As these words at typed Heurelho Gomes has just stuck out a telescopic arm to palm away Charlie Adam’s angled drive. Tottenham’s clean sheet preserved – for now.

If Spurs can keep Ian Holloway’s Seaside cavaliers at bay they’ll earn Fantasy investors in Gomes and Michael Dawson something rather special. A clean sheet, on day in which ten sides failed to deliver a single defensive gain, would be a precious commodity; a glittering prize for those who gobbled up Tottenham’s double gameweek bait.

We’ve rattled on for weeks on how defensive investment is being shaped by the potential of attacking returns. It’s the reason why the likes of Gary Cahill and Aleksandar Kolarov find their way in the Scout Picks; it’s even led to the endorsement of a Wolves defender. Things really are that bad.

Today saw both Cahill and Kolarov do little to justify the hype we’ve lavished on them. However, the fact remains that these defenders do offer attacking potential – they do have efforts on goal, they do provide creativity from open play and set-pieces. While they, along with every other defender today, returned zero points from their defensive efforts – they did at least get closer than most to rectifying things at the opposite end.

None of us can be comfortable with the situation – I for one hanker for the days when selecting a Chelsea, United and Liverpool defender took care of matters. The days when John Terry, Rio Nemanja Vidic and Jamie Carragher justified the outlay and left us to ponder tinkering our attacking assets. If today’s script is anything to go by, United and Chelsea will remind us again that those days are long gone when they collide at Old Trafford tomorrow.

This season we could almost taste the excitement generated by an out-of-position prospect – we’ve even seen the unproven talents of Seamus Coleman and Elmohamady create bandwagons of some significance. It’s a worrying trend, as Fantasy Managers are forced to hunt down goals and assists from dubious sources. A dirty business for dirty times.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

It's my 26 points with Suarez, Djourou and Modric to play versus his 19 with Gomez, Odemwingie, Clichy, Luiz, Terry, and Dempsey to play. It might end my 4 game win streak in my h2h league :/
Just have to hope Odemwingie doesn't score, as he's been a bastard ever since I sold him with racking up the points, so he probably will.

(both got RVP, VDV(c), Silva and Kuyt)

I used to hate on him incessantly, now I hold my fire for Gareth Barry. Milner the "working wing" is aiight, he can't be blamed for fetching that unreal price for himself. He's what I like to call a winner, I'm sure you could break those stats down even further into who he plays with, that would drastically change the outcome.

He's more fantasy rubbish than actual football rubbish. He's a dynamic thinker with a football IQ. Was that the right foot or the left that deftly touched that ball over the defense to Silva on the left, who served fat face Viera a lay-up...only to see him blow it? The kid (Milner) doesn't give the ball away, he plays hard, and is a professional. I have no idea what his 40 meter time is but I've never seen him get laced. I would have to respectfully disagree he is presently "poor". 6-8 weeks ago I was right there with you though. Give the kid some credit.

Is this 4th position a formality?!

    Man City 62pts
    Tottenham 56pts
    Liverpool 55pts

Liverpool win Monday, Spurs win against City:

    Man City 62pts
    Tottenham 59pts

Liverpool beat Spurs, City draw with Stoke:

    Man City 63pts
    Liverpool 61pts
    Tottenham 59pts

City lose at Bolton, Liverpool win at Villa, Spurs, who cares!

I honestly think Spurs will win at City, the Stoke after the cup final could be a low scoring non-entity of a game, and Bolton are (bar today) very strong at home. The most likely thing tho is that we won't win our last 3!

No idea where they're based, just know that they are in appalling form and are already down. Watched some of the first half and Bayern were ripping them to shreds.

To be honest, Sevilla weren't any better. Negredo scored two good goals, but other than that they were completely devoid of inspiration. Probably didn't help not having Navas or Rakitic, but Real were so much better than them.

I know! On my bloody bench...

To be fair Modric did play well today, as usual, and was certainly much better than VDV. But playing well in real life doesn't always translate into FPL points. The bonus goes some way to correcting that, but the total points tallies of Modric and VDV will attest to that.

In all fairness, I don't think their was many options for captaincy this week. VdV was the only stand out choice for many so I thought it was a week where I can gamble and if it goes wrong it won't hurt me too much, so just went with Modric and it is looking ok at the moment.

He is also quite a safe choice with the bonus, and if they get a result at Eastlands midweek he should get some again!

I did chic out on Defoe, but you're right the options were low. Did get a chance to see the match, what was up with the BLP high-line that was supposed to be suspect? I expected more goals, Evatt...2nd week in a row he's flipped me the bird from the bench...

There is some truth in that but he was certainly better in the early part of the season. His bonus points (i know i know, not exactly the best tool to judge performance!) alone show that. 16 before Christmas and 3 since

The judges love goals though. I know you can't really argue with goals, but a lot of his goals in the early part of the season were penalties/close range goals after good work from Crouch.

His performances have definitely tailed off, but his initial performances were nowhere near as good as people liked to make out.

I just think he was much more sharper in the first half of the season and more hungrier to get forward into the box.

Whenever I have seen him lately, he has looked very lazy, don't know whether he is just feeling it towards the end of the season maybe because of his injuries. Not sure but Modric actually got forward more today, which says alot!

Negative points for own goals is ridiculous, especially considering how the majority are freak events where the player can't do anything to avoid it.

I do think that, if negative points are to be awarded for penalties, it should only be the case if the penalty is scored. The player fouled doesn't get an assist for a missed penalty.

imo missed penalties should be -4. 5 for a penalty save and 4/5/6 for a scored penalty yet only -2 for a missed pen isn't right imo. they're such a cheap source of points that it would be good if the cost of missing was greater, as kit it's almost just like a yellow card, annoying but pretty minor

Hmmm, the point swing involved in a penalty miss is pretty massive though. 7 points (before Carlos Tevez style BPs for scoring a penalty) difference between scoring and missing. And when it's your captain......

Under your silly rules, I'd have missed out on 40 (!) points when Bent (c) missed two penalties against Spurs last season.

Guess you must just be a kid if you are asking that question anyway in fairness.

And yeah, Camel Club is alright like...

Only 5 defender got more than 2 points today (of which 2 play for the lambs to the slaughter Blackpool!)...

    Distin 11
    Taylor S 8
    Evatt 5
    Samba 5
    Baptiste 3

Of the 2.6% of people who own Distin I wonder how many had him on the bench??!!

I really fancy Chelsea to nick a result tomorrow. (Or today) And Liverpool to beat Fulham comfortably. I know that seems strange seeing as it's at the cottage. What do people reckon?

Very late guys. With only 2 GWs left.
Transfer policy; Get rid of a defender I really want to shift (Coleman, yes you) or concentrate on mid/att??

If you can survive with 3 decent defenders each week then mid/att is more important.

      How are we looking here.

Bergovic, Terry, Kuyt, Modric, Yaya, Zamora, Drogba
      Huth, Lampard, Silva, Rooney, Odemwingie

7 plays 5 but I can't help but think that with the games we have the 5 are in a better position. What do you think?

Damn. Mine are the 5. 5 is actually 6 cos I forgot VDV.

Thinking Rooney, Lampard and Odemwingie could all get goals so holding out that my 6 is better than his 7.

How about Tevez as your striker? should be fit now.

great knee jerk Mark. Was thinking just the other day about the good old days of liverpool, chelsea & utd defenders. Could leave them there all season and rake in the clean sheets.

You might make up another 13 at best by the end of gameweek. making up the 40 with 20 games left will be the hard part.
