Up until news from the wires broke that Wayne Rooney had been charged by the FA for his foul-mouthed slanging match with an inanimate object, our Captain’s Poll was proving to be one of the most interesting we’d seen all season.

Just a single percentage point separated a three-way race between Frank Lampard, Robin Van Persie and the aforementioned Mr. Rooney before word hit. With the dust settling on this week’s European encounter, the final verdict is in after Rooney appealed the sanction and we’ve officially taken the United striker out of the running…

The heavyweight duo of Frank Lampard (sorry Frank) and Robin Van Persie are almost definitely going to remain at the front of the chase – they’re both on penalties for two of the top sides, whilst also having the benefit of facing two of the lowest ranked teams in the Premier League.

It will be interesting to see if all of those who climbed aboard the Rooney train early will now have a preference between either of these “obvious” candidates, or if his absence will now introduce some risk-taking into the captaincy choice. The gameweeks are whittling away now, with fewer opportunities to recover those mini-league gaps, could it be time to really go for broke with the armband?

Didier Drogba is perhaps the leading candidate in this race (three goals in the same fixture last season is a nice omen) although he is far from guaranteed his starting role after Wednesday night’s exertions and with the looming second-leg at Old Trafford. If you’re a bold soul taking a gamble you certainly have options – Asamoah Gyan at home to West Brom? Darren Bent on a roll versus Newcastle? Nani against Fulham – given Ferguson’s recent shuffling, that’s even a moderate risk now.

Even if your vote previously dropped into the Rooney camp, don’t forget to glide by the frontpage once more and scratch your cross.

JU - I see what your saying about Luiz but is he worth the 4 point hit and do you not think they'l want to play alex and terry at CB as thats what they'l play against Utd?

You know what abbreviation really bakes my noodle? LOL, like use it when you do laugh out loud, but people use it so often even when they are just midly amused or smiling, so I propose MA! instead of LOL, because LOL is so disingenious, "no, you are not laughing out loud, you are smiling, or you found that funny, but you certainly did not laugh out loud I am willing to bet".

Also, the term ROFL, ah, no, you are probably not rolling around the floor laughing, so just LOL, which is the only time I advocate the use of LOL if we can at least stamp out ROFL, that's a step, progress in the battle against stupid abbreviations.

    End of rant. LOL.

Zirkhov had his chance last week, don't think he'll get the nod again, but i could definitely be wrong. Kalou probably the best differential, BUT...huge rotation risk. Safe Bet: Ramires Santos do Nascimento. i think Ancelloti is figuring out which players don't play well with others (see Anelka & Kalou). This is not Basketball, you can't have a rotation that large in playmaking positions without injury woes. Somebody has to get the hot-urine treatment, my bets are on those two.

i had that thought then chose sturridge because he has a better fixture this week and also has the double, is cheaper

Then to make sure i checked his stats and he had 5 shots on target last game, and apparently only keeper stopped him

If Carroll got his ass out of the way their could be goals, also, RBJ also made the astute observation that Carragher on the right may be problematic. And I say balls up the channel give the Greek issues. All of this and the Tevez pace differential leads me to believe that 0-0 is not in the cards.

Its interesting, Nani didn't look great against Chelsea when he came on and he has been rested in two games on the trot now.

I think he will play against Fulham - Fergie doesn't want him losing form.

        +1

Valencia had to get some work in, same with Park. Nani is not out of favor...

      1. Can't go wrong with either. I have Kolarov, and like his chances. But Smalling would be the safer choice.

      2. That sounds solid.

anyone else thinking ancelotti saying he will play his best team simply means he will play what he thinks is his best team for the match, aka not necessarily his best XI and also just doing what any manager does every single game.
    that's what i think

Im guessing Kalou Malouda and Anelka will form a front 3. Are you getting Lampard in?

They are not the best three up front. Kalou and Anelka are all take and no give.

    1) Albrighton > Lampard
    2) VDV > Lampard

Option 2 gives more spare cash for next week and VDV isn't on form and with another 2 weeks transfers could scrape to afford Rooney & Lamps & RVP for the run in.

Had an awful week last and week and pretty stuck on where to go with my team, not sure if my planned moves are decent...

    Plan was
Gomes > Cech (For cheap access to Chelsea returns)
    Someone > Walcott (DGW upcoming)

Sound decent to anyone? Better suggestions?

Diaby will probably end up being a better choice than Theo. He has the futbol IQ of a gerbil.

Maybe Fabs in for Nani, or Nasri in for Barton if you can afford. Cech looks good

just took a risk on anelka, feels quite refreshing not following the herds to bring lampard in when it doesn't suit my side.

Going into the double with terry, luiz and anelka at mo.
