Having twiddled thumbs to an alarming state during international and FA Cup breaks, finally we have a gameweek to consider as the last furlong of the season approaches. We’re wasting no time; climbing straight back into the saddle to greet the forthcoming gameweek with another “frisking” of the fixture schedule, helping to identify the teams who look set to gallop home and those who risk falling at the first…

The Highs…

Chelsea
They still have a glimmer of hope of retaining the title and, in their favour, the fixtures offer Chelsea the opportunity to push United and Arsenal all the way. It’s the mini-run of gameweeks 32 through 34 that jumps out and hands Fantasy Managers plenty of reasons to consider their key assets.

Three home fixtures in a row against relegation struggling clubs (Wigan, Birmingham, West Ham) as well as a trip to another candidate for the drop – West Brom, hand Carlo Ancelotti’s side a highly promising double-header and promotes the likes of David Luiz to the top of watchlists for defensive returns, while those with the cash to splash will surely target Fantasy Premier League (FPL) heavyweight Frank Lampard at the sharp end. We may even see Fernando Torres earn some suitors once he’s broken his Chelsea duck.

Arsenal
Like Chelsea, investment in Arsene Wenger’s squad will cost us dear but looks pretty much essential over the next four gameweeks. A double in gameweek 33 presents their two toughest forthcoming fixtures, but around this, victories and goals look likely (BLA blp LIV/tot bol) against some of the most obliging defences on offer. With the Emirates injury list clearing and Champions League distractions disposed of, the familiar names – Robin Van Persie, Cesc Fabregas, Samir Nasri and Andrey Arshavin will all surely find themselves into our Fantasy squads.

Aston Villa
We’ve included Gerard Houllier’s men in this weekly run-down of the fixture schedule for several weeks, and despite current form, they still warrant our attention. With just one clean sheet in their last ten Premier League games, the Villans have failed to offer us defensive returns, but their upcoming run (eve, NEW, whm, STK, wba, WIG) presents the opportunity to turn that form around. Kyle Walker, at just 4.0 in FPL, should remain prominent on our radars then.

As should attacking trio of England internationals Ashley Young, Darren Bent and Stewart Downing. All three will look to build on their performances against Wales at the weekend and really should be good for further profit in the next few weeks if Houllier is going to save his job and keep Villa up.

Sunderland
There’s a tough trip to Eastlands this weekend but, given that City have only 3 goals in their last 4 games, this may just be the time to take on Roberto Mancini’s side. After that, Sunderland have favourable fixtures until the end of the season – Fantasy Managers should be on alert.

It’s the closing games and forthcoming three home matches in particular that will attract attention. West Brom, Wigan and Fulham all pay visit to the Stadium of Light in April, surely handing strikers Danny Welbeck and Asamoah Gyan the platform to boost their goal tallies and reputations. With injuries clearing at the back and Lee Cattermole returning to protect from midfield, Fantasy Managers may also be tempted by Sunderland’s low-price options in the back four.

Also to consider: Man United – their next four in particular will have plenty of goals and clean sheet potential although things stiffen badly from gameweek 35. Wolves – if you can look past their blank in gameweek 33 then Mick McCarthy’s side have the potential to return investment on their budget wares Birmingham – Alex McCleish’s side have gameweek 33 double with a vey reasonable run of opponents around it – if their squad can cope, they should continue to offer mid-price potential, particularly at the back.

The Lows…

Stoke
Apart from the recently discovered double gameweek fixture, Stoke’s forthcoming run of opponents is quite simply abhorrent. Around the gameweek 34 double [CHE, tot, —, avl/WLV, bpl, ARS] Stoke have a blank gameweek and four fixtures that in all likelihood, will see them ship plenty of goals. With Robert Huth and Asmir Begovic their most prized Fantasy assets, we can expect to see sales of both, despite the promise presented by their double header with Villa and Wolves.

West Ham
Avram Grant’s relegation scrappers continue their spirited climb up the table but, given their next five fixtures, they’re going to have to do it the hard way. The Hammers will play host to league leaders Man United this coming weekend , whilst also facing trips to Chelsea, Man City and Bolton in the coming weeks. Their tie at home to fellow strugglers Aston Villa in gameweek 33 could prove vital – with Thomas Hitzlsperger preparing his left foot to punish his former club. Investment in the German and the likes of Scott Parker and Demba Ba could be tempered by the fixture list then – despite their outstanding current form.

West Brom
Roy Hodgson outfit remain undefeated since he took charge at the Hawthorns in mid-February but now the Baggies upcoming fixtures, particularly their next four, will pose a real challenge to that record and their survival hopes.

A resurgent Liverpool play visit this weekend, before trips to Sunderland and Spurs sandwich another home game with Chelsea. There are some stern defences on the horizon then, presenting a sizeable barrier to Peter Odemwingie’s goal potential and the creative talents of Chris Brunt in midfield. Hodgson has tightened things at the back but Fantasy Managers are unlikely to put any faith in the cheap options on offer, particularly with those opponents looming.

Be wary of: Fulham – another team who offer the temptation of a double fixture around a schedule of opponents that appears to offer little promise. Man City – a double fixture is in the offing in gameweek 36 but until then City face a blank and tough away tests at Liverpool and Blackburn.

Advice please: Front 3 reads Rooney, Tevez, Saha

I was going to shift Saha anyways, but is Tevez a doubt and what should I be considering? Team Reads (try not to laugh too much but I am 4 transfers away from a good team!)

    Foster
    Johnson Coleman Huth Clark Elmo
    Barton Bale Nasro Lamps Fergie

Oh, and 0.00 in the bank since Fat Frank came in!

Wait for news on Tevez but u could do Saha -> Bent/Zamora/Gyan/Wellbeck/Ebanks etc depending on funds or consider Tevez & Saha -> RVP & someone.

I trail by 30 points in my league - 8 points hit would see me get Luiz in for Elmo and RvP & Wellbeck up front with the Roonster....worth it?

Ooh, could do Saha-Carroll this week, Elmo-Luiz next. Or just do Tevez-VP. Or Saha to Welbeck, that gives bout 3mill to spend on upgrading elsewhere. Plenty of options, depends how many transfers you have/want to make methinks.

my team still feels like it's in ruins 🙁 best advice?

    Foster (al-Habsi)
    Walker Luiz Coleman (Hangeland) (Gohouri)
    VDV Downing Lampard Barton Arteta
    Berbatov Tevez Doyle

    Was originally thinking:

    Arteta>Adam
    Berbatov>RVP

Not sure now...what you guys think? That the best option still?

C'mere who is holding on to Huth? I have Begovic too and I have been considering a move out for the big guy for weeks now, top of the list is Kolarov and Huth OUT for me, with Coleman/Walker and Carr staying till season end.

Other than that I am looking at Tevez OUT RVP IN this week and maybe 4 to do Nasri/VDV OUT Lampard IN to have team of:

    Foster
    Carr/Kolarov/Coleman
    Nani/Lampard/VDV/Adam/Young
    Rooney/RVP

    Begovic/Huth/Walker/Zigic

    Any thoughts?

With Arshavin hitting a bit of form again the Arsenal midfield looks a minefield again, u would assume Fabregas and RVP will play when fit with 2 from Arshavin Walcott Nasri filling the other spots, IMO going with one of those 3 is a risk but it feels like one that needs to be taken.

JP u not worried by Wenger going back to his favoured:

          Walcott Fabregas Nasri
          -------------RVP----------

That seemed to be his "first team" a few weeks ago.

Long term, yes. But Arshavin should be fine for this weekend, with his form and Walcott not being fully fit - at least I assume he won't be.

Just seen that Bellendy is threatening to retire from International Football, and on Wales performance at the weekend, I wouldn't blame the guy. He was the only player who looked like he had any of the talent required to unlock the England defence and I actually, for the first time ever mind, felt a bit for him when it was clear the rest of the Welsh team were just inept.

Bale was a huge loss, and England were poor enough themselves in the second half, but for the first time in a long time I was kindof glad to have the likes of Duff/Keane/McGeady/Doyle in our starting lineup, made me appreciate the "wealth" of attacking options we have over Wales. Then of course we played, and Gibson and Whelan were their usual crap selves, but I was very impressed by O'Dea I have to say.

After all the arguing on Saturday, it would be wonderful if Bellamy retired now, 3 caps short of Giggs' total games for Wales.

Yes, but it wasn't about the number of caps. Giggs had a ridiculous history of pulling of out internationals to be fit as a fiddle and play in United's next game (yes, I know lots of players do this but Giggs had done exactly that either 19 or 29 times, can't remember which. Probably 19).

Giggs is without a doubt up there as one of my favoutire players ever, but Larcano had a point.

No, Lorcano (sp?) said something along the lines of:

For all you say about Bellamy, at least he has continued to turn up for internationals, unlike Giggs.

Or there abouts. And then the usual candidates waged war for a while. 🙂

I can easily understand the decision to retire from internations as we are a piss poor team, and for someone of his quality it must be frustrating. But it was a valid point.

I know the Welsh team are struggling at present but they need players like Bellemy to help them and not demorilise the camp even more by saying he doesnt want to represent them.

O'dea is going out with one of the girls I went school with... random fact... but aye, he's a decent centre half.

to be fair to him, everytime I saw a shake of the head from him he wasn't making a big deal out of something that wasn't, passes just weren't going to feet and he was right to be frustrated. Everytime Ramsey got the ball he gave it away or ran around in a circle and then passed it back, looks like it was a little soon to be making him captain having just come back form long term injury

I think he'll carry on. Haven't seen any of these new quotes myself, but before the game there was an interview with him and he said he had thought about retiring from internationals a few times, but as he's one of the few players we have with real experience and quality he felt he has to carry on to help the youngsters develop. As I said I've not seen any new quotes, so maybe journalists putting 2+2 together for a story, perhaps. Hopefully so anyways, as the team does need him badly.

Bellamy already doesn't play more than once a week so I think any retirement decision might have more to do with preserving his body- though I haven't seen any article, so don't know what his quotes are. He's usually pretty honest.

Ramsey does that a lot (turn back with the ball) when there's nothing in front of him. That he did it so often on Saturday was more down to the lack of movement or space for anyone to move into than anything else. Don't really see how Bale would have made much of a difference to the score, as we were knocking back to the goalie constantly in the first half, only for him to touch back to the CBs. But at least he would have been someone to cause a bit of danger and might have encouraged more forward-facing football.

BTW- Danny Collins. How can a player for the most tactically strict team in the Prem be out of position so often?

To be fair to Bellamy, I'd probably retire if I was forced to play in the same side as Steve Morison. The lad was an absolute machine in the Conference - and still is at Millwall - but it's nearly good enough to be playing international football. He was absolutely dreadful at the weekend.

He should be a sub forward at the moment, oh if only big Johnny Hartson was still around. Morison's chance came and went, a little through ball to him in loads of space but he panicked and did some ridiculous heavy touch with one foot. Was easy for Terry to deal with then. Could almost hear him thinking 'shiiiiiiiiit this is it! what do i do!'

        Ok in that case, would you play Young in place of any of these;

Van Persie, Dempsey, Adam, Lampard, Nani, Rooney

You can see my quibble. 😀 Perhaps the question above should be which two would you bench out of, Young or Beckford?

This is going to sound callous but I wish Kolarov would just get injured or something and stop coming up with reasons not to sell him.

I am buying Kolarov this week if Boateng is badly injured; no real other option and need to get rid of Djourou (other defs are Luiz, Walker, Coleman and Carr)

That wasn't the point I was hoping to make, but it's probably a better one.

Most of you have had a go at this, but for those who haven't...best move for this GW on a postcard please....

    Foster, Stockdale
    Baines, Coleman, Kolarov, Kelly, Djourou
Nani, VDV, Nasri, A Young, Arteta
    RVP, Berba, Zigic

I think long term I'd look at:

        Arteta to Adam
        VdV to O'Hara
        Zigic to Gyan
Berba to Rooney/Torres/big name striker who's scoring well

Does it make a difference if I'm 46 points behind my main rival and beating him is the only real goal left for the season? His team is:

        Begovic, Stockdale
        Baines, Coleman, Terry, Mummy, Foley
        Nani, Nolan, Dempsey, Adam, Bentley
        Rooney, RVP, Defoe

No difference at all. I'm not a fan of looking at rivals' teams, I just want as many points as possible.

Arteta > Adam and then I'd look at getting rid of Berbatov too, in order to afford Lampard. Luiz in for one of Luiz/Djourou next week too.

    Hey guys,
I'm not satisfied with my team, but no transfer seems to make it much better this week.

    Bego (Szcz)
    Coleman Baines Kolarov
    Young Barton Silva VdV Nani
    RVP(c)Rooney
    (Zigic Carr Walker)1.8

Wanted to do Young>Adam to raise some cash for Chelsea's big boys, but he really impressed and Fulham don't concede much at home.

Any suggestions or should I save my transfer? I only fancy longterm moves at this stage of the season.

The would be happy to play any of your front 13, only concern for me is your keepers. Begovic fixtures suck and Chesney is injured.

Cheers. I know, but the only keeper I fancy atm is Cech and I don't get him without taking a hit. I have to fix this problem later, I guess.
Only thing I could do is Szcz>Foster, but then I don't see Birm keep any CS in the future.
