[sbu_large_image] The Knee Jerk

Evidently the collective mix of the home football clubs, the local constabulary and Mother Nature didn’t feel particularly Christmassy this Boxing day as yet again Premier League games succumbed to the weather. At least this Game Week festive cheers and merriments were quashed with (some) time on players side to make required team changes.

An hour and a half before the 11:30 am (GMT) deadline it was announced that both the Blackpool versus Liverpool game, a game which was widely tipped to be postponed,  and more surprisingly the Everton versus Birmingham game would have to be called off. The former due to a frozen pitch, a legacy of the lack of undersoil heating, and the later due to frozen pipes. Maybe these clubs were on the naughty list this Christmas. Actually maybe if they had of been they’d got a lump of coal they could have used it to heat up their damn stadiums!

Needless to say the late announcements meant last minute reschedules of Fantasy Football teams. Tim Cahill was dumped earlier than planned by many in light of his forthcoming Asia Cup dalliance, Leighton Baines was knee-jerkingly disposed of in order to field 11 players and the reserve goalkeeping situation was amended with the Ben Foster shaped hole meaning the none-playing Stockdale or Mignolet provided inadequate support.

What made it worse was that Captain poll favourite Nani, with 35% of the vote, was no where to be seen – not even on the bench. Chat of flu during the week may go some way to account for his absence but the explanations that he was either receiving a rest in light of the hectic Christmas schedule or attending a Michael Jackson (Thriller era) lookalike convention may also have held true. With Manchester United’s next game coming this Tuesday, Nani owners will be sweating on his fitness and inclusion. Check back to Team News and the Twitter feed on the site to keep up to date with all information.

The key Knee Jerk today was surely the returning Rafael Van Der Vaart. There was a concern this week that the Dutchman may not be risked given his recent spate of injury problems, however, owners will be thankful he did with a two goal contribution seeing to Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-1 away victory over Aston Villa. Once again “Rafa” outshone Fantasy Football rival, but Spurs teammate, Gareth Bale.

The Welshman is owned by a staggering 55.6% of players- surely the single largest act of collective blind faith in Fantasy Football history. Van Der Vaart has only 18.8% ownership in comparison but even with his injury problems has contributed a significantly larger amount of points per game this season. Continual frustration for owners of the Welshman lies in the fact that he always seems to “assist” the player who assists Van Der Vaart. Surely more and more owners will be looking to switch to the Dutchman, either from Bale or as a replacement for the departing Tim Cahill. Given his recent injuries however, whether Rafa can play three to four games on the spin would have to be questioned.

Change of tactics this year, the last couple of years i just had a first team with as cheap as bench as possible, tried playing this year with a squad, done me a big favour the last few weeks with games being called off but makes it so much harder picking who to put in, plus the added hair pulling of seeing all those points on the bench (i thik 30 points is my record so far!)

The difference can often be as little as the subs off the bench. Those 'cheapies' have to be first team starters.

i agree most of the time,
i tried a tacti for a while the other year where i bought the cheapest injured defnders when midfielders and attakers were realy doing well , that way i had 5 midfielders and 3 attckers with only one defender playing each week. Occasionaly i got bit if there were other injuries but scored some monstor points and had my best year

Anyone else think you should be able to actually pick your vice captain instead of leaving it to form or value? I had Nani captain yesterday, but wanted Berba as vice, but there was no way of doing it, so now I'll have Drogba like most men and their dogs 🙁

Yeah he'll probably do well, but Berba would have been a differential, I almost chose him over Nani, but midfielders always have a chance of getting a lot bigger points haul.

            Adam.

I believe that the weather forecast said that temperatures will start getting warm again so we should see the Blackpool games go ahead at DGW time.

Adam is good value anyway, double gameweek or not. The key to getting the most out of the doubles is to get players that you'll want to keep on for a while after the dgw is over.

So, guys like Adam, Torres, Varney, N'Zogbia, Rooney, Berbs and Gerrard are good solid choices that you can pick up in time for GW24 and not have to worry about getting rid of all of them a week later.

    @ Bojan,

Had to take s small risk in giving the armband to VDV, this time it worked. He's keeping the armband.

Tonights game is not going to be pretty. Best we can hope for is a score draw. Would be great to see the young Pole in between the sticks.

Hey guys, I have a questions concerning shortterm strategy. I'm around 30 points behind the leaders in my minileague, unless Nasri has a stormer.

    Herre's the plan: MPG,Elmander>VdV,Torres (2 freebies)

Could get Tevez instead of Torres as well, but would not be able to make up some ground. What do you think Tevez or Torres?

It's no fun making last minute transfers when you've just had two postponements. Mad panic on whether to hold the transfer for a week or risk bringing in a player whose game is later called off. This time I called well and brought in Rafael for Jones.

Won't be looking at weather forecast until tomorrow morning.

Yep. I've managed to resist big changes on dodgy weather weeks for exactly that reason. The most annoying thing about this week's postponement was the fact that Liverpool haven't played. I'm really keen to see what's going on with Gerrard and Torres. Until I see them play, I'm putting my money on Chelsea...

Just looking at the Beta site player stats and spotted some hidden gems amid the midfielders. Switch to last four weeks and there is one player who is streets ahead of the rest on goals, key passes, attempts on targets...BALE.

The fact that he is shown as making 18 appearances in those 4 gameweeks probably helps a bit but the stats do not lie.

Let's not be hasty. The numbers do not lie. Both players present a considerable threat and if key passes are not being converted to assists it is because team-mates are not finishing.

You could make the case that the quality of the passes may be poor but for this stat, patience is likely to be rewarded.

By the by, my post was more about the filter not working.

Looking at this week's forecast i'd be surprised if more than a couple of midweek games went ahead......

A LOT of snow potentially forecast. It''ll all depend how much rain there is to go with it......

All good. Bale to VDV is tinkering but I think it works in the long term even if it smacks of point-chasing.

Bardsley less risky than Rafael but I would go for the ManU defender.

Got a free transfer for tomorrow, don't desperately need anyone, but Lee to Barton sound good? Or could do Lee to YaYa?

    Nasri -> Adam
    Worth it?
