After three-and-a-half months out injured, Chelsea talisman Frank Lampard returned to the substitutes’ bench, and ultimately the pitch, during today’s London derby against Spurs. Whilst his game time was limited to 15 odd minutes it was refreshing to see the midfielders return from a football and Fantasy Football perspective.

Lampard hadn’t played since August when he underwent a hernia operation and then tore a groin muscle during his recovery. At first Chelsea looked able to cope without their goalscoring midfielder but performances have stalled and Chelsea have been looking a team in disarray.

Fans of the Blues will hope that Lampard’s return provides a fillip to the teams performances which during his absence have bordered on tragic. Considering that Chelsea have managed only 1 win in their last 8 matches in all competitions, any boost will be welcomed.

His inclusion on the bench was a surprise and the word from Carlo Ancelotti was that he was going to be short for the massive trip to Spurs;

“No, he’s not fit again. He’s out. I can say this with a smile because he trained well but it will be a very tough game against Tottenham and we didn’t have a test with him in a game.”

Usually Ancelotti is pretty candid and honest with his team selection calls so for Lampard to appear on the bench after these comments was a huge surprise. Was the Italian looking to provide a psychological boost to his players?

Unfortunately for Chelsea Lampard’s presence didn’t provide them with enough to get all three points at White Hart Lane – something they should have collected if it weren’t for Didier Drogba’s late missed penalty. One things for certain the miss from the Ivorian will surely see Frank Lampard back on spot kick duties.

Given the random nature of Fantasy Football this season and the lack of consistency amongst the so called big names and expensive players, the return of Lampard should create a nice differential for those players trying to find a way of clawing back deficits in their respective leagues.

If the midfield man can reach form of seasons past he will surely see his ownership rocket back up to the levels seen at the start of the season and during the past few years. A lot will depend on how Ancelotti eases him back into the team and on how Chelsea’s form improves, but a player who almost certainly guarantee’s goals and assists will be hard to ignore.

Liverpool might have some good fixtures coming up. However, they are not the same pool we have seen before. I will surely shy away from doubling up liv players.

I already have Torres & Kon' , I might keep them only because i don't want to take points hit anymore. !!

Drogs is out of Malaria but not at all confident.

When he had that ball for penalty, by his expression i was sure he is going to miss it...

I wanted to get that homesick idiot.. no don't know what to do.

anyways, I wanted to ditch my Australian captain. Planning towards that..

Yeah I really feel for people who ditched carroll for him. I myself ditched carroll to get a forward line of rooney, torres and tevez but it hasn’t quite worked out yet either!

Really considering getting carroll back in for tevez and then taking a punt on getting in lamps with the additional funds

There is no way he wont play. He just needs to sort out what happens in January, until then he is still a city player and will play if available – and he isn’t the sort of player that wont give his all when he is on the pitch

Unless I hear news to the contrary between now and Friday night I'm planning on playing them both this weekend.

If anything, Tevez has shown a real attraction to the fans and, from the tone of his statement, is sorry to them. He's got a minimum of two home games until Jan 1. I think he's going to try his heart out in those last two games for the fans he's leaving behind.

        Agree/disagree?

Is it that much of a risk? I don't see any high value strikers screaming for investment at the moment (though that could change after tonight's game), and it's been a good season for bench players.

I don't know. I've switched him for Torres. I'm thinking that Torres might tear it up in the next couple of months with his relatively easy fixtures coming up.

I'm not a Tevez owner but for those who are I wouldn't nee jerk and get rid now, In all likelihood he'll be off in January so plan for it, but don't pull the trigger until he's actually gone or a move seems imminent. He's been unhappy all year and this hasn't seemed to affect his performances, so I don't see that changing in the next few games. Plus, as I mentioned yesterday, his price should be protected soon (I'm surprised his suspension flag hasn't been lifted already), so owners 'should' still have a couple of weeks to see how he and Man City react before losing any cash.

This is a great site but there is WAAAAYYYY too much kneejerking. Yesterday people were talking about Drogba's performance being the final straw and that was it. He nearly scored 12 points, looked better than he has done in weeks and has now scored in successive matches for the first time in months. If you've held onto him this long, now is not the time to get rid in my opinion.

Yes, his first goal was lucky. Funny isn't it how we only analyse players' goals to that level when we already think there is something wrong with them. He missed a penalty. So have other players this season. He was on for a half and made a difference in Chelsea's play in my opinion. If a Torres or a Rooney was on fire, then it would be a different story but Drogba is getting better and there are no obvious replacements. Could change after tonight's match of course.

Let him start firing in the goals again in a revived Chelsea side and I’ll gladly bring him in, but not before then. Lamps may make the difference but they still have 2 very difficult fixtures coming up. If drogba doesn’t score against arsenal in 2 weeks then we’ll definitely know he is a shadow of his former self!

God I hate this season, all down to bloody luck as you can't make any asumptions about any games or players.

My team got spanked all over this GW just like they did the week before and the one after, and so on.

Now all the toys are out of the pram, here's my team:

    Hart (Foster)
    Konchesky | Jones | Vidic
    Nani | Bale | Maxi | Cahill | Jarvis
    Carroll | Elmander
Sub: Drogba | Kolarov | Coleman

My most pressing issues are Drogba and Elmander, problem is theres no one to replace them with.

Of the ManU forwards, who is the more popular choice, Berbs or Rooney?

The game is more about luck than people like to think. You can't control anything that happens. All you can do is shift the odds in your favour, by picking 90minute players, setpiece takers, track fixtures, etc.

2 year old picking captains. Great strategy. I'm second in my most important mini league and I know that the guy beating me has his nine year old advising him.

Nothing much wrong with most of that team. However, you've got too much invested in your keepers. I would say that your most pressing issue is in your midfield because you don't have Samir Nasri.

Nothing wrong with those forwards. You bought Elmander for a reason. He hasn't scored in three matches. It happens with a striker

Fair enough but that midfield needs a little work in my opinion. I understand the idea of taking out Drogba and tonight's match might well help with that.

To an extent, I don't believe in good/bad fixtures when it comes to midfielders/forwards but then I'm looking for players who will consistently deliver me points over a long(ish) period. Barring injury/failure to start, I will not transfer a player out without giving him at least four weeks in my squad. Things can change so fast.

I agree that luck has been a much bigger factor this year as anyone trying to accurately predict the course of the season will have got it wrong – hopefully some of the big name players will start showing more consistency soon, my money is on rooney, lamps and fabs to do just that. So get rooney in (though perhaps this weekend is not the best fixture for that)

    GW 18...

    Foster (Carson)
    Vidic Kolarov Konchesky (Coleman Simpson)
    Nani Nasri Bale Ferguson (VdV)
    Rooney Tevez Carroll

Got two free transfers so might get rid of VdV if he ain't back any time soon (?), who are the obvious choices this week?!

VdV out is probably a good idea if he isn't back soon and you don't need both him and Bale anyway. Chris Brunt is still an absolute bargain at 5.6 and has some nice fixtures in general.

Posting this for third time..Help needed please!

    have two freebies!

Cahill and Elmander out for Bent/Fab(if fit) or Torres/Nasri!

Had cahill from GW10 so had him for the best part of his returns and nasri returns will diminish in fabs presence. Ideally would love to have torres and fabs but i feel bent will outscore or offer similar returns in the next few weeks.

    Suggestions please!

I think your team looks fine to be honest. You might benefit from losing Hutton, and with Hart, you should downgrade your other goalie to a 4.0 like Mignolet or Al-Habsi. Why not keep Cahill until he goes oriental? Why you want Torres is just unfathomable to me though... I'd rather have Emile Heskey at the moment.

With good fixtures and one of them performing even worse than Rooney and Drogba, I am a bit surprised that 49 out of 50 times, Torres is mentioned, but not Ngog?

After the weekend, I am left with some question:

    1) With 5-3 in cleanies so far, which team will shut out more, Wigan or Stoke?

    2) Did Elmohammady play fullback or winger Saturday?

    3) Did Fat Lampard look right? (my stream was rather dodgy)
