing about Nasri though, is that it allows me to downgrade to Bale if I want. N'Zog is a decent choice, and you have MGP as alt, but I just feel your midfield is lacking with Adam and N'Zog.

I sort of feel the same but I may upgrade Adam soon.. But I think what it comes down to is do I want to keep cashley long term ? His fixture run is tough now but has another dream run gw20. I still think it's with keeping cashley in the long run espmsince I got him at 7.5..

It will hurt to part with Carroll too , had him since gw 1

I know it's hard to part with Carroll and Cole.

I'll lose a lot as well.

But Cole has tough fixtures until January, and Chelsea look really vulnerable at the moment. By then, we'll have a WC to use. I think we'll be able to gain a lot without him, and to be honest, I think I'd prefer Kolarov as the defensive stalwart from here on out. City are just as good defensively, and Kolarov has an offensive ability to match Cole's. He's also cheaper, and that would give me much greater flexibility with my front 8 which is where I think the money should really be going. Cole had a great run, but he is still a defender, and as long as Chelsea aren't keeping clean sheets, he won't score well.

It all depends on how many games to be cancelled and how many players from those games you have, If you think you're going to score max 20p! you should take hits to justified your target.

I think it depends on your bench and like me if u have no bench strength it makes sense taking then hits especially if you want the players long term..

I have already pencilled in the following if we get snow news before the game

      Acole to kolarov
      Fabs to nasri
      Morrison to nzogbia

I would be benching Carroll and drogba .. Could also get Rooney or Torres in for Carroll if I get nzogbia instead of nasri..

I just hope we get some news before deadline

I'm thinking you need a better squad for the double fixture risks.

It's something I was very much against for a long time because I thought it took up a lot of funds.

I think the priorities here have to be on replacing players who aren't guaranteed starters. There's nothing worse than having a badly blitzed gameweek and having to rely on the likes of Jara and Foley because your other subs aren't playing. Squad diversity is also extremely important.

I highly doubt I'll be able to keep up my high ranking over this Christmas schedule. My team has too many holes, and the bad weather will ruin me.

            Yes I would.

Those 3 are my primary recommendations.

But I don't really need to take a risk with Kuyt since I'm doing fairly well and I can afford to creep up the ranks through my high team value.

I need help on my defence - subs, and whether to take a 4pt hit to upgrade:
    Foster (Krul)
Konchesky, Kolarov, Knight (Jose Enrique, Dann)

Don't you think Konchesky is a good long term pick? Liverpool:
        - aren't too bad at the back
        - he's starting to pick up other points (e.g. an assist last week)
        - liverpool have good fixtures coming up

I was thinking of dropping one of the newcastle & brum defenders. With 8m spare I can afford too. Which united defender would you recommend?

Possibly, although I'm pretty happy with my front line:
            Nani, VDV, Arteta, Jarvis, Adam
            Drogba, Elmander, Carroll.

At some point Jarvis will be upgraded, and I might get Fab back for Arteta, but with Elmander & Carroll on such fine form it leaves funds free for elsewhere!

Like alot of people, the Fab injury has affected my plans. The question for me is, should I take a 4 point hit or just hold on one more week and let auto sub do it's work? My team for this week is:

    Foster
    A Cole / Baines / Vidic / Coleman / Gohouri
    Jarvis / Fabregas* / Nani
    Tevez (c) / K Davies

Carson / Etherington (vs MCY H) / Carroll (vs CHE H) / Brunt (vs EVE A)

I'd recommend playing Etherington & Carroll in your starting team. You must have already done a trade before Fab got injured - bad luck, but shows the risks of trading before midweek!

I'd aim for a 3-4-3, with Fab your non-playing midfielder.

To all of you readers in England, what are the chances that you will be getting snow wherever you live and, if you're near an EPL ground, is there a chance that your game may be cancelled due to snow?

I'm looking at getting Cahill for Fabs and I see that it will snow on Friday night and through Saturday, just hoping the game won't be cancelled and I'll be wasting a trade.

Good points, but I think a hit is worth it.

Not only will you get Kolarov in early, you save yourself from playing Foley and save a future transfer so that you can make other changes to your team.

His team needs fixing and FAST, and that's not possible without taking a hit, and this is a decent time to do it.
