A new regular – the Masterplan takes a single issue haunting a good deal of Fantasy Managers and explores an array of options on the table – discussing the merits of each. This time around, it’s the Carlos Tevez conundrum, as the bustling Argentine continues his decline from hero to zero.

The Problem

Carlos Tevez has scored just a single goal in his last nine appearances and on Sunday sat out of the 2-0 defeat to Chelsea after failing a fitness test on a groin injury. Reports this week stated that Tevez remains a doubt for the gameweek 31 clash with Sunderland at Eastlands. Tevez is clearly a problem for his Fantasy owners then (over 37% of Fantasy Premier League managers), who must decide whether to hold and hope for an upturn in fortunes or rid themselves of a player who, at one stage, looked almost essential.

Plan A

There’s little need to engage the brain here – Robin Van Persie is surely the obvious replacement. Frighteningly consistent since his return from long-term injury, the Dutchman made a recovery from a recent knee problem to once again score in the 2-2 draw at the Hawthorns. Arsenal also have a double fixture in gameweek 33, a factor which will surely see Van Persie maintain his near essential status.

Plan B

For those already in possession of Van Persie, the Tevez issue could well offer the opportunity to free up some cash for heavy investment in other areas, particularly midfield. The timing is good – both Blackburn’s Junior Hoilett and Sunderland’s Danny Welbeck appear to offer rock-bottom priced assets as forwards, who could well offer a steady stream of attacking returns and Bonus Points in the coming gameweeks.

Fetching one of these two for Tevez would allow funds for either Frank Lampard or an Arsenal midfielder ahead of their gameweek 33 double fixture. This also clears the way for a move to a possible 4-5-1 Fantasy formation, with attacking defenders like Everton’s Seamus Coleman and double gameweek assets like Birmingham’s Roger Johnson and Chelsea’s David Luiz, coming to the fore, along with Stoke’s Robert Huth, Blackburn’s Chris Samba and even Villa’s Kyle Walker.

Plan C

Opt for a differential – the likes of Luis Suarez, Andy Carroll and Darren Bent all offer potential lower down the price bracket and have relatively slim ownership amongst Fantasy Premier League Managers. This looks to be a decent option for those chasing a lead who need to gamble on a differential – Suarez looks the most assured having established himself as the central figure in the Kenny Dalglish revolution. The Uruguayan is the form striker in the Fantasy Premier League, but still represents a gamble given Liverpool’s fixtures, which appear to offer little assistance with City and Arsenal looming.

Plan D

Take a risk on a similarly price option – Wayne Rooney is player in question here, having shown strong form in recent gameweeks (5 goals in 7 starts), clearly offers the potential to replace the kind of scores that Tevez was producing. That potential is however, somewhat disrupted by rotation in the United forward line, with Alex Ferguson seemingly uncertain over Rooney’s partner in attack. Rooney tends to drop deeper with either Javier Hernandez or Dimitar Berbatov in tandem and that is a slight concern – it works for Tevez however and spot-kicks, so profitable for the City man, are also a factor behind Rooney’s appeal. The other major issue here is United’s blank fixture. Forthcoming games against West Ham and Fulham look favourable, but when gameweek 33 arrives, you’ll currently have to bench or sell.

The other alternative is to gamble on a Chelsea forward – take your pick from Dider Drogba, Nicolas Anelka and Fernando Torres. The latter looks the most assured of starts but, on current form, the least assured of returns. Chelsea’s gameweek 33 double fixture falls in his favour though, making him an obvious route for current Tevez owners seeking to gamble on a major differential with the potential to explode.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I really hate the 1 or 2 people that can't use eBay and ruin it for everyone else.

Rule 1: If you want something, and it has no bids on it, but on the minimum bid so that it can't get removed.
Rule 2: No other bids until the last 30 seconds.

What's the point in outbidding me with 4 days to go? Think I'm not going to see it?

I know its a long way off but how about this for a cheat for next season. It obviuosly only works for gw1. Pick a cheapie player who wont play and make him captain. Then set your emergency captain to form. Surely the best scorer that week will be your captain? Yes?

My ideal England team versus Wales given the currently available players:

    Hart
    Walker, Smalling, Jagielka, Cole
    Barton, Wilshere,
    Lennon, Rooney, Young
    Carroll

I'd have Cleverley, Jarvis, Wickham all in the mix for subs as well. Bugger the old failed guard.

    King of Hell

The king of this living hell is a charming creature called a giant Scutigera centipede. The size of a puppy it scuttles around caves, carried along by many pairs of long skeletal legs.

They are highly venomous, one bite and it's off to hospital or worse. In many years of travelling and filming I've never seen anything quite so creepy. In fact the hairs have prickled on the back of my neck as I write this.

The likelihood is that van Persie will feature in both matches due to a lack of options for the Dutch: Klaas Jan Huntelaar, Theo Janssen and Arjen Robben have all pulled out of the squad with injuries.

Cocach Bert van Marwijk has replaced them with Ruud van Nistelrooy (who he'd originally omitted from the squad) and the relatively inexperienced forwards Luuk de Jong and Jeremain Lens. So van Persie is going to be pivotal, I reckon.

i'm loving it, the piwesh chawla dog costume article is hilarious. this made me laugh too
Following the controversial reprieve of Mahela Jayawardene after what looked like a perfectly legitimate catch against New Zealand, the ICC have clarified that the TV umpire saw clear evidence on the TV pictures that a small worm had poked its head up from the Mumbai soil between Nathan McCullum’s fingers, and headbutted the ball into his hand. So, technically, it was rightly given not-out.

I'd say a United defender at the moment isn't so great, 2 cleansheets in the next 6 (including blank) would be my guess. I would guess Stoke will only keep 1 cleansheet in the next six (avl or blp). So Dawson seems the better option, but I wouldn't really class him as a superb one still.

      Helpful I know...

Now that Utd have a gameweek in 33 I'm more inclined to look at Smalling for RJ now. Kolarov can bog off for Luiz and I'd keep Huth for his goal potential. Rotate with Coleman.

Can't be arsed faffing about with keepers. Foster can stay. Cech too expensive.

              Get Rooney for Bent too.

So what's everyones thoughts on Jose returning to the Prem?

Where do u think he'll go and will it be the end of this season or next?

I'm guessing it's gonna be one of the top 6:
    - United: Most likely IMO especially if they win the title, I think that would be about right time to leave. I also think that why Joses at Madrid as knew it wouldnt be long term so he could bide his time waiting for Fergie to leave.
    - Chelsea: Unfinished Champions League business? Only if him and Roman can't kiss and make up as I think that why Jose left coz Roman was sticking his ore in.
    - City: He'll have the funds but would he go their if he wanted the United job long term?
    - Arsenal: Could happen if Arsenal finally decide they wanna win something?
    - Liverpool: Kennys position isn't yet permanent, funds seem to be available and he looks take hold of big underachieving clubs.
    - Spurs: Possilbly if Harry is next England manager?

The only two clubs that he would like to come to now are the two manchester clubs. Chelsea is not a possiblity as long as Abramovich is there or else that would be an option too. I really don't see him opting for any other club than these three.

Really hard to call. If spurs don't make CL i think they can be ruled out. I don't see Fergie leaving yet. Then it's between Chelsea and City. As a Chelsea, it would be nice to see him back, don't know how likely that is though, would almost rather see Hiddink back. My money would be on City if they make CL.

Why wouldn't Fergie leave if they win the title tho? He's beaten our record then so what's left? He would have to win another 3 champions leagues to beat our record which could take a long time!

You're right it would be an ideal time for him to leave, on top. It's more down to whether he has the desire to continue.. he hasn't really hinted at anything, has he? Also Mourinho in United will not be good for Chelsea!!:)

He hasn't but I don't think that's his style, he will just decide one day and go i think, announcing before hand does help anyone, it could effect player moral etc.

He did that before, announced he'd retire at the end of the season and I think it all went to shit a bit. Said he'd never announce his intention again.

I agree RBJ, longterm replacement, but not immediate. There's also a big bit of Jose that will want them to beg him to come, he won't go running at the first offer!

Really don't see him coming to Utd after Fergie, someone else will do it first. Jose will want to be the saviour, not the successor.

This Jose were talking about tho, what if someone else comes in and does really well? He may not the chance then. He seems like the obvious successor to me.

Who is going to come in and do a better job than Fergie? Jose's massive ego is exactly why he won't follow Fergie directly, as the successor will always be compared to him.

I'm not saying better but some one could come in and win back to back titles, I don't know who as it's hard to know before hand. Not many people had heard of Wenger before he took over Arsenal, u don't no someone couldn't do that at United!

United job is a bit of a poisoned chalice, you'll always be compared to Fergie, the squad overall is pretty poor so you'd need a big outlay to rectify that and its doubtful whether the Glazers would stump up the cash.

If Fergie wins the title, he'll quit, because he'll know how bloody lucky he's been this season.

The United squad is creaking, and he should get out as soon as he can.

Yeah it's possible, but when Fergie goes Scholes and Giggs will go as well. VDS won't be there either.

This Utd team wouldn't be top of the league now without Fergie- if ever there's an example of what a genuinely brilliant manager can do with a team, then this is it. The more I think about it, the more I just can't picture a smooth transition to anyone new. Or whether a fresh outsider is better than promoting Phelan or someone from within.

It'd be Scholes, Giggs, VDS out for sure. Ferdinand isn't getting any younger or less injury prone. Gibson, Anderson, Carrick, aren't good enough for Man Utd IMO. Rooney needs careful handling, jeez it would need a good few top quality players brought in - the likes of Schweinsteiger etc it wouldn't be cheap so can't see it happening. They'd have to make do with lesser players so could be the start of the decline.

Looking for a plan to get rid of Saha. Team is linked.

I was thinking of possibly Sahaa to RVP and Young to Adam. However this does not leave any cash in bank and an inevitable hit next week to bring in Luiz for Kkoralov.

    Any other good ideas?

Defoe ? He might be one of your punts but still... Defoe -> Carroll or someone, f*ck knows who and then the upgrade. Downgrade R.Johnson as well? Or instead, you have Foster as cover for Brum defence... I am doing Evra -> Smalling and Saha -> RVP 4 point hit, but its an easy transfer(s) to be fair.

        Cheers Greg.

I had been contemplating Defoe to Welbeck and Defoe to Carroll but unfortunately Defoe to Carroll leaves me with no cash. It might well have to be Welbeck but am not sure he is a nailed on starter.

If Kelly was fit i would consider RJ to him but can't think of a cheap defender that would really add much to the squad.
