As reported earlier this week, Craig Gordon has announced that he remains troubled by a knee injury that has seen him sit out the last three league encounters. Having excelled in his absence, young Simon Mignolet now looks nailed-on to feature in the Black Cats’ end of season run-in, presenting an extremely attractive option for Fantasy Managers.

There should be no doubt about Mignolet’s talent. After his man-of-the-match performance against Arsenal at the Emirates, manager Steve Bruce hailed the Belgian international’s heroics and talked up his prospects at the Stadium of Light…

“He’s got a big part to play in the future of the club, we’ve unearthed a very good young goalkeeper. It’s a big pat on the back to everybody whose helped get him here. The biggest compliment of all is to himself. He’s a fantastic goalkeeper, although we’re not surprised he’s done so well because we work with him every day. He’s brave, big and the potential is all there.â€

In a straight Fantasy Premier League (FPL) comparison with Gordon, Mignolet comes out on top with 63 points compared to 56 – both players have played 15 games. Mignolet just nudges ahead on clean sheets, from the 12 that Sunderland have achieved this season, the Belgian has been in between the sticks for 7 of them. Save points have also come is way with 5, 7, 2 saves in his last three outings and before that, way back in December against Fulham, Mignolet managed 7 returning 2 points for his owners.

For Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Managers, now couldn’t be a better time to invest in Sunderland as a source of Fantasy points – a tricky trip to Eastlands at the weekend being the only real thorn to be found amongst their final eight fixtures (mcy, WBA, bir, WIG, FUL, bol, WOL, whm). With injuries clearing, Steve Bruce is certainly bullish about his side’s prospects – the return of Lee Cattermole to shield the back four could well be the key factor and should help Sunderland to restore the defensive resolve that has seen them keep those 12 clean sheets.

If you were worried about Sunderland’s defensive prospects over any of their away fixtures, then alternating Mignolet with Newcastle’s Steve Harper is certainly one option that fits snugly. The North East rivals tend to rotate home matches, with the Magpies’ complementing Sunderland’s perfectly over the final eight gameweeks (WOL, WBA MUN, WIG, FUL, BIR, WOL, WBA). While that combination looks strong, many Fantasy Managers will also be assessing a possible partnership with Birmingham’s Ben Foster. This works well in the short-term offering a very decent run in the next five (BOL WBA SUN/che WIG WOL).

Apart from Mignolet’s shot-stopping skills and Sunderland’s strong run of opponents, he is also a budget option at just 3.9 on the FPL game. A price like this can free up funds for other areas of the team that may need a substantial boost in the coming weeks. With an ownership of just 3.6%, Mignolet also has the “differential†potential to fetch you valuable points with the option to double up on the Sunderland defence for their run of three home games in four from gameweek 32.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

i understand his obvious appeal with price and fixtures it's just the whole gordon thing is a bit fishy for me. he was on the bench last week and whilst apparently not fully fit i fear the worst case scenario where they get to the bottom of his problem, he's fully fit and if so is a likely to replace mignolet

I dunno...Bruce has suggested that he won't play Gordon until his problem is solved and Gordon says that he is next seeing the specialist in the middle of April. If Mignolet continues his form, why would he drop him?

The only issue is, like Granville and I discussed in the podcast today, a keeper transfer is sometimes low priority - almost a vanity transfer, unless they've got a double.

if that's mid april visit to the specialist is the case then i guess the gloves are then firmly on mignolets hands. on the whole i've been impressed with him but there were a couple of very dodgy moments against liverpool, but yeah not enough to drop him.

fishy is the wrong word. more like i don't like having another keeper who would normally be number 1 lurking in the background, even if it's a small threat thanks to his ongoing injury. saying that i have with begovic with sorensen lurking around so...

Agreed. He's just about the most defensive full back in the league. It was hideous how virtually the only two goals he's ever scored, coincided with thousands of people transferring him in because he was so cheap. Outrageous luck for those thousands.

It's annoying because I actually wanted him at 4.3, but had far too many other pressing transfers.

Would be nice if Sunderland sorted their defense out again. Bramble and Welbeck could be absolute bargains.

My plan is for Cech, Luiz and Smalling to play most weeks, with Bramble usually filling the 4th spot. Big defensive overhaul for me, not sure if it's worth all the transfers though.

they've had a lot of tough games lately (chelsea, arsenal, liverpool, tottenham, everton and stoke away in the last 6). not too sure about the nothing to play for theory. players are always playing for their spot in the team or to attract bigger clubs

Any latest news/hints/whispers from unnamed insider sources as to Walcott's ability to start this week?

Typically, Wenger seems to under-estimate time needed to recuperate ... the injuries section indicates that he "should be ready" for this week ...

Possibly any bookies with short odds on his start?

Looking for any reason to avoid Fabs/Lampy 🙂

Sturridge, not wait O'Hara...... oooooo it's close. If Wolves get anything (even a point) at SJP you'd expect O'Hara to pick up BPs plus the chance of assist/goal points. Think he just edges it although wouldn't be at all surprised to see Sturridge score against Birmingham. Maybe i'll have him in 'forward thinking' this week...

"Having excelled in his absence, young Simon Mignolet"...played about as well as I would have against Liverpool, comically stopping the ball going out for a goal kick and causing a major goalmouth scramble and later on amateurishly letting in a Suarez shot by diving away from his near post.

    Sir Alex on summer transfers:

“What we are good at is bringing young players to the club, like Chicharito for example (.......) I don’t see why we should change from what we’re good at.

“We will continue [to buy players], without question, and when the opportunity does arrive and we identify the right young players, that’s the way we’ll go.”

Looks like Rodwell and Henderson to solve the midfield issue then 😕

No offence mate but you stomach an awful lot of truly arrogant guff as a Man Utd fan from the likes of Fergie without a murmur, but then saying one of the most important men in football history is arrogant is a bit daft to be honest.

Again, no criticism of the guy as a footballer and an influence on the game, just saying that (like Brian Clough who's one of my favourite football personalities) Cruyff sometimes seems to come across as arrogant.

Besides, Fergie's less arrogant and more angry! 😉

Can you imagine a championship side getting promoted and the following season winning the Premier League, the season after the champions league, the season after that the champions league again? Thats what he achieved, I forgive his arrogance, its justified imo.

          yeah im bringing him in,

altho there is an argument, one im not taking to, that he may be rested in the PL game before the chelsea game to give the back line time to gel ...

          i dunno, food for thought!

which option for double week and rest of season?

    baines > luiz
    young > lampard

    or

    djourou > luiz
    young > nasri

and also that would leave 0.2 in bank
is it likely luiz and lampard will increase by more than that value over the 3 weeks?
