A brilliant Manchester derby in this afternoon’s Community Shield has set the tone for the upcoming season. Roberto Mancini’s side raced ahead in the first forty-five, heading into the interval two-up thanks to a Joleon Lescott header and a speculative long distance strike from Edin Dzeko that seemed to swerve as it flew past David De Gea. At the interval, City, with such a rock-solid defence, looked nailed-on to pick up the silverware, despite their opponent’s dominance in possession.

After the break, the “noisy neighbours” were soon silenced. Goals from Chris Smalling and Nani -following a brilliant passing team move- levelled matters just short of the hour mark as United’s attacking football proved relentless. With only seconds remaining, Nani sped away from the halfway line and capped a wonderful comeback by rounding Joe Hart to coolly slot home the winner.

In Fantasy terms, the game will no doubt spark a Nani bandwagon. The summer purchase of Ashley Young places question mark over the Portuguese winger’s game time in 2011/12 but there seems little doubt that Nani- last season’s top-scoring FPL- player- looks good for a place in United’s starting XI at West Brom next Sunday.

On the left, Ashley Young also looked the part and it’s worth noting he took his fair share of set-pieces; it was his delivery that led to Smalling grabbing United’s first. Young -like Nani- is priced at 10.0 but with Antonio Valencia not yet match fit, is likely to take his good form to the Hawthorns in gameweek 1.

Despite Javier Hernandez being sidelined with concussion, Sir Alex Ferguson opted for Danny Welbeck as a strike partner for Wayne Rooney up front. His performances in tandem with the Mexican have shown Rooney thrives more with a pacy forward ahead of him, and Dimitar Berbatov was resultantly relegated to the bench. If Fergie continues along this line of thinking, the Bulgarian could well be a peripheral figure in 2011/12.

Chris Smalling started the game at right-back, suggesting he may offer cover in positions other than centre-half next season. Phil Jones was also played at right-back in United’s pre-season win over MLS Allstars, suggesting the likes of Rafael will have plenty competition for starts on the flank in 2011/12.

For City, Joleon Lescott carried on the goalscoring form that saw him score two games in his club’s final three league games last season. At 6.5, he’s 0.5 more than Vincent Kompany but his eye for goal may tempt Fantasy managers, particularly with Kolo Toure still serving a suspension.

Given their record of 18 clean sheets last term, City were surprisingly slack in the second half . Gael Clichy, on as a sub for Aleksander Kolarov, hardly covered himself in glory with an indecisiveness on the halfway line that led to United’s winner.

David Silva was the liveliest of City’s attacking players, always buzzing around and looking to pick up possession. Silva’s set-piece led to City’s opener and with a home game against Swansea the final match of game week 1, the Spaniard – priced at 9.5 in FPL- will surely see plenty Fantasy investment.

With so much uncertainty surrounding the availability of Carlos Tevez and with Sergio Aguero sitting out the match due to blistered feet, Fantasy managers were hoping for an impressive performance from the other City forwards on show. Mario Balotelli was never really in the game and priced at 9.0, would be a huge punt ahead of the game against Brendan Rodgers promoted side.

Edin Dzeko, playing as the lone forward, may have found the net but the goal was perhaps more of an error by David De Gea than a piece of clinical finishing. Dzeko, at 8.5, could see plenty investment if Roberto Mancini is unable to call upon the services of either Tevez or Aguero ahead of the game a week on Monday.

A stat more indicative of the nature of this game is each side’s total shots- United had 21 to City’s 8, a fairer reflection of the state of play, rather than the 3-2 scoreline.

    Double Villa at the back?

    Great midfield.

Aguero and Suarez both might miss GW1.

Check out Kenny for QPR and how he rotates with Given.

He's .5 more than Ruddy, and I think that's the determinant in the decision.

Given-Kenny looks pretty good, but I'll most likely have Orr/Gabbidon as one of my 4m defenders...not keen on the prospect of doubling up on QPR defenders. AND I'll probably have DJ Campbell too, and 3 from any promoted side ain't good. I'm wondering about finding 0.5m for Given-Schwarzer... that looks pretty nice.

Most people take 'rotate' as one keeper plays at home while the other is away.... I think impossible to pick a keeper combination that always had one keeper playing at home to a poor opposition...

So after tinkering with my team for the 101st time this preseason I am faced with the following choice:

    1) Rooney/RVP and a 4.5mil defender

    2) Torres and a 5.5 mil defender

    3) Bent and a 6.5 mil defender

    4) Other

Other defenders are Kompany, Terry, De Laet, Orr
Other Forwards are Carroll and DJ.

Anyone have any ideas on the best option for the start of the season?

      1)

Rooney and, say, Alcaraz. Rooney has easy fixtures and the team looks to be scoring for fun. Alcaraz plays the three promoted teams weeks 1-3. If Rooney flops/when fixtures stiffen for him, you can always trade to any other forward (because Roon's so expensive).

Dropped back into mid, as he does. But I figure he's in good form, rested, United will score goals and win, and he has some of the best 'feeders' in the Prem (little biased, but still).

Right now RVP might be injured, and if not, so much is 'in flux' with Arse, I'm bullish until I see how it works out.

    Anybody thinking about this?

Mignolet and Gordon shared the goalkeeping last year. Gordon's got a bad injury. Their combined point score is 139. Not too bad at all really.

With Gordon injured and Sunderland's defense improved, is anybody onsidering Mignolet as one of their cheap rotation goalkeepers. I'm considering Him and Paddy Kenny to rotate.

Went to all those places end of last year... didn't exactly stay in what you'd call "nice" hotels though. Bangkok is a laugh, but you don't need much time there... Phuket is OK but a bit (sex)touristy. Phi Phi is a party island, good fun, but it got pretty done over in the Tsunami and hasn't been rebuilt entirely. Apparently there are some very nice places on Phi Phi but we stayed in a bit of a hole, so check tripadvisor etc before you book anything.

I didn't make it there myself, but I've been told Koh Lanta is pretty nice- bit more chilled out. Depends what you're after though. Anyway, I had a blast everywhere in Thailand, you'll love it wherever you go.

Cheers guys. Yeah I was there in 2001... Actually its where I met my friends who are getting married.

They are going back to Phi Phi, where they were on holiday. I met them diving.

I was single then, and stayed in some real cheap places for about 2 pound a night *lol*

Phi Phi was stunning pre Tsunami, and I'm dissapointed to hear thats its not recovered that well. But I always wanted to go back, even if it was to just support the island with a few tourist $'s after what they went through.

Dribbler what were the 3 hotels? I've been on TripAdvisor, almost as hard to select a hotel as picking my team 🙂

I guess they are all good so should just pick one.

In Phuket I'll be looking at Kata somewhere.

Phi Phi I've heard to now stay away from the places near the pier as its too noisy.

Took a overnight train trip from Bangkok to Chaing Mai. Let's just say that's not something I will ever do again! We did the "temple thing" while there.

For 8 mil you can get a defender who will score like a midfielder. It is worth it as long as it does not upset your team balance. Furthermore, be preapred to take a value hit early in the season as the masses will desert him if he doesn't prouduce week 1 or 2.

Personally I am not getting him to start but if I was having him it would be for the season unless he got injured.

      Hope this is useful.

Try to decide between Malouda and Nani as getting both would mean downsizing too many other players.
I figure Malouda has the edge. Both have had good pre-season form, both look assured of a place.

In the opening 6 matches Nani's 3 home games are Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea and as most are aware, Nani scored the vast majority of his points at home, but these matches will likely see limited returns for any attackers, barring Arsenal possibly. His easier matches are away, and his away points hauls were usually fairly rubbish last season often scoring 2s and 3s. Nani also looks to have lost direct free kicks to Ashley Young.
Malouda on the other hand should be safely guaranteed a place on the left and takes corners. Looking at the fixtures it seems that an attacking Chelsea player is vital for GW2 and 3 with not many other obvious options for captaincy, whereas there'll be much better opportunities to invest in Nani further into the season.

So Malouda it is.. what do ye think? (and please don't say buy both followed up by a LOL)

Conservative move is probably Malouda to start with a possible shift to Nani, if he continues to play reliably and well, when his fixtures ease up.

I'm thinking Nani, only because I can see him as my (c) more than Malouda - but that's a personal thing.

      buy both LOL

But seriously I've gone for Malouda with Rooney up top for Man U coverage. Tried to fit them both in earlier today, but too worried about when Valencia comes back. It may not be for a few GWs, but Park is also a threat since he is known to play in the 'big' games. With Young rotating as well on the other flank, who knows if SAF will consider Spurs, Arsenal, and Chelsea 'big' enough games to play Park and sit Nani.

      just my two cents

        Carroll & O'Hara -> Nani & Doyle

That badly disrupts balance. You're changing a 12.0 striker slot into a 10.0 then you're downgrading a flexible 6.0 position to a risky 5.0 with few alternatives. It's not worth it in my book.

plus when you say changing 12 striker to 10, it makes it sound like suarez is a much worst pick than rooney. and that might be true, but at 9.5, i think suarez is much better value (and actually think he'll do better than rooney anyways). just my opinion

With this new bonus system taking into consideration tackling and pass percentages etc. Surely Lucas would be a bad shout for your 5th choice midfielder. He plays pretty much every game, he made more tackles than any other player in the prem last season and most of his passes will be 5-10 yard passes to Gerrard, Adam etc.

Moses is in my team now but if he doesn't do what a lot of people are expecting of him then we'll have to consider a change.

I have them both at the moment. It is a bit of a risk but no one else in Malouda's price bracket is doing it for me (have Nani too), except maybe Kuyt, but I already have Carroll. I had overlooked Drogba for a while but actualy I think he's stunningly good value at 10.5, and I'm happy to back Chelsea to burst out of the blocks with great fixtures.

C.ronaldo vs Nani this year?? If he can get Nani to score more goals then C. Ronaldo then ill admit Sir F is the best coach.

Have had the same team for about ten days now!
3 spots I've been debating though

    A. RVP, Sinclair, Holt
    or
    B. Carroll, Sessegnon, Zamora

If RVP is ruled out then I'll simply pick B, but even if he's fit option B has been growing on me!
    Thoughts?

He might, but Cleverley and Anderson look more likely IMO. Welbeck may play up front for the less difficult fixtures when the more experienced strikers need a rest.
