Up until news from the wires broke that Wayne Rooney had been charged by the FA for his foul-mouthed slanging match with an inanimate object, our Captain’s Poll was proving to be one of the most interesting we’d seen all season.

Just a single percentage point separated a three-way race between Frank Lampard, Robin Van Persie and the aforementioned Mr. Rooney before word hit. With the dust settling on this week’s European encounter, the final verdict is in after Rooney appealed the sanction and we’ve officially taken the United striker out of the running…

The heavyweight duo of Frank Lampard (sorry Frank) and Robin Van Persie are almost definitely going to remain at the front of the chase – they’re both on penalties for two of the top sides, whilst also having the benefit of facing two of the lowest ranked teams in the Premier League.

It will be interesting to see if all of those who climbed aboard the Rooney train early will now have a preference between either of these “obvious” candidates, or if his absence will now introduce some risk-taking into the captaincy choice. The gameweeks are whittling away now, with fewer opportunities to recover those mini-league gaps, could it be time to really go for broke with the armband?

Didier Drogba is perhaps the leading candidate in this race (three goals in the same fixture last season is a nice omen) although he is far from guaranteed his starting role after Wednesday night’s exertions and with the looming second-leg at Old Trafford. If you’re a bold soul taking a gamble you certainly have options – Asamoah Gyan at home to West Brom? Darren Bent on a roll versus Newcastle? Nani against Fulham – given Ferguson’s recent shuffling, that’s even a moderate risk now.

Even if your vote previously dropped into the Rooney camp, don’t forget to glide by the frontpage once more and scratch your cross.

I don't have Lampard. I'm getting him next week. Don't think Chelsea are capable of ripping teams for 4 anymore.

To be fair, they have been poor by their standards for about 5-6 months now and they still knocked 4 past Bolton at the Reebok so they are capable.

Know what you mean though, if this fixture was a year ago then I think everybody would be expecting Chelsea to win by at least 3-0.

Almost every team i've seen on here has Lampard. I'm so tempted to get him in this week.

    Foster

    Coleman, Huth, Luiz

    Nasri, Nani, Adam, VDV, Young

    RVP, Berbatov

Worth bringing in Lampard for an 8 point hit?

It's only worth it if Lampard scores 8 more points than any of those midfielders, who all have a chance of big scoring themselves. And while he may have a big game and heavily outdo one of them, then you have to pick the right one, etc etc. Really not worth it.

he's their main man, and their only realistic chance of something this season, and what they want revolves around Tuesday night. If i was Carlo, id wrap him up.

and btw rbj - just to clarify - im completely in agreement with you that signing lampard feels like scraping the barrel when the barrel was only full of dog sh1t in the first place.

He's definitely not worth 12.9 million but i'm signing him on the basis that maybe, with an extra game and easy fixtures, he's almost worth it.

Cant see any other way to maximize value.

a bit of an elaborate post, but it is make or break point of the season for me, with just a 24 point lead to catch. would appreciate your help with the following. i've made up my mind and am going to take a 4 point hit along with using my 2 free transfers. I need to make one of these two decisions.

    A) Young > Lamps, Rooney > Welbeck, Kolarov > A.Cole. and in GW35(or36), i can swap cole for a 6mill defender.

    B) Young > Lamps, Rooney > Gyan, Kolarov > Terry. and in GW35(or36), i can swap terry for a 4.3mill defender.

Thanks a lot. I really need to catch those 24 points.

24 points isn't a lot. Don't go all out. But they seem like good transfers. Both sets of them. In GW35/36, you would of used the other funds probably. Just try and pick the best (C), that alone could bag you 17 extra points. Ok its like saying if I had boobs I'd be a woman, but you get my jist.

all this Lampard love has all the makings of a classic clusterfuk. There have been many like it on this site, when the noise trading goes crazy, and the wheels of a wagon start to buckle under the strain...i've got a nasty feeling Lampard will do diddly squat this week, even if he plays 😀

I don't think that Lamps shows much FPL value outside of his penalty taking.

If he were the only good option in the DGW, then he'd be a must...but there are others, especially ARS.

If not having Lamps lets you have RVP, Nasri, Dempsey etc...then that route might be just as profitable.

I really hope Mancini will smell blood and go for it... Liverpool are easily taken if he goes with an attacking lineup.. won't matter if they concede a few while at it. I'll be majorly disappointed in Mancini if he doesn't and goes with his boring defensive 451. Wouldn't surprise me though, he seems a bit daft when it comes to formations.

'Alex is okay, he is fit,' revealed Ancelotti. 'He doesn't start tomorrow but he will be involved on the bench. So I hope we can give him 30 to 35 minutes just to test his condition.'

Surely this will be Luiz coming off for him? Which would mean an inevetiable 59 minute sub, and then Chelsea get the clean sheet? JamsieP I'm looking at you here... Does Alex play RB ever?

I am leading most of money leagues so I am kindof finished with my defence bar injuries, Carr and Huth sitting on the bench this weekend, both with doubles in the next 2, it's all about goals for survival of some teams at this point, fancy there to be higher scorelines, but have no evidence to back that assertion up! Fun!

I think you have a point in there being a lot more goals in the run-in. Both because of the mid-table teams being safe from relegation and because the relegation teams are forced to attack more, thus being more open at the back.

Luiz is excellent, and has no game for a week + following the game at the weekend, I don't think there is any risk of him being the one to be benched where he can't play on Tuesday, so Terry and Ivan are far more likely to be subbed out for Alex, presume Luiz can play RB too?

LOL - lost in transalation, RBJ! 🙂 For what it's worth, I'm going with Drogba next week, unless things turn out so weird that I can't. For my money, Torres is shot for the moment ...

Are you definitely going to have him next week? If answer yes, do it now for a hit.

Drogba looked so much better than Torres the other night, didn't understand why he was taken off, can't see Drogba rested after coming off early, still hard to know though..

He was rested against Stoke but i suppose that makes him less likely to be rested again.. good chance for him to get his name on the score sheet before a big game aswell

so annoying it's impossible to have a conversation on this forum before it gets lost! In case youre wondering RBJ, I'm with you on the whole lampard debate

Really wish i didn't have to buy him, but don't see another option. This season everyone is terrible

I have a conundrum. It basically amounts to either having:

Silva (liv bla) & Rooney (new EVE)

    or

Lampard -4 (WIG wb BIR WHM) and Albrighton (whm)

I am chasing in my mini league and the guy I'm chasing has none of the above players. I prefer Rooney's form but Lampard has the potential to score 50+ over the 4 games.

What do you guys think? Help much appreciated.

Tough call between Lamps and RVP. But I have gone for RVP just becasue the chance of Lampard getting 2 points seems a lot higher to me than RVP.

i've gone for RVP becuase he's much more likely to score, equally likely to assist and much more likely to get baps.
