Newcastle’s 5-1 mauling of local rivals Sunderland in Gameweek 10 has so far proved a turning point for both sides. While Steve Bruce masterminded the Black Cats to a revival which saw them go the next four undefeated, recording wins over Stoke and Chelsea, Chris Hughton’s Newcastle have slumped alarmingly.

Today’s 3-1 defeat at the Hawthorns was his side’s third defeat in the last five and since putting 5 past Sunderland, they have scored just 5 more goals in the 6 league matches that have followed. Andy Carroll has scored 4 of those goals and assisted the other for Peter Lovenkrands at West Brom today. That stat, above all others, emphasises just how much the Magpies are relying on their big centre-forward…

Defensively alarm bells are also ringing. Following the superb 1-0 win at the Emirates that immediately followed the win over Sunderland, Newcastle have conceded 8 goals in their last couple of away games. That’s a trend that they have to stop or risk being sucked into the relegation mire.

Next weekend’s home encounter with Liverpool is followed by three away trips in four, at Birmingham, Spurs and Wigan. That list of opponents could be worse but clearly, Chris Hughton has work to do ahead of that run. He has a defence that’s conceding goals and an attack that looks impotent and over-reliant on a rather obvious “Plan A”.

Injuries and suspensions have not helped matters. With Kevin Nolan sidelined, Hughton has searched in vain for a reliable partner for Andy Carroll. While Shola Ameobi has fulfilled that role in flashes, he has struggled to maintain his form. Hughton appears to have little alternative but to restore Kevin Nolan up in support of Carroll once his skipper is fit. Newcastle’s passionate following want a 4-4-2 and a more attacking outlook, but Hughton seems restricted by resources; a January hunt for a striker looks on the cards.

Andy Carroll’s goals have meant that Fantasy Managers may well have been oblivious to Newcastle’s decline. The striker, owned by over 50% of Fantasy Premier League sides, has continued to deliver points and fully justified his generous price tag. There will however, be a growing concern about just how long Carroll can going on carrying the burden for scoring the goals to keep Newcastle’s head above water.

Today’s brace from Watchlist climber Peter Odemwingie (priced at 5.1) with the inevitable FPL Bonus to follow, demonstrated that there is even stronger value available elsewhere. If Newcastle continue to struggle and Carroll begins to falter, we could yet see the North East number nine abandoned.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Just popped in to see scores and have to point out a few things about CArroll questioning!

We are in a definate bad run of form currently and its not great for the team, however we are without both of the CB's that have helped us look secure until these last 2 bad away losses. Plus our central Mid has lost one half of its hub in barton, as well Arfa and Nolan, our most creative players being out. man U without Vidic, Ferdinand, Nani, and Rooney...?

I would say that Carroll, especially for the value, is as useful as ever. As you say the vast majority of our goals come from or through him and this will continue to be the case. Whilst for the team I agree its not great, he needs at least more creative players off him, if not a real partner (Shola does not count!). However for fantasy owners him being the fulcrum of attacks is a good thing, today we were very poor and he still got an assist. He keeps scoring and when he plays well often gets BP. "If...Carroll begins to falter" is alas looking for FF problems that aren't there...if Nani starts to falter he too will be dropped!

We are in a slump and I agree team wise it could be a tough few games, but for the money, esp if you got him for low 5's Carroll is still great value.

JUst a few thoughts that I have thrown out...make of them what you will!

Dunno. You've ridden the wave of Newcastle optimism for a while. It's not that Carroll is suddenly a bad player, it's that Newcastle's fixtures are terrible and there are now a lot of strikers that people want.

True, I just think that for the money there is no-one going to give you a regular returns as Carroll - he has proven that he can score regardless of opposition and get points regardless of the result. I made a mistake with the wildcard to temporarily get rid of him, one I quickly rectified. I'm a sticker.

Fair enough. When he's been fit Odim has had as good if not better returns as Carroll. For the next 5 fixtures it's a no brainer, Odim stays Carroll goes. I might get him back in the january WC though for shizzle.

Interesting im finding it hard to fit them in the right way. I feel there are alot of options in the forward division
Its the defence i cant find many options for.

I agree with you on Carroll's value. Infact I still have him adn will for atleast one more even though ppl have started selling him for 3-4 weeks. But the situation is different now with nobody to invest in midfield most ppl are left with a lot of extra cash on their hands which can be easily used to have an average strikeforce of around 8 mil now and with far better options at hand too with the extra cash extending the range of strikers that can be brought in (tevez, elmander, davies,RVP,Bent,Torres,Gyan) all of them IMO are better options for the next few weeks specially when money is not a problem anymore.
