An unconvincing 1-0 win over bottom-of-the-table Wigan may well have taken Chelsea to a single point off second-placed Arsenal but Roman Abramovich must, nevertheless, be smarting this evening. That £50m January splurge on the talents of Fernando Torres yet again proved fruitless today, with the Spaniard unable to find the net in a 30 minute appearance at the Bridge.

El Nino’s form is alarming enough on its own but casting an ever-increasing shadow over the whole scenario is a man deemed surplus to requirement and shipped out to Bolton on loan as Chelsea chose to splash the cash: Daniel Sturridge.

In the first 24 gameweeks of the season, Sturridge managed a paltry 160 minutes on the pitch -the culmination of a handful of substitute appearances at the tail end of games- but Owen Coyle’s faith in the youngster’s abilities has been continually rewarded since the Reebok switch.

Today, West Ham were the latest team to suffer at the hands of Sturridge, as a brace in the 3-0 home win brought his tally to a fantastic six goals in eight games for Bolton. Bearing in mind that both Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka have scored just one league goal apiece over the same time span and it’s fair to say that it’s not just Torres who currently suffers by comparison.

Sturridge’s merits were not missed by FFScout this weekend, with both Mark and Big Dunc selecting him for Scout Picks and Spot the Differential respectively. This week‘s Fantasy Flutter on a Sturridge double also came up trumps, much to Mark’s delight, I’ve been informed.

The Trotters’ forthcoming FA Cup semi-final may mean he has no league game next week but being cup-tied allows Sturridge to rest up in anticipation for the following week’s double gameweek, where he’ll surely be drafted in by many a Fantasy Manager. Bolton’s matches from here on in read (blank, ARS & ful, bla, SUN, blp, MCY) and with a few dodgy defences still to take on, Sturridge has the form and fixtures to suggest he’ll continue to put those more illustrious names at his parent club in the shade between now and the end of the season.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I'll actually be really pissed off if Van Persie does nothing tomorrow, Nani often gets overlooked on this site for captaincy but their is no safer option than him at Old Trafford surely?

Shearer embarrassing himself more than usual on MOTD tonight. Claiming that Everton can qualify for Europe now... Yeah, Tottenham are just 9 points ahead of them in 5th, with a game in hand too. 😕

Also praising 'Arry for picking Crouch, when A) Lennon wasn't available, so 4-4-2 was the most sensible option, and B) as they amusingly pointed out, Crouch wasn't tired from Tuesday night.

P.S. Since when is a free kick scored from 20 yards worthy of being goal of the month?

Great quote from Mat Holland on Final Score tonight. Something like:

I've said it before and I'll say it again, a Steve Bruce team always implodes sooner or later. They had that great run but it was always a matter of time before they fell to an average position. Because that's what he is as a manager - average.

Personally, after the CL game last week, even a disjointed Chelsea with a bland Lampard looked set to dismantle a dismal Wigan. I figured that Franky just *had* to be in the points, so overlooked VanPoopsie and Nani.

      Awe-inspiring logic and insight. 🙂

Well this backing of Sunderlands good fixtures looks worrying, infact this gameweek has only further added worries. Will the Chelsea double be a let down??

I'm even considering Kenywne Jones after he looked he really good on match of the day 2 tonight, could be a good option for the doulbe..

Everton look to be the value option for players right now with form in thier favour.

"I think it would be good for him to get away," Schmechel told Ekstra Bladet.

"It would be good for him to play for an other club. Real Madrid under Mourinho, is someone that could handle him and get the best out of him.

"It is painful to say that that the best player you have, which he is at United, he is better off trying something new.

Reckon you're right Bent will score more points till end of season...i would have thought even without a game on Sat Rooney will still score more than RVP given the difference in player and teams form. So Bent and Roon till end of season then, possibly losing Young or VDV on the way!

I have to say; hats off to good old Auntie Beeb. The Masters coverage is just wonderful, wonderful. Peter and Ken are an amazing double act in commentary, ably backed up by Hazel.
I've been watching Augusta for over 20 years and the beauty of the course never ceases to amaze me, regardless of the politically incorrect origins of the place.

    People who gamble:

I win £92.50 if Rory McIlRoy wins the Masters and get back my £20 of tournament betting if he finishes in the top 5.

What could/should I do to optimise profit etc blah.

Robben didn't get it going again until he went to Bayern Munich several years later. He was up and down at Real Madrid. Chelsea only bought Robben and Duff to stop ManU from buying them. Yes, Chelses did derail Robben'career, temporarily.

Robben was good in the beginning and I had him in my FPL team as he was the third highest midfielder in fantasy points. It was after when he was languished to the bench after Chelski brought in more players.

He was brilliant in his first two seasons, then was hit by injury in his third.

To say Robben's career was derailed by Chelsea is utterly ridiculous. His stock rose dramatically between him moving there from PSV and him leaving for Real Madrid.

Crespo didn't like London, and his head was in Italy the entire time. A player like him needs regular starts and he didn't get them at Chelski with other top players vying for playing time.

Regarding Torres, he was most effective in a 4-5-1 at Liverpool with Gerrard playing a free role behind him. Chelski, so far, has employed him in a 4-4-2 formation.

that's not derailing his career though, is it?

What Fernando Torres needs is a good pre-season under his belt. It's also silly to suggest he can't play in a 4-4-2. I'd wager he played in that formation for Athletico Madrid, and has often played that way at international level alongside David Villa.

Crespo wasn't the same scoring machine he wa before he went to Chelski. He had his moments, but the consistency was gone after he went to AC Milan.

He played in a 4-4-2 with Spain during the World Cup last summer but was dropped to the bench due to what the Spain manager dubbed ineffectiveness, and they went to a 4-5-1 formation afterward with Villa up front getting Spain the needed goals.

actually, they played 4-5-1 all the way through, with Villa wide left.

In Euro 2008, Spain played 4-4-2.

        wanna know what abramovich did?

this actually happened and i don't care if it sounds nerdy or fantastical but this is why abramovich didn't declare his yacht when people tried to count his wealth

-- ok, imagine you have £10bn business and you want to spend some of it, say £1bn. you can either sell your shares and sell one tenth of your company, or you can get a lon and use the business as collatoral. so he got a 'loan' from the russian stock market of £1bn and they thought he would make them money from oil or something so he bought 3 private jets and a yacht.

oh yeah and he wanted his money back from chelsea but he wrote of the debt in the end
