[sbu_large_image] The Knee Jerk

Evidently the collective mix of the home football clubs, the local constabulary and Mother Nature didn’t feel particularly Christmassy this Boxing day as yet again Premier League games succumbed to the weather. At least this Game Week festive cheers and merriments were quashed with (some) time on players side to make required team changes.

An hour and a half before the 11:30 am (GMT) deadline it was announced that both the Blackpool versus Liverpool game, a game which was widely tipped to be postponed,  and more surprisingly the Everton versus Birmingham game would have to be called off. The former due to a frozen pitch, a legacy of the lack of undersoil heating, and the later due to frozen pipes. Maybe these clubs were on the naughty list this Christmas. Actually maybe if they had of been they’d got a lump of coal they could have used it to heat up their damn stadiums!

Needless to say the late announcements meant last minute reschedules of Fantasy Football teams. Tim Cahill was dumped earlier than planned by many in light of his forthcoming Asia Cup dalliance, Leighton Baines was knee-jerkingly disposed of in order to field 11 players and the reserve goalkeeping situation was amended with the Ben Foster shaped hole meaning the none-playing Stockdale or Mignolet provided inadequate support.

What made it worse was that Captain poll favourite Nani, with 35% of the vote, was no where to be seen – not even on the bench. Chat of flu during the week may go some way to account for his absence but the explanations that he was either receiving a rest in light of the hectic Christmas schedule or attending a Michael Jackson (Thriller era) lookalike convention may also have held true. With Manchester United’s next game coming this Tuesday, Nani owners will be sweating on his fitness and inclusion. Check back to Team News and the Twitter feed on the site to keep up to date with all information.

The key Knee Jerk today was surely the returning Rafael Van Der Vaart. There was a concern this week that the Dutchman may not be risked given his recent spate of injury problems, however, owners will be thankful he did with a two goal contribution seeing to Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-1 away victory over Aston Villa. Once again “Rafa” outshone Fantasy Football rival, but Spurs teammate, Gareth Bale.

The Welshman is owned by a staggering 55.6% of players- surely the single largest act of collective blind faith in Fantasy Football history. Van Der Vaart has only 18.8% ownership in comparison but even with his injury problems has contributed a significantly larger amount of points per game this season. Continual frustration for owners of the Welshman lies in the fact that he always seems to “assist” the player who assists Van Der Vaart. Surely more and more owners will be looking to switch to the Dutchman, either from Bale or as a replacement for the departing Tim Cahill. Given his recent injuries however, whether Rafa can play three to four games on the spin would have to be questioned.

Haha no worries mate. I just think Cahill has a great chance of scoring a couple against West Ham. But if it's a case of money then VDV is obv. better over the long term.

Apparently WHAM have conceeded 12 goals from headers this season. Can see Cahill increasing that.

That said VDV will probably get close to double figures once more this week!

Problem is, Cahill usually delivers vs the bitter sides. I see Hammers getting a draw or maybe snatching a win.

You make a very valid point my friend. It's just VDV's unreal ppg of 7.7 making him indispensable. It's a toss of a coin between Cahill and Nasri, Asia Cup has just swung it for me

Ordinary week this week, used two freebies on my defence so I'd actually be able to field a full team.. Brought in Hangeland as a quick fix and Rafael.. Who would've thought West Ham would score 3 away, Fulham really are struggling this season.. Anyway got one freebie this week and considering my options.. Could hold onto Hangeland one more week or get rid, maybe for Baines.. Or finally get rid of Malouda for VDV, was foing to give him til WC but VDV looks to good to pass up right now.. Thoughts? Cheers

I bought in Hangeland as a knee jerk too to field a full team. Tempted to leave him in as have biger problems to sort, not having VDV being the main one.

Any other options to get VDV in rather than Malouda out? Chelseas fixtures are good and too early to assume Lamps return will hinder Malous output, it may improve it

Yes I do think that Nasri has a huge potential for scoring against Wigan and that is why I am getting rid of Cahill instead of him especially in view of the Asia Cup. Yes Foster will almost definitely concede but will rack up save points so you stand to gain around 3/4 if you go second 1

I cant believe how many people are talking about getting rid of Nasri! We have Wigan and Birmingham next, yes they are both away games but our away form is great, and don't worry about Van Persie and Cesc being back, all that will do is create more space and chances for him. Yes, he might not be on set pieces as much but we never score from them anyway.

My thoughts exactly. People need to find better ways to get VDV in. Unfortunately, they are all so obsessed with Torres' mediocre form to sell him for someone cheaper and use the money to upgrade a cheaper midfielder for the Dutchman. Nasri should be one of the last people on the chopping block.

Right people, priority this week is to get a Liverpool defender in with their excellent fixtures, and Samba needs to go. Thinking that Johnson is the best bet, all the others seem to be at least a slight rotation risk, and GJ definitely carries the most significant threat.

Annoyingly, I'm 0.3 short of a simple Samba to Johnson transfer, so am thinking of swapping Foster (who has terrible fixtures until the second wildcard) for Gordon (good fixtures) to create the extra 0.3. The only question then is, do I take a point hit for Johnson? Or do I just play Coleman and wait until next week for Johnson?

Favouring taking the hit at the moment, or does anyone think it's worth swapping Samba for someone like Skrtel, and keeping Foster?

        But Johnson loves bombing forward!

Just thinking about it, and assuming that I take a point hit in some other week in the near future, which is inevitable, it doesn't actually matter which week I bring Johnson in, because I'll be making the same number of transfers overall, obviously costing the same whichever way I go about doing it. Unless Johnson gets injured in their next game..

I think their next five gameweeks are the best run of fixtures I've ever experienced playing this game... I know that they are shocking, but surely they'll do something in the next few weeks!!

Yup, and they've won their last 4 home games. I would love to get Gerrard but it would involve a few hits and although it could pay off, i can't justify it.

In your case, id take the risk and get Johnson. Begovic is a good bet for 2 games, Gordan for longer.

That home statistic is interesting though. Tricky playershuffle though -- Torres/Gerrard is behind Drogba Tevez / Fabs Lamps. If any of these starts firing the dgws might have little impact... Thoughts?

I am so itching to do Bale->VDV with protection possibly ending which would result in an automatic +$0.1m rise. With GW closing tomorrow it isn't as much a kneejerk as usual, but I probably should wait... and there is the possiblity that protection might not end yet. I guess I can afford the 0.1 rise that is risked by waiting.

Oh - and a guy in my work League has 93pts with Nasri to play. We have very similar teams except Salcido (he has Huth), VDV(Fabregas) and Elmander (Davies), but I have 46 pts less. He had Tevex as capt and went from miles behind to just in front. Shows how much the right capt choice and a good round can make up a big lead.

I go on this site quite a lot, but always make my own decisions, sometimes good and sometimes very bad. Like going Tevez as captain today worked but I also gave Torres the captaincy against Everton earlier in the season which massively failed.

Relatively. But then I'm a hopelessly-optimistic Arsenal fan, I'm going to be confident just before we get dismantled again by Barca in a few months.

I'm just glad you lot don't have a proper right winger. For all the faults of Laurent and Hardy, Clichy has essentially been to blame for basically every goal we've conceded in the last few games. I'd swap him for Assou-Ekotto right now, I honestly would.

Still not convinced on Rooney. He looked good today, but the way the other 21 players did (United's 10, very well; Sunderland's 11, like a Steve Bruce team vs. Man United), it'd be hard to look bad.

And has he looked good in any other games since his return? He's been poor every time I've seen him.

Hooray! You and I are the only ones ignoring the Pool fixtures, at least offensively. I can't possibly spend 11.5 on Torres when there are so many cheaper strikers in twice his form, no matter the fixtures. Gerrard is much more tempting, but also pricier than his results merit, and many more, cheaper options.

It's very hard this week.. Torres, Drogba and VDV are the main choices I have, I don't fancy Nasri for the armband away from home.

            A tentative '+1'

He's probably my 3rd choice. I've currently got it on VDV, but that's very provisional.

              Not Tevez hes at home

Cant see myself being brave enough to give it to Drogs.

              VDV for me i think.

I could see myself captaining Torres this GW.. only so I could have my captain play the last game on Wednesday 😛

Always like it when my captain plays the last game, I think he's the best choice with VDV anyway, he is very good at Anfield.

VDV is very tempting as well.. He looked like he was enjoying his footy tonight. World class.

    Cracked it !!

    Hart - Kingson
    Simpson - Konchesky
    N'Zog - Adam
    Fab - Gerrard
    Whingie - Varney
    Davies - Torres
    Tevez - Rooney

Shit, that sounds like a plan - will never work !!!

Me neither, I'm probably getting far too involved in this double game week malarkey

Blackpool players are cheap though & have dgw's coming out of their ears

I think Foster will be better in the long run, I have Jasske and Foster since the beginning of this seasons and it works out great.

Spewing, had 1.3 spare for the standard Bale to VDV. Went to do the transfer at 1.19am and VDV had already risen. Must be the earliest price rise ever. Si do I take the 4 point hit Evra to Bosingwa (got Rafael for MU coverage) so I can upgrade Bale to VDV?

I'm going for the toilet-stealer over Bos. Bos is a rotation risk whereas Johnson has lots of easy home games.

    ok you crazy bastards
    talk to me

    Al habsi (jaask)

    Baines Kolarov Kyriakos Rafael (simpson)

    VDV Nani Nasri Malouda (Nzog)

    Carroll Drog (Elmander)

Got 2 transfers and was thinking
    Malouda > Gerrard
    Jaask > Gordon

Cant swing Tevez in for Elmander unless I ditch Malouda for a 6.7 mid (yaya, ethers, MGP etc.)

what say you oh oracles of bitter wisdom?
