Up until news from the wires broke that Wayne Rooney had been charged by the FA for his foul-mouthed slanging match with an inanimate object, our Captain’s Poll was proving to be one of the most interesting we’d seen all season.

Just a single percentage point separated a three-way race between Frank Lampard, Robin Van Persie and the aforementioned Mr. Rooney before word hit. With the dust settling on this week’s European encounter, the final verdict is in after Rooney appealed the sanction and we’ve officially taken the United striker out of the running…

The heavyweight duo of Frank Lampard (sorry Frank) and Robin Van Persie are almost definitely going to remain at the front of the chase – they’re both on penalties for two of the top sides, whilst also having the benefit of facing two of the lowest ranked teams in the Premier League.

It will be interesting to see if all of those who climbed aboard the Rooney train early will now have a preference between either of these “obvious” candidates, or if his absence will now introduce some risk-taking into the captaincy choice. The gameweeks are whittling away now, with fewer opportunities to recover those mini-league gaps, could it be time to really go for broke with the armband?

Didier Drogba is perhaps the leading candidate in this race (three goals in the same fixture last season is a nice omen) although he is far from guaranteed his starting role after Wednesday night’s exertions and with the looming second-leg at Old Trafford. If you’re a bold soul taking a gamble you certainly have options – Asamoah Gyan at home to West Brom? Darren Bent on a roll versus Newcastle? Nani against Fulham – given Ferguson’s recent shuffling, that’s even a moderate risk now.

Even if your vote previously dropped into the Rooney camp, don’t forget to glide by the frontpage once more and scratch your cross.

Andy Leicester won the Premier League. Leicester. Premier League. What is this life? Follow them on Twitter

Right. new page, deserved for this issue. to post again

ultimately, the torres v drogba mindfukl still exists.
    -----------------------------------
torres played 90, so should be rested (but abramovich will see this as a good chance to get him scoring)

Drogba came off early, but seems in better form.

If i had a gun to my head and had to bet all i had in life, id gamble on torres starting….but who the fuk knows

Yep, same dilemma. I was all set to take a chance on Drogba but now I've changed my mind to Torres because of Abram's insisting he plays til he scores a goal. Annoying that Ancelotti didn't mention anything in the press conference.

OK so, if you want them, you want them because of dgw in 33... so your real question is, will torres/ drogba play 3 games in a row?

I'd say no... In which case youre not getting the benefit of the dgw, and these players don't justify their price tags without that benefit.

Think again, how is it madness?

Tevez has one game in the next two weeks, Torres potentially has three and it is a free transfer so what do I have to lose? Madness would be getting rid of Van Persie for him.

Rolling news coverage is one of the main reasons that killers commit crimes- especially in the cases of school shootings. These people are looking for some sort of f*cked up fame and the news agencies are giving it to them.

Ask any psychologist and he would say the same.

I've enjoyed every week of my life that Lolorov hasn't been in my team. The guy is FPL scum of the highest order.

kolorov (scum) to luiz (great player) is the easiest decision to make this week.

Interesting editorial decisions today re Chelsea line up based on this article on chelsea fc. http://www.chelseafc.com/page/LatestNews/0,,10268~2334176,00.html

Chelsea fc and totalfpl take the tone that he will rest key players...despite providing no quotes indicating he will rest key players, in fact he says the opposite and says he will play the strongest side.

Good to see FFS on the tweets going for Ancellotti to play "strongest side" option.

Tut tut, totalfpl and chelseafc. If you are to make an assertion back it up with quotes. And I say that as a journalist with 14 years experience of backing up assertions with quotes.

One negative for those thinking of bringing Torres in - he doesn't score goals for Chelsea. Apart from that he runs about a bit and sometimes get into space but other than that.... 🙂

Surely Luiz will be the full match with not playing in the CL.

I'm thinking I may bring Fat Frank in next week instead and just do Djou > Luiz.

    Foster (Begovic)
    Luiz Coleman Kolarov (Simpson)
VDV Nani Young Bentley(vs old club) Nasri
    RVP(c) Carroll (Rooney)

However, I'm consuming alcohol tonight so there's every chance it could be like a pig's ear come tomorrow morning.

    Thoughts welcome.

Too many strikers fighting for places and too many games. If he was guarenteed to play all it would be sweet, but at the minute too much uncertainty.

My Twit bant with Dom Fifield at the Guardian today re: Luiz

@domfified Alex to start on the bench for #CFC against #WAFC tomorrow, but Carlo hopes to play him for "30 to 45 mins"

    To which I replied:

@domfifield Dom, do you think that will spell Luiz's minutes being cut short?

    To which he replied:

Not necessarily. They could give Terry a rest, I guess, or even switch Luiz to LB - all dependent on the scoreline, I suspect

    I think I agree.

I think the last time Luiz played LB, Porto scored 5 past him, and he was ripped to shreds by Hulk.

just think he's a better captain choice than lampard - blackpool don't even try to defend. Their aim is to beat arsenal 6-5 or something.

Wigan, as poo as they are, will be fighting for a low scoring game... and even if chelsea score a few, lampard isn't the most likely to score by a long way.

when ancelloti says he will be rested take notice...but not before. Ancelloti says he will play his best side. Lampard is part of this best side...that makes him pretty nailed on to start.

not telling...as still in the cup. May go for a leftfield choice, seeing as the guy I'm against has an awesome side that will not be beaten by convention alone.
