Craig Gordon has announced that he still remains well short of fitness as he battles to regain the number one jersey at Sunderland. An article in the Northern Echo this morning quotes the stricken Black Cats stopper who is still struggling with a knee injury…

“I’m not very close to being fully fit to be honest. I go back to see the specialist in the middle of next month. It’s a possibility (that I will not be fully fit until next season). A strong possibility. I’ll need to wait and see what the doctor says. I’m in his hands and he will tell me what I’m capable of doing from there.”

This comes as significant news for Fantasy Managers due to the potential offered by Simon Mignolet. The young Belgian keeper has started the last three league games for Steve Bruce, conceding 4 goals and keeping a superb clean sheet at the Emirates in gameweek 29. That game saw a 10 point haul with 2 Save Points and 2 Bonus for Mignolet, bringing the 3.9 valued prospect to the attention of Fantasy Premier League Managers.

Although Sunderland travel to Eastlands this weekend, the clean sheet against Arsenal on their last away trip will give them confidence, while City’s goalscoring form is hardly convincing right now. After this, Sunderland’s fixtures improve markedly, as our recent “Frisking the Fixtures” article outlined. With this latest news on Gordon’s fitness, it seems likely that Mignolet will cement his starting role – providing a significant boost to his already healthy Fantasy stock.

Look out for his ranking in today’s Watchlist update; a full Watchlist article assessing Mignolet’s potential will also follow.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Who should I be looking at as a replacement for Saha (7.6m)?

    Gyan? Carroll?

    4 point hit worth it?

    a) arteta>adam
    b) doyle>welbeck
    c) no hit, play Walker

    other transfer is berbs/tevez>RVP (depending on fitness)

    so I have made a somewhat long term plan. Who knows whether I can stick to it! Usually I can.

    GW31: Zigic->Hoillet and Barton->Adam
    GW32: Begovic->Mignolet
    GW33: Coleman->Luiz
    GW34: Kelly->3.9 defender
    GW35: Huth->Dawson

    Awesome!

      No way would he go to Utd. They wouldn't spend the money, they couldn't afford his wages and he wouldn't want to go there due to the weather, city & squad.

      When was the last time they signed a truly world class player at the top of their game anyway?

      Not really. They're all a bit cack aren't they?

      It's a real problem this week that most of the teams that have soft games don't offer great options up front or aren't great prepositions for the next few gameweeks. Newcastle and Fulham have good games but their strikers aren't great and the following fixtures are dire. Birmingham and Everton have a decent home fixture but I don't see any options there with Saha injured, Beckford an unsure starter, Zigic a doubt and Jerome and Martins unconvincing. I have to get rid of Saha but absolutely nothing jumps out at me.

      If you have RVP then you're already covered Arsenal wise.

        I'm in the same boat - need to get of Saha. I need someone really cheap max 4.8m. Had thought of Welbeck but don't really fancy him away to City.

          Yep. Welbeck is one of the names I'm juggling but there are so many cons.

          Away to City this GW. He's a slight doubt. Even if he does play he is pushed out wide in a 4-5-1. Gyan is so much safer but then you can't save the money.

          Everyone is looking to save money so they can bring in Frank the Tank.

    I'm contemplating an 8pt hit to get RVP in my team for this weekend (already done Nelsen > Luiz and would need to free up money elsewhere to afford RVP).

    Currently considering something like:

    Meireles > Steven Reid (good form, only 4.1M, would probably be benched most weeks though)
    Zigic > RVP

    Worth it? I could get RVP in for Bent or Rooney with only a 4pt hit but I really like the thought of having that front three for the rest of the season. I'd be captaining RVP this week which should offset the hit if he does well.

    Usual caveats about him coming through tonight's international apply.

    Thinking about this transfer plan for the next few weeks. Chasing a 70 point lead and have an almost identical team to my rival, so need to change things up.

    GW31: Rafael -> Luiz (free)
    GW32: Nasri, Meireles, VDV -> Lampard, Adam, O'Hara (1 free, 8pt hit)
    GW33: no transfer
    GW34: Rooney & Zigic -> Suarez & Gyan/Welbeck (2 frees)

    Which would give me this team by GW34:

    Foster
    Luiz, Coleman, Huth, Kolarov, Djourou
    Lampard, Nani, Downing, Adam, O'Hara
    Van Persie, Suarez, Welbeck/Gyan

      Taking out VDV in GW32 when Spurs are at home to Stoke doesn't seem like a great move to me. Nor does taking Rooney out in GW34 when he's at home to Everton. I'm sure there are Champions League concerns that could perhaps justify these moves but they just don't feel right.

      It seems most people are set on taking an 8 point hit to shoehorn Lampard into their team by any means necessary before GW33. If I were you I would reconsider the Rafael > Luiz mov this week and instead maybe do it in GW33 for no hit. Also I would save the Rooney > Suarez move until GW35.

          General rule of thumb on FFScout - the more confidence people deliver a statement that cannot possibly be known - the more truckloads of salt to take it with.
          No-one outside of Manchester United know whether Hernandez will or will not start with any certainty.

              Yeah fair point, I'm just offering a word of caution. Quite often you see on here that there is absolutely no chance that someone will play, only for them to bag a brace.
              Consider your sources and all that, but as you say, he has just been playing for Mexico so its likely he might be rested.

        Going quite well, as I said it's my first time trying this shizz out so I'm finding my natural impatience the biggest trial. I want to plant a seed, then be eating the tomatoes the next day, feck all this waiting around. 🙂
        It's a good lesson I suppose. My courgettes have just sprouted, so I'll be transplanting them by the end of the week hopefully. No sign of the cape gooseberries I planted at the same time though. Chilli plants have extra leaves as do the peppers, looking quite good. I think.

              Not really - they need an amazing amount of room. You can grow them in a very large bag, but bear in mind that their tendrils grow out to as much as fourteen feet. Also, the weather near Dublin should suit them outside ...

      +1

      Kicked the ugly old troll to the curb last week. This gameweek was the only one I was worrying about. Right now Citeh are sheeeeyite though and Tevez is out of form. Everything bar this one good fixture says Tevez should be exchanged for someone who provides more value for money and more profitable long term fixtures.

        Any Dutch types or those knowledgeable about Dutch football?
        Newcastle being linked to two players in the Dutch league - Kolbeinn Sigthorsson from AZ and Georginio Wijnaldum from Feyenoord. The latter is pretty handy on Football Manager, but I've no real knowledge of either of those players. Are they any good? I'm loathe to do the youtube scouting as it's a waste of time generally. They only show the good bits.

            Ha!
            As a Lancashire lad I don't mind a bit of clogs, it's in the DNA 🙂
