Thanks to the Carling Cup Final and Charlie Adam’s dodgy temperament (amongst other factors), this week was shaping up to be a painful one for many a Fantasy Manager unless a few brave decisions were made, particularly in the midfield area. With popular options such as Cesc Fabregas, Samir Nasri, Theo Walcott, Rafael Van der Vaart, and Adam all missing out, fortune -and plenty luck- favoured the brave souls who plumped for Aston Villa and Wolves midfielders in particular.

Villa annihilated Blackburn 4-1, with six saves from Paul Robinson preventing the scoreline from further embarrassing Steve Kean’s side, as Ashley Young and Stewart Downing racked up the points for their Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Owners. Young bagged two goals and an assist, whilst Downing helped himself to a goal and an assist and the pair picked up three and two Bonus Points respectively, making their hauls 18 and 12 for the gameweek. With a great run of games ahead, there will no doubt be plenty investment in the pair over the next few weeks.

Over at Wolves, Mick McCarthy’s side recorded their best-ever Premier League win to jump out of the relegation zone. Jamie O’Hara and Matt Jarvis each scored a goal as Blackpool, without Charlie Adam, self-imploded, mainly thanks to DJ Campbell’s pointless red card which now deprives Ian Holloway of his star striker for the next three games.

O’Hara has now scored in his last two games and although he will miss the next league match with parent club Spurs, is proving to be essential in the club’s relegation battle. He picked up 2 Bonus Points, taking this week’s tally to 10. Adding this to his 3 last week, and the loanee is looking like a real alternative to Charlie Adam. Jarvis’ goal and a Wolves clean sheet saw him pick up 8 points, and, coming off a 2 Bonus Point performance last week, also looks key to his club’s survival chances.

With four games to go before we can draw a line under what has been a thoroughly frustrating gameweek, these four players currently sit at the top of the midfield scorers for gameweek 28, and any team with a combination of Young plus one, or even two, can expect a nice little boost up the rankings tonight. Depending on that number of points hits, of course.

12 points is surely better than you could've been anticipating?! You could've transferred in Barton.

It could easily have disrupted his training and preparation for the game this week. Seeing Villa's goals though, Blackburn were caught on the break more than a couple of times, and Nelson's game has never been built around pace.

Young and Downing looked astonishingly good in the highlights.

Was going to get Beckford in for a laugh next week, although his finishes today came off Bramble and courtesy of a screwed shot 5 yards out. Perhaps not... 🙂 They all count though.

Scots Gaelic is extremely similar to Irish Gaelic, and oddly (seeing as they are in proximity) both of those languages have no similarities to Welsh. You'd think the 'Celtic' languages would all be similar enough, but Welsh is very different.

There are a few theories. The Scots/Irish link is undeniable, as the Scots as we know them today ARE Irish. (Scotland coming from the Irish tribal name Scotti). There was also Irish kingdoms and territories in Wales, however this is much later in date (after the Roman withdrawal from Britain in AD383, so mainly around 5th Century, yet there is no Gaelic influence at all in Wales in terms of language.

Presumably Welsh must be the closest surviving relative of pre-saxon English considering it was independent from the Roman withdrawal to Edward 1st.

Well the Welsh themselves ARE the pre-Saxon British, the original inhabitants were pushed into the hills of Wales by the Saxon invasion after the Roman withdrawal. The name 'Wales' itself comes from a Saxon insult for 'Strangers'

The pre Saxon English also survived in Cornwall and Brittany, do Cornish or Breton bear a marked similarity to Welsh?

I'd have to check that, they are definitely linked linguistically but not sure to what extent.
Welsh, Irish, Breton, Cornish, Scots, and large parts of England have remarkably similar cultural heritage for thousands of years. It's really the Romanisation that some countries experienced that created the divergence.

I remember there being something about Cornish on some Welsh news show a while back. Sounded very very similar indeed.

I'm pretty sure it very nearly died out as a language, I think there is a big push the last few years to preserve and promote it.

Surely the Saxon and Norman influence on language is more pronounced than the Roman. Otherwise we could expect to find Latin etymology in Welsh which modern English has imbibed through Norman French.

Wales, Cornwall, England and Brittany being equally Romanised.

Sorry I should have been clearer, linguistically Latin comes in a distant third with Norse and Teutonic languages, I meant in terms of actual 'Celtic' culture and identity. Though to be fair the Romans also held Wales too.

Welsh is older than English (apparently its the oldest European language still used), and English actually takes parts from Welsh, amongst many other languages. I believe that's true anyways, I may well be wrong.

You're right, I'm not sure they can verify the oldest language bit as there are a few contenders but Welsh is certainly up there.
English is a very modern language and a complete mongrel of Old Norse, Teutonic languages, Latin, French, with a few others thrown in.
