Man City’s 1-0 win over Blackpool at Eastlands encapsulated everything that has been wrong with the Christmas and New Year Gameweeks. While the match itself will likely go down as one of the season’s best, it delivered frustration in the extreme for Fantasy Managers.

Hat-trick hero Mario Balotelli made a mockery of any opportunist investment following his strikes against Villa by missing the game with a knee injury, then, once the game kicked off, the irritation levels just escalated.

Carlos Tevez, sporting the Fantasy Premier League armband from many of his owners, fluffed a first-half penalty and then seemingly went out of his way to deny us any chance of compensation. Tevez missed an abundance of chances – even managing to lose his footing in a slapstick style, having rounded keeper Richard Kingson with the Blackpool goal gaping. He’s ruined the first Match of the Day of 2011.

For those who doubled up on City’s raiding left-back Aleksandar Kolarov, the pain was magnified further. The Serb, so prominent in City’s attacks in his last two starts for Roberto Mancini’s side, felt the wrath of his manager as he continually wasted possession and opportunities to deliver telling crosses. On 58 minutes Mancini had seen enough and Kolarov was subbed – just two minutes before the 60 minute cut-off for a clean sheet.

The City situation is just becoming annoying now. Potentially a rich source of attacking and defensive points, the options to rotate and tinker available to Roberto Mancini are beginning to bite hard with the full-back situation summing up the current plight. Short of taking the plunge with Joe Hart or the unfashionable and expensive Kolo Toure, it’s looking impossible to find a secure option in a defence that has now kept 10 clean sheets, the best total in the league. I’m expecting to see Kolarov miss out at the Emirates in the week now, with Pablo Zabaleta presenting a safer option for Mancini at left-back. Who can really say when we will see the Serb back in the side, let alone cement his starting role.

As for Tevez, I’ll forgive today’s crimes with the prospect of plenty of points from him in Gameweek’s to come, but I can’t help but think that his fortunes over the past three Gameweeks epitomise the suffering of the Christmas period – 16 points on Boxing Day, rested the Gameweek after, zero points with golden opportunities missed today.

Fantasy Managers have been reluctantly riding a Gameweek roller-coaster of late, and very few of us have managed to get off the thing smiling. Tevez and City certainly delivered one hell of drop today.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Liverpool are coming right , the return of Gerrard and Arbeola +agger means they have a much more balanced looking team. They might not reach the heights of previous seasons but im betting that they are emerging from their slump

what are you on about triggerlips Liverpool have been dire, I watched the Wolves game and that was the WORSE performance I have EVER seen, lets not get excited about a lucky 2-1 win at home to an average Bolton team.......and the chances of Arbeloa playing in the double game week is HIGHLY unlikely!!!

    My current team is:

    van der Sar
    Konchesky Evatt Bardsley
    Nani Adam(c) Nasri VDV
    Tevez Carroll Drogba
    Subs: Carson Kolarov Etherington Dann

I have not used my transfer yet, and have 1m in the bank. Any suggestions - I was thinking Tevez/Drogba --> Torres, but he really doesn't seem to want to be at Liverpool.

There's divided opinions on the future stability of Konchesky's place in the team. When I saw the teamsheet yesterday and he wasn't even on the sub's bench it appeared to indicate that he was simply being rested. I haven't changed my mind. After all he's been an ever-present for Hodgson at left-back, although performance-wise he's hardly set the world alight.

Aurelio came in and offers a better attacking threat from that position, which doesn't necessarily comply with Woy's much-slated negativity in the way he sets up the team.

Jury is still out. Liverpool defensively doesn't look a profitable avenue for the dgw in any case. I'll probably hold onto him.

Finally a DGW. Already have Torres. Looking to bring in Skrtel, Adam & one of Evat or Varney.

There is a lot of hype at the moment of Liverpool "turning a corner" but bave you seen their away form? 6 defeats from 9! While they have a double game week is it really worth taking a hit when the defenders may only get 2x 2points per game. With all the back 4 open to rotation too you may not get much of a return?

OK I get that, but surely there needs to be an improvement before "turning a corner"? Liverpool have lost 3 on the bounce away from home and had 1 reasonable 45 minute performance yesterday. I might be over cautious but I'd rather wait for a good performance and/or result

        It seems you can...

You can play 2 transfer wildcards a season. One wildcard can be played at anytime, the other can only be used between Gameweeks 23 and 27. This extra wildcard will be available after the start of Gameweek 22 (4 Jan 19:30) up to the Gameweek 27 deadline (12 Feb 11:30).

What with rotation risks, defensive options are limited indeed. Just looking at the Watchlist and my own shortlist here are some viable alternatives:

    Bardsley
    Coleman/Baines
    Hutton
Huth/Shawcross - tough fixture this week, but not too bad thereafter
    Nelsen

Glen Johnson may be worth considering for his attacking potential and nailed on starting position.

Keeper might be a good option. Kingson's a good shot stopper and will get some save points.

I assume he needs to get 3 saves in one game to get the save point? i.e. if he gets 2 saves in both games he wouldn't get the save point?

Crainey's another option going by the watchlist.

I'm not knee jerking over all these sudden defencive rotation risks, ie Kolarov, Konchesky.

I knee jerked Coleman out and soon as I did he starts killing it and looks like a sure starter.

I have two frees this week, first one is MGP - Adam. Other transfer one of these:

Foley - Blp Bol Ful Sun defender (rotate well with my other defenders, atleast until WC)

    Krul - Harper (heard rumours)

Maxi Rodriguez - Anyone below 8.7 (haha yes a differential that didnt workout as i hoped)

As I have been keen to stress his goal-scoring record is actually very limited. He scores rare but spectacular goals.

BUT I still got him in as a cheap and fairly reliable (so far) route into the City defense.

He's a good option. But he was never going to be a godsend.

Why are the Manc fans getting so defensive recently? Cannot take any banter, all accuse anyone with an opinion as being 'anti-united'. With the attitude they now have people will be quite rightly 'anti-united fans' regardless of how the team does.

As a LFC fan I have taken more than my fair share of stick, I just take it and if I don't agree I will defend my point of view...better than just moaning about people being 'anti-Liverpool', cause I couldn't care less. Surely everyone loves their team, despises others and some sit in the middle, like Blackpool.

Perhaps they are getting overly defensive for a reason.....City?

Really stuck with this one. I think he will retain his place. Unless a bust there was no reason to leave him out completely yesterday so it should suggest a full rest. Will Defo get 1 of the next 2, as Aurelio isn't match fit either. Depends how he does then I guess. I'm keeping and playing him.

I've got my Blackpool list down to 3 players, who is the best option?

1)Phillips for blackpool would be worth a punt for the dgw if he was a sure starter. A menace for defenders when he's on the pitch.

2)Adams is going to be on almost everyone's team sheet-for good reason

3)GTF hasn't been that bad on the wing this season, and is consistently starting and contributing crosses into the box.
