A brilliant Manchester derby in this afternoon’s Community Shield has set the tone for the upcoming season. Roberto Mancini’s side raced ahead in the first forty-five, heading into the interval two-up thanks to a Joleon Lescott header and a speculative long distance strike from Edin Dzeko that seemed to swerve as it flew past David De Gea. At the interval, City, with such a rock-solid defence, looked nailed-on to pick up the silverware, despite their opponent’s dominance in possession.

After the break, the “noisy neighbours†were soon silenced. Goals from Chris Smalling and Nani -following a brilliant passing team move- levelled matters just short of the hour mark as United’s attacking football proved relentless. With only seconds remaining, Nani sped away from the halfway line and capped a wonderful comeback by rounding Joe Hart to coolly slot home the winner.

In Fantasy terms, the game will no doubt spark a Nani bandwagon. The summer purchase of Ashley Young places question mark over the Portuguese winger’s game time in 2011/12 but there seems little doubt that Nani- last season’s top-scoring FPL- player- looks good for a place in United’s starting XI at West Brom next Sunday.

On the left, Ashley Young also looked the part and it’s worth noting he took his fair share of set-pieces; it was his delivery that led to Smalling grabbing United’s first. Young -like Nani- is priced at 10.0 but with Antonio Valencia not yet match fit, is likely to take his good form to the Hawthorns in gameweek 1.

Despite Javier Hernandez being sidelined with concussion, Sir Alex Ferguson opted for Danny Welbeck as a strike partner for Wayne Rooney up front. His performances in tandem with the Mexican have shown Rooney thrives more with a pacy forward ahead of him, and Dimitar Berbatov was resultantly relegated to the bench. If Fergie continues along this line of thinking, the Bulgarian could well be a peripheral figure in 2011/12.

Chris Smalling started the game at right-back, suggesting he may offer cover in positions other than centre-half next season. Phil Jones was also played at right-back in United’s pre-season win over MLS Allstars, suggesting the likes of Rafael will have plenty competition for starts on the flank in 2011/12.

For City, Joleon Lescott carried on the goalscoring form that saw him score two games in his club’s final three league games last season. At 6.5, he’s 0.5 more than Vincent Kompany but his eye for goal may tempt Fantasy managers, particularly with Kolo Toure still serving a suspension.

Given their record of 18 clean sheets last term, City were surprisingly slack in the second half . Gael Clichy, on as a sub for Aleksander Kolarov, hardly covered himself in glory with an indecisiveness on the halfway line that led to United’s winner.

David Silva was the liveliest of City’s attacking players, always buzzing around and looking to pick up possession. Silva’s set-piece led to City’s opener and with a home game against Swansea the final match of game week 1, the Spaniard – priced at 9.5 in FPL- will surely see plenty Fantasy investment.

With so much uncertainty surrounding the availability of Carlos Tevez and with Sergio Aguero sitting out the match due to blistered feet, Fantasy managers were hoping for an impressive performance from the other City forwards on show. Mario Balotelli was never really in the game and priced at 9.0, would be a huge punt ahead of the game against Brendan Rodgers promoted side.

Edin Dzeko, playing as the lone forward, may have found the net but the goal was perhaps more of an error by David De Gea than a piece of clinical finishing. Dzeko, at 8.5, could see plenty investment if Roberto Mancini is unable to call upon the services of either Tevez or Aguero ahead of the game a week on Monday.

A stat more indicative of the nature of this game is each side’s total shots- United had 21 to City’s 8, a fairer reflection of the state of play, rather than the 3-2 scoreline.

robbo and mignolet don't rotate too well...
bolton's fixtures are very tough from the start so if cahill stays with them he is not worth it...
luiz haven't played yet for chelsea in pre season after copa and he is a rotation risk and hangeland is overpriced...u can get hughes for 1.5 less if u want fulham defensive cover...
vaughan is not guranteed to start at sunderland and him n wilshere are not a good fpl prospect imo...
and wait for the suarez and aguero news before the deadline as both of them have not played after copa america and could be rested for the 1st game!

    I have an idea....

When you want a RMT please also state your finishing position from last season. For example for me it would be...

    Please RMT 74,000 (ish)

Given I was pretty average last season you might want to ignore my team, whereas if I was a top 10k player then you might want to take note.

I reckon most RMTs at the moment are from dullards who finsihed in place 1,254,763 or below.

    Good idea?

I think every person here deserves a fair chance at a RMT, and it shouldn't matter how you did in previous seasons.

I certainly don't take into account who the player is before rating a team. If someone's looking for advice in an honest manner, I'll be glad to give some.

    Cant decide between these two:
A- Yaya Toure + Lamps ...would offer certain starters + Fat Frank on pens

B- Silva + Malouda ...the riskier one, but definitely more attacking minded players.

Both would cost me 20 M. Any suggestions welcomed. Thx

B...I dont see it being risky tbh i think both silva and malouda are starters no reason to think otherwise. Lamps could be playing a deeper role so penos would be all he has...think yaya over preformed last year

Personally, I am backing Nani at the start of the season while valencia out and will rotate into VDV or Malouda if needed. top scorer last season despite the rotation - also think he is fairly fixture proof.

This is my 3rd season on FPL - the first 2 seasons I didn't plan my team at all and was a idiot with transfers and rotation. This season I am determined to do well. I put this in here because I want you all to know that I am a keen amateur looking for seasoned pros to tell me I'm wrong. I have learnt an awful lot from just reading what I can of the comments.

In response to a query on the previous thread, I think that Per Mertesacker would be a very poor signing for Arsenal. To be fair, after returning from a long-term heel injury this month, he looked very good indeed in Werder's 1-0 win against Everton last week and in Werder's 2-1 home victory against Hoffenheim on Saturday.

But there's a reason why Werder Bremen are such a fun team to watch in the Bundesliga and European club competitions - they have to attack such a lot because they defend so ineptly. At international level, Mertesacker can get away with his poor distribution and complete lack of pace (he has the turning circle of a distressed oil tanker) because his high-quality team-mates can bail him out. But he can't get away with at SV Werder, especially last season even before his injury, and he wouldn't be able to at Arsenal either. He gets exposed when nippy forwards run at him at pace and has poor positional sense, especially when playing a high defensive line.

There's little doubt that Bremen would be happy to sell Mertesacker to Arsenal if the price is right. Failure to qualify for international competition last season has left them with real financial problems and a sensible offer for their three major assets (Mertesacker, winger Marko Marin & goalkeeper Tim Wiese) would be accepted. With only one year to go on his contract (June 2012), and comparatively high wages, Mertesacker remains the most likely option of the three.

And although Mertesacker has just been given the captain's armband at Werder, he pointedly refused to rule out a move to England in yesterday's post-match interview. He cited Werder's poor finances as the potential trigger for a move away from the Weserstadion, but in truth, Mertesacker has never made any secret of his desire to play in the Premier League.

Despite recent reports in the British press, however, sources in Germany suggest that Arsenal have not followed up on the interest that they expressed in Mertesacker some months back.

Very enlightening, thanks. Guess it does make more sense if the Gunners sign a center back with premier league experience like Jags, Samba, or Cahill. Though I wouldn't mind if Mertesacker was bought in addition to one them, as a purported price of 6 million does not seem to be much, and it would add some much needed depth to the backline. Highly unlikely that this would happen however.

Great central defender, with a lot of potential, moreover French, is Mamadou Sakho from PSG. For Arsenal he´d be ideal. Ah and please Wenger, get Hugo Lloris from Lyon!... So frustrating to be an Arsenal fan last years 🙂
