A brilliant Manchester derby in this afternoon’s Community Shield has set the tone for the upcoming season. Roberto Mancini’s side raced ahead in the first forty-five, heading into the interval two-up thanks to a Joleon Lescott header and a speculative long distance strike from Edin Dzeko that seemed to swerve as it flew past David De Gea. At the interval, City, with such a rock-solid defence, looked nailed-on to pick up the silverware, despite their opponent’s dominance in possession.

After the break, the “noisy neighbours†were soon silenced. Goals from Chris Smalling and Nani -following a brilliant passing team move- levelled matters just short of the hour mark as United’s attacking football proved relentless. With only seconds remaining, Nani sped away from the halfway line and capped a wonderful comeback by rounding Joe Hart to coolly slot home the winner.

In Fantasy terms, the game will no doubt spark a Nani bandwagon. The summer purchase of Ashley Young places question mark over the Portuguese winger’s game time in 2011/12 but there seems little doubt that Nani- last season’s top-scoring FPL- player- looks good for a place in United’s starting XI at West Brom next Sunday.

On the left, Ashley Young also looked the part and it’s worth noting he took his fair share of set-pieces; it was his delivery that led to Smalling grabbing United’s first. Young -like Nani- is priced at 10.0 but with Antonio Valencia not yet match fit, is likely to take his good form to the Hawthorns in gameweek 1.

Despite Javier Hernandez being sidelined with concussion, Sir Alex Ferguson opted for Danny Welbeck as a strike partner for Wayne Rooney up front. His performances in tandem with the Mexican have shown Rooney thrives more with a pacy forward ahead of him, and Dimitar Berbatov was resultantly relegated to the bench. If Fergie continues along this line of thinking, the Bulgarian could well be a peripheral figure in 2011/12.

Chris Smalling started the game at right-back, suggesting he may offer cover in positions other than centre-half next season. Phil Jones was also played at right-back in United’s pre-season win over MLS Allstars, suggesting the likes of Rafael will have plenty competition for starts on the flank in 2011/12.

For City, Joleon Lescott carried on the goalscoring form that saw him score two games in his club’s final three league games last season. At 6.5, he’s 0.5 more than Vincent Kompany but his eye for goal may tempt Fantasy managers, particularly with Kolo Toure still serving a suspension.

Given their record of 18 clean sheets last term, City were surprisingly slack in the second half . Gael Clichy, on as a sub for Aleksander Kolarov, hardly covered himself in glory with an indecisiveness on the halfway line that led to United’s winner.

David Silva was the liveliest of City’s attacking players, always buzzing around and looking to pick up possession. Silva’s set-piece led to City’s opener and with a home game against Swansea the final match of game week 1, the Spaniard – priced at 9.5 in FPL- will surely see plenty Fantasy investment.

With so much uncertainty surrounding the availability of Carlos Tevez and with Sergio Aguero sitting out the match due to blistered feet, Fantasy managers were hoping for an impressive performance from the other City forwards on show. Mario Balotelli was never really in the game and priced at 9.0, would be a huge punt ahead of the game against Brendan Rodgers promoted side.

Edin Dzeko, playing as the lone forward, may have found the net but the goal was perhaps more of an error by David De Gea than a piece of clinical finishing. Dzeko, at 8.5, could see plenty investment if Roberto Mancini is unable to call upon the services of either Tevez or Aguero ahead of the game a week on Monday.

A stat more indicative of the nature of this game is each side’s total shots- United had 21 to City’s 8, a fairer reflection of the state of play, rather than the 3-2 scoreline.

      Looks decent.

I think you should have a 12.0 striker (RVP, Rooney, Torres, Aguero, Tevez) slot available at all times.

      Downgrade downing and upgrade Carroll.

      Where's the dot? 😛

Yeah i thought Ando was excellent today, but he's a bit like Modric, assisting the assist, playing deep. Figured even without Sneijder there's still a butt load of rotation in that midfield too: Carrick, Fletcher, Ando, Cleverley, Giggs.

Also, Moses scoring vs Villareal ruining my theory he only does well vs sh*t teams. So yeah, i'm all aboard. Can't wait to ditch it in the gw 2 wildcard though!

It's hard to ignore Rooney GW1 with question marks over all his peers, you can always get him out for someone else GW2.

I wouldn't want to be going into GW1 with my flagship player a doubt.

      Ok let's talk GK's!
I have de Gea and Al Habsi.
de Gea has a good line in front of him, but messed up today. I personally think he will do ok throughout the season. Who matches up well with de Gea?
The Given Hype!? I like Given, he is very talented but is his defense good enough to stop some shots?
Let me hear your thoughts boys.

I think you should have a total rethink.

            Smalling probably won't start.
Nani & Kalou are rotation risks (Nani less so on today's performance).
            Where are your captains?

How much are people spending on goalkeepers/defenders/midfielders/strikers?
Here is a breakdown on my investment:

        Goalkeepers: 9.5m
        Defenders: 27m
        Midfielders: 34.5m
        Strikers: 29m

Take 2: How much are people spending on goalkeepers/defenders/midfielders/strikers?
Here is a breakdown on my investment:

      Goalkeepers: 9.5m
      Defenders: 27m
      Midfielders: 34.5m
      Strikers: 29m

I’m not sure if i’ve spent enough on my midfielders or not..

hey fellow ff plyrs. Any advice positive or negative would be appreciated with the following:

given ruddy - not worried here.
a.cole kompany hughes simpson orr -

concerns over kompany - just not confident about him. simpson and orr- any better options of bums?

nani malouda nzog moses dyer -

i know there are big concerns over nani as a rotation risk. But there is just no way he is not starting the first. My love for nani however cud get me in trouble. malouda..unsure..jus prefer to lamps as chelsea mid cover. same concern over bums - better options for moses and dyer?

rooney suarez holt - again i know concerns over suarez starting but I am confident he will. Holt?? aj a better option?

      appreciate all thoughts. cheers

AJ has decent fixtures and has been starting/scoring regularly in Europa qualifiers.
However, for 5.5m, I fancy DJ Campbell - unlike Holt, he has Premiership experience and also has some attractive early fixtures.

Alright, it's another dirty re-shuffle. Let me have it.

      Given (Ruddy)

      Bent Suarez (Holt)

Wilshere has an ankle knock and Luiz has apparently done 45 minutes of training since the Copa America because of his knee - Alex more likely to partner Terry.
Though injury-free, Suarez only just returned to training too, so bit of a selection risk - can you stretch to Carroll instead?
Bent and N'Zogbia good choices, but presumably you want them to score against Fulham in GW1, so having Hughes in defence is a little counter-productive.

Doubling up in defence - even with a top 4 side - is always risky ... and expensive. Do you have ANY faith in Gabbidon or Caulker if called upon?
Good to see DJ on the bench though - much prefer him to Holt or Graham. He's got the experience and Warnock will get the best out of him. Once bitten, twice shy after taking punts on Ebanks-Blake in '09 and Boselli in '10 ... the horror!

      The Mega Captaincy Team.

Based around the pretty obvious idea that a big hitter from each of Man Utd, Chelsea, Man City and Arsenal is necessary to ensure the best captaincy choice each week. Although initially I wanted three big strikers the questionable role of Tevez/Aguero & Torres/Drogba has made a midfielder from Citeh and Chelsea a safer bet.

Also you may notice I have rather mentally tripled up on Villa defence, well that might not stay. But I do feel that McLeish will strengthen them defensively and I'd like to capitalise on their pretty nice early fixtures. One will then be changed for the likes of Enrique (turncoat) if he does join Liverpool

      Given, Al-Habsi
Warnock, Dunne, Bramble, Simpson, De Laet
      Silva, Lampard, Sessegnon, Moses, Marveaux
      RVP, Rooney, Johnson.

Might change the likes of Sessegnon, Marveaux, Johnson, this just gives a broad outline of a possible strategy. Thoughts?

So RVP and Rooney eh? I don't think i'll be starting off with both. Nani and RVP i reckon for me.

          Given Ruddy
Kompany Alcaraz Gabbidon De Laet Taylor
          Sessegnon Moses
          AJ

Yes the defence is awful but I will always play Kompany and the other 4 rotate perfectly early door so a bit of a gamble but may work...

      any chance of a RMT?

      Kenny

      Kompany Terry Richards

      Moses Lampard Ramsey Taraabt

      Rooney Drogba

      subs

Not seeing much love for Kenny on here, any particular reason for that?

also has Wilkinson lost his place to woodgate?

Is Toure pretty much definitely gonna replace Lescott when he's back?
