With the chances of us using the “Snow Joke” pun increasing every 24 hours, we’re entering a nervous few weeks in Fantasy terms. For now, our fixture list remains intact – safe from the ravages of our climate and the jobsworth application of the “Stadium Health and Safety Guidelines”. That thankfully gives me the full complement from which to plunder my Scout Pick selection, give or take a fragile Fabregas and a doubtful Dutchman…

The Defence

Mark Schwarzer
The goalkeeper’s spot gave handed me the biggest headache this week as, once again, clean sheets looked hard to come by. In the end, with defenders offering attacking potential elsewhere, I’ve opted to back Fulham’s defence against a Birmingham side that have shown erratic form away from home. Schwarzer, the must-have goalkeeping option last season, has slipped from the radar with a price increase and an inconsistent Fulham defence but he should return a Save Point or two this weekend at the very least.

Rafael
One of our “Spot the Differential” picks this week, the Brazilian has found some consistency to mix with his undoubted talent and has seemingly convinced Alex Ferguson that he warrants regular selection at left-back. Blackburn will test the questionable United rearguard but Rafael offers a cheap route to a possible clean sheet here, with a degree of attacking threat thrown in for good measure.

Leighton Baines
With Chelsea’s defence looking fragile and Rafael offering a cut-price option within the United back four, this week’s heavyweight defensive slot goes to Everton’s left-back. Baines notched his fourth and fifth assists of the season at Sunderland last time out and his link up with the raiding runs of Tim Cahill is a continuous feature of Everton’s attacking play. A home tie with struggling West Brom presents Baines with every chance of returns at both ends.

Gary Cahill
Bolton have kept just one clean sheet all season – at home to Fulham on day one. A shutout is long overdue and while Blackpool will carry plenty of attacking intent, Ian Holloway’s side have scored just 4 goals in their last 5 away trips. More to the point, Cahill has threatened attacking points in recent weeks with several breaks from the back ending in curling long-range efforts. Cahill will break his duck for the season soon and this week, against a porous Blackpool defence without their first choice keeper, looks as good as any.

Aleksandar Kolarov

City’s Serbian left-back will face a stern test at the Britannia and to be honest, a clean sheet against an in-form Stoke looks unlikely. Having said that, Roberto Mancini’s side have a strong defensive record and are second only to Arsenal in terms of away form. Attacking points could be the key for Kolarov and, as stated in our recent Watchlist article, he demonstrated enough in his start at Fulham last weekend to highlight his potential in that area.

The Midfield

Nani
If you’re looking to back United’s attacking potential these days then Nani is the obvious route, even with Wayne Rooney in line for a start this weekend. Still holding on to the top scorer spot in the Fantasy Premier League game, a home fixture with Blackburn should give the Portuguese every opportunity to add to his impressive tally.

Tim Cahill
Five goals in his last eight Premier League games tells you that the Aussie midfielder is on fire. While David Moyes searches for a goalscoring solution from his strikers, Cahill has obliged to keep the Toffee’s season ticking over. The West Brom defence is amongst the most obliging in the league right now and the scene is set for Cahill to boost his goal count further.

Samir Nasri
While Fantasy Managers search further afield for the Cesc Fabregas replacement, maybe the ideal candidate is right under our noses. Nasri has shown outstanding form this term, with or without his skipper alongside him. The Gunners will miss the craft and guile of the Spaniard at Villa Park this weekend but I’m still backing a victory with goals. Nasri will play his part and if Wenger keeps Robin Van Persie in reserve, he’ll be on free-kicks and penalties.

Matt Jarvis
I’m keeping the faith with the Wolves flyer. Jarvis was once again Mick McCarthy’s most potent threat at Blackpool last weekend, firing in more crosses than any other player in the league over the weekend. Jarvis will come up against a Sunderland side who have had the heart of their defence ripped from them by injuries to Titus Bramble and Michael Turner. The conclusion? Sunderland will concede at Molineux and if that proves to be the case, then Jarvis is highly likely to play some part. Also look to David Jones and Nenad Milijas if you fancy a budget gamble.

The Forwards

Johan Elmander
While my selection of Kevin Davies in last week’s Picks paid off thanks to a couple of spot-kicks and yet more Bonus Points, I’m not too comfortable in overlooking the overwhelming lure of Elmander for a second week running. The big Swede is the definition of a β€œhandful” right now and the Blackpool defence is facing a stern test from the Reebok’s striking duo. For my money, the heavy Fantasy investment in Elmander and Davies looks set to pay off.

Didier Drogba
The Ivorian is on one of his worst goalscoring runs having gone 5 starts without a strike. Chelsea’s form hasn’t helped matters and while Carlo Ancelotti’s side take the trip to Newcastle still lacking confidence, Drogba will come up against a home defence that will be fielding an untested centre-back pairing of Sol Campbell and Steven Taylor. Chris Hughton’s side come into the game having conceded five at Bolton, while Chelsea perhaps would have notched a similar total had it not been for the feats of Ben Foster in the Birmingham goal. Drogba has the opportunity to return to form and remind Fantasy Managers just why he looked so essential early on in the season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Hi all,

Needed a bit of advice regarding the Fabregas replacement. Thinking a straight swap for Nasri would be the best bet... But have also been toying with the idea of Kuyt. Had a solid game last week, getting on the scoresheet. With Liverpool's run of fixtures... could be a go? Or am I cluthcing at straws?

    Current Team:
    Hart (Jaaskelinen)
A.Cole Toure Konchesky Coleman El Mohamady
    Fabregas Nani Bale Adam Ferguson
    Tevez K.Davies A.Carroll

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Well Fabs is out for 2-3 weeks and since it's his other hamstring that's gone he will be twice as nervous as before, and Wenger will be very very careful with him to the point of wrapping him in cotton wool for a few weeks after that.

So transfer him because his price will drop anyway by the time that you want to get him back (if he ever recovers).

So before this gets too long winded, then b). πŸ™‚

B everyday. Fabregas has to go. Anyone holding on will really suffer over the Christmas period because there are so many gameweeks in a short period of time. He could miss 5 gameweeks, and that's unacceptable especially at his price.

I think VdV will play as well, and it's no harm in leaving him in the starting lineup, because if he's unfit, you've got backup with Jarvis.

              Benching Fabs serves no purpose.

It slows down his transfer process and wastes money on the bench. Fabs is going to sit out next week for sure as well, and we'll be having the same discussion next week.

It will save him 4 points, so there is some purpose.

    Re: DeathAngel

I didn't play the last two seasons even on an alt.

In fact, it's only really this season that I've really got into it. I quit in both the seasons I played prior to this one after like 10 gameweeks. It started with the World Cup FF. I did terribly in that, but got really addicted to the game formula again and I just sort of got sucked into playing FPL by this site.

I spent like 2 months poring over my team, working out who to pick, how I might like my team setup. Those 2 months really got me in the zone, and I thank my pre-season prep for my good start so far.

My football knowledge of the EPL is also much, much greater now than it was 3 years ago. And with all the resources of this site, I guess I've developed a new strategy that seems to be working so far. Maybe your experience will tell in the end, but I'm still determined to do everything I can to get as high a score and rank as possible.

If I didn't have money on one of my mini leagues I'd have probably given up already or at least not spend so long debating and deliberating on transfers and hits.

If I wasn't playing for money Rooney would be in my team for Caroll for a 4 point hit by now.

I don't have that much experience as I only started last season. However, I had 800 points after GW18 last season, and that was with higher weekly scores for everyone on average last year due to the big guns being more reliable etc last season.

I think I was about 1,200,000th after the first 18 gameweeks, but I gradually turned it round to finish inside the top 200k by the end of the season. I think I only lost about 100 points to the leaders of FPL over the second half of the season so I was matching them most of the time from GW19 onwards.

        Interesting.

I'm making ground on the leaders. I was 60+ points behind a few weeks ago, now I'm only 40 behind. I'm really worried for this Christmas period though.

So many games, so many injuries, chances of postponed games, rested players, I feel my squad is ripping apart slowly. Jara and Emerton aren't good enough subs and my goalie combination which looked so good before is looking suspect. I guess I'm better off than most teams since I have high team value which I can use to slowly grind my way forward, but it won't be high for long if I don't make good decisions. This run in Christmas here is crucial.

      Needs reworking in my opinion.

Midfield and attack are where you'll get all your points, so that's where you should concentrate.

      - Choose 3 of your defenders and downgrade the other 2 to a <4.5 solid starter (Jones, Givet, Bardsley, Knight) and a 3.9 bench sitter (Simpson).

      - Get another premium striker. There are lots of really great choices about, and with money available, you'll have options if your chosen player turns out to be a dud.

      - Midfield is weak. Needs fantasy solids. One of Van Der Vaart or Bale is needed. Spurs are a really good team now, and they can be relied on to score most games.

I don't agree with Simpson, Newcastle aren't keeping cleansheets. Simpson maybe cheap, but that is all he has going for him. I think it's better to go for another 4.3M+ defender that can actually keep cleansheets, than Simpson who will effectively be rotting on your bench every week as you tinker with your 14-man 'usable' squad.

Simpson is playable in the odd fixture. Newcastle aren't that bad defensively, especially with Tiote, Barton and their centre backs returning. Also, he's dirt cheap, and he wouldn't be doubling on Newcastle defenders since he doesn't have Krul.

when was the last time bolton had a cleanie though? i feel like every time i've benched foster he's raked in mad pts. i don't see many teams getting a cleanie against blackpool this season, they're all about attacking football whether they're down 5-0 or not. granted i think they'll lose, but will definitely score and i think we could be in a for a high scoring affair. too many people still write off blackpool as a fluke.

I think both will concede...I do think B'Pool are slowing down a bit away from home...it's 50/50 to me, so I'll go with the bookies since they are pros at ranking this kind of thing

we forget sometimes that they make the odds so that they can prosper from them too. bookies odds don't mean crap, especially in a sport as unpredictable as football. birmingham away w/in form keeper and defence less likely to concede against as many against a fulham struggling to find goals than a bolton playing a blackpool w/nothing to lose thriving on an open game.

I hope that the snow DOES start effecting things once again. It will then throw up more double gameweeks in the second half of the season, and will also expose people's benches and the quality that they have on them.

I have MGP and Konchesky on my bench and they are fine to come on now and again, if we get a blizzard! πŸ˜€

        I think it actually sucks.

Say you lose 4 players because of weather, doesn't matter how good your bench is you won't field 11.

Then in the double game week other players can just get your players in and get the double points they wouldn't have had otherwise.

nah, it adds too much luck...if that NEW game is off I'd lose Drogs, A Cole, Carroll and Enrique...as well as Fabs and VDV being out...none of them are weak players, except Enrique...if the wrong games get called off you could lose 6-8 players - has nothing to do with bench quality

Was thinking of keeping Fabs on bench but worried that VdV may not play.

Already took 4 pt hit to get VdV and Davies in on Saturday night last week. However, is it worth my first 8 pointer of the season to get Cahill in for Fabs now?

Tricky one. If you have a solid team given that VdV may not play then don't do it.

If you can't field a decent 11 assuming VdV is out then it's probably worth an 8 point hit to get rid of Fabs for someone cheaper but do it NOW, and for a player that is nailed on with a decent fixture this GW.

Hi Drogs, sorry for delay in replying but had to leave to get bus in to work.

If VdV plays then I'm sorted. If not then I only have one player on o bench who'se active this weekend, Konchesky.

Thinking that I'm probably better off leaving as is and then getting it sorted next gameweek as don't really want to take an 8 pt hit.

Of course, Cahill could go mental on West Brom today and make up the 8 pts on his own though

I have Four players involved in the Newcastl gam and am worried about a posponement.
I also have 12m in the bank due to bringing in elmander for torres and Nasri for Fab at no cost

Question is , is it worth spnding four points replacing Nolan with Cahill ?
If newcy game goes ahead it probably will be borderline , but if posponed then i will have an extra player.
    Good idea?

I even thought about spending four on Rooney for Drogba , howver if the newcy game goes ahead that could hurt , hence thing the Nolan for Cahill swap the best

After 91 pts last week, i,m worried about my team for this week, only got 3 players from mark picks. Most of the rest are playing each other:

carroll vs boswinga, vdv vs konchesky, nani vs jones, foley vs al-muhammadi.

wanted a defender (cahill or kolarov) in but guess i need to take a hit if i,m going to replace fabs but dreading it. AHHHHH dilemma dilemma.

should i transfer fab out and play areta & bowsinga, dropping carroll on the bench? means i miss out on a defender transfer for 2 weeks ( probably want drogba or areta replacement next week)?

don't let your season rely on scout picks, they rarely mean anything as long as you have a good capt. choice and the right stars that keep you on par w/everyone else in the long run. look at fpl picks too, they give you more options and a chance to get a second opinion and spin on things as well as capt./vc choices.

when people ask when someone will rise or fall, we are all pretty much guessing. I guess we could just ignore those questions when asked. Im on Total FPL 5 times a day like a junkie. when fabs was hurt last time, his price went down similarly to what Im expecting this time. He may be only 25%-30% to fall by thursday night, but he will be dropped en masse on friday. perhaps definitely is strong but if you want to wager on it Id be happy to lay down 20 quid.

Sod it. Just taken another 4 point hit (8 altogether) for Caroll to Elmander.

Probably won't pay off (like the hit I was going to take last week but didn't would have), but I don't care! I probably won't wake up until half time anyway and by then I'll already know my fate, well nearly.
