A battling performance by Gerard Houllier’s side this afternoon leaves Chelsea outside the top four looking in as the New Year was heralded in by a cracking game at Stamford Bridge.

With Arsenal, Spurs and both Manchester sides all winning yesterday, the onus was on the champions to follow suit, but the visitors spoiled the party by snatching a last-gasp leveller to leave London with a point -as well as their tally of seven yellow cards- in a markedly physical contest.

Frank Lampard’s spot-kick opener suggests he has regained the position as number one penalty taker, following Didier Drogba’s miss at Tottenham a couple of weeks ago. In spite of this, Drogba’s goal and assist takes his Fantasy Premier League (FPL) total to 20 points (pre-Bonus Point allocation) in the last three game weeks, which, happily for his Fantasy Owners, is more in line with his early season points returns, a huge improvement on the 17 points in his previous seven game weeks, 11-17.

Remarkably, Chelsea had failed to score more than one goal in a league match since game week ten but, facing a porous Villa defence, they at least found themselves amongst the goals going forward, though a poor defensive performance will have done little to instill confidence in Carlo Ancelotti’s title ambitions. They now have chalked up just one clean sheet in their last eight league games.

The nature of the draw, in particular, will be bitterly disappointing to the Italian, as Chelsea, having trailed for most of the second half, seemed set to win it at the death only to throw away their lead seconds from the final whistle, with Houllier’s side scoring more than one goal in an away game for only the second time this season.

Most pleased of all, undoubtedly, will be Sir Alex Ferguson, whose Man United side now lead their rivals by six points with a game in hand, as Chelsea’s hangover now continues into 2011.

Shola is crap. So crap. If we want to solidify our place in the prem players like him need to go. Nice guy and all but he's SO bad and he seems to be getting an attitude too! Carroll's injury really exposes us up top, Id rather see Ranger than best though!
However Barton and Tiote looked quality again today.

Agree with Shola, Best is pretty awful too. Tiote is great but really let himself down with those theatrics at the end, HATE that sort of carry on. Valuable win for us there.

He and Jonas are embarassing with that. I did have a few word with a tit in my local who called him a Geordie Twa* - think Ivory Coast is fair way from Tyneside, but it shouldnt happen I agree.
Good win, poor game, we need a new CF and Best and Shola need to go and be replaced.

Sholas a decent backup striker but you need someone else to play with Carroll (when fit).

Lovenkrands and Best need to go... maybe Robbie Keane in?

No. Keane would be a corrosive influence in the dressing room and we dont need him on the pitch id say. I dont like him, never have, sorry if that sounds irrational! We need to stick to 4-5-1 variants Id say to be solid for now and Keane wont let us do that, while bringing very little. Id play Ranger more, Ameobi not the worst back up yes, but he is so inconsistent, slow and generally poor! Best is very poor too yes as is Lovenkrans, although he seems like a nice guy!

No definitely not Robbie Keane, we play best with Carroll as the spearhead of a 4-5-1 Keane would change the system plus he would want high wages and would also push Ranger down the order

Bit weird that one. I really wasn't impressed by Essien today - be interesting to see what the stats throw up.

Still, I don't envy whoever had to assign the bonus for the Chelsea game - really difficult to call.

Also is it worth bringing in evatt/skrtel/johnson(can afford johnson if i shift Carroll)for dann for a 4 point hit? Once again the Opta Stats prove that the bonus judges seem to consider total passes to be the most important stat.

    Essien - 61 passes, 1 key pass. = 1 BP

    Malouda - 37 passes, 6 key passes. = 0 BPs

This really doesn't seem right to me.
