A brilliant Manchester derby in this afternoon’s Community Shield has set the tone for the upcoming season. Roberto Mancini’s side raced ahead in the first forty-five, heading into the interval two-up thanks to a Joleon Lescott header and a speculative long distance strike from Edin Dzeko that seemed to swerve as it flew past David De Gea. At the interval, City, with such a rock-solid defence, looked nailed-on to pick up the silverware, despite their opponent’s dominance in possession.

After the break, the “noisy neighbours†were soon silenced. Goals from Chris Smalling and Nani -following a brilliant passing team move- levelled matters just short of the hour mark as United’s attacking football proved relentless. With only seconds remaining, Nani sped away from the halfway line and capped a wonderful comeback by rounding Joe Hart to coolly slot home the winner.

In Fantasy terms, the game will no doubt spark a Nani bandwagon. The summer purchase of Ashley Young places question mark over the Portuguese winger’s game time in 2011/12 but there seems little doubt that Nani- last season’s top-scoring FPL- player- looks good for a place in United’s starting XI at West Brom next Sunday.

On the left, Ashley Young also looked the part and it’s worth noting he took his fair share of set-pieces; it was his delivery that led to Smalling grabbing United’s first. Young -like Nani- is priced at 10.0 but with Antonio Valencia not yet match fit, is likely to take his good form to the Hawthorns in gameweek 1.

Despite Javier Hernandez being sidelined with concussion, Sir Alex Ferguson opted for Danny Welbeck as a strike partner for Wayne Rooney up front. His performances in tandem with the Mexican have shown Rooney thrives more with a pacy forward ahead of him, and Dimitar Berbatov was resultantly relegated to the bench. If Fergie continues along this line of thinking, the Bulgarian could well be a peripheral figure in 2011/12.

Chris Smalling started the game at right-back, suggesting he may offer cover in positions other than centre-half next season. Phil Jones was also played at right-back in United’s pre-season win over MLS Allstars, suggesting the likes of Rafael will have plenty competition for starts on the flank in 2011/12.

For City, Joleon Lescott carried on the goalscoring form that saw him score two games in his club’s final three league games last season. At 6.5, he’s 0.5 more than Vincent Kompany but his eye for goal may tempt Fantasy managers, particularly with Kolo Toure still serving a suspension.

Given their record of 18 clean sheets last term, City were surprisingly slack in the second half . Gael Clichy, on as a sub for Aleksander Kolarov, hardly covered himself in glory with an indecisiveness on the halfway line that led to United’s winner.

David Silva was the liveliest of City’s attacking players, always buzzing around and looking to pick up possession. Silva’s set-piece led to City’s opener and with a home game against Swansea the final match of game week 1, the Spaniard – priced at 9.5 in FPL- will surely see plenty Fantasy investment.

With so much uncertainty surrounding the availability of Carlos Tevez and with Sergio Aguero sitting out the match due to blistered feet, Fantasy managers were hoping for an impressive performance from the other City forwards on show. Mario Balotelli was never really in the game and priced at 9.0, would be a huge punt ahead of the game against Brendan Rodgers promoted side.

Edin Dzeko, playing as the lone forward, may have found the net but the goal was perhaps more of an error by David De Gea than a piece of clinical finishing. Dzeko, at 8.5, could see plenty investment if Roberto Mancini is unable to call upon the services of either Tevez or Aguero ahead of the game a week on Monday.

A stat more indicative of the nature of this game is each side’s total shots- United had 21 to City’s 8, a fairer reflection of the state of play, rather than the 3-2 scoreline.

I promised myself I wouldn't do this, but as the day approaches I find I can't resist temptation.
    An RMT

    Hart - Ruddy

I want coverage of city defence, not excited by Komapny rotation worries elsewhere. Hart will start almost every week

    Bramble - Gabidon - Enrique - Hughes - Cole

I think solid if mostly unspectacular, Cole and Enrique to start most weeks 1-2 of the others to rotate. Would like to start Luiz instead of Cole, but rotation risk.

    N'Zogbia - Malouda - Silva - Moses - Brunt

3 possible captains, 1 promising talent with probably further opportunies this year, 1 reasonably cheap proven points scorer. Again would love to save cash at Chelsea with Kalou or Benayoun, but can't guarantee starts (I am pretty confident that Malouda starts the season)

    Holt - Rooney - Zamora

Not entirely convinced by Wayne's supporting cast here, though Bobby should be good early on. Main reason I would like to save (though not prepared to yet) on Chelsea and bolster up front options.

    Alright chaps!!

Really sorry if I am repeating any questions that may have been asked/answered on a previous thread, didn't get a chance to log on yesterday for a chin wag due to the wife lol!

Did anyone in the Charity Shield Catch your eye for a late inclusion into your respective teams?!?

Smalling:looked assured at right back, do you think that Fergie is leaning towards him for that slot? Potential bargain or rotation risk?

Cleverly:A starter or one for the future?

Nani:Would I be mad not to include him in my squad, looks sharp and he is after all last seasons FF top scorer?

Did we learn anything we didn't know about City? Personally I didn't, same old city, I'll still be swayed towards Kompany even after the Nani goal. I still think that Silva is currently the only attacking option I would entertain at the moment.

    Thoughts guys?!

You said it all. All i learnt is that Yaya played very deep and i took him out.

Smalling is still a rotation risk

Cleverley is defs one to watch for the future but might be a short term option with fletch still out.

All depends on who you prefer really, both players could score really well

Nani is cheaper but once Valencia comes back you will always be left nervous as you await the starting line ups, especially against easier home games were you are constantly wondering whether or not to captain him!

Rooney will most probably play every game, score well, but is 12 million.

I, personally, will probably be going for Rooney as he is the best 😀

The thing is if Nani continues this form then you can take the risk. You can worry about Valencia when he comes back. Before then you've made some money on nani, he'll rise once he scores a brace vs WBA and you'll have a better idea of starting lineups so can always sell him if needed.

yeah - it is something to consider during the week.

I see myself sticking with Rooney though but we all know minds can change with FPL!

Is it just me or is there no players this season that are 'must haves'?

Last few seasons I was always worried if I didn't have Lampard/Fabregas/Ronaldo/Gerrard/Rooney/Tevez and my rival did...this season I'm not too worried about any players atm.

rooney the best at what? compared to the other english st out there maybe, lets see carrol, zamora, crouch and rooney.... rooney all the way.

          but

messi, ronaldo, eto and rooney... think not, it would be hard to fit him into the top 10 st on the planet right now, only hit 20 goal once, where as ronaldo and messi have hit well over 30 for 3 years. but then again if you happy with a 15 goal a year man, rooney is number 1.

and not to get into a who is better then who debate but apart from Messi/Ronaldo I don't believe theres many strikers better then Rooney...certainly not 10...

Smalling - I and others have been saying for a while that the RB spot will be rotated between Rafael, Smalling and probably Fabio. I think Rafael will start vs WBA but it could easily be Smalling.

Cleverly may have done enough to push for a start alongside Anderson against WBA but there are plenty of other players vying for that midfield spot (Giggs, Fletcher, Carrick). So again lots of rotation looms.

Not mad but he's definitely come on everones radar. Fergie has said he will start vs WBA and haven't heard anything else on Valencia's fitness at the moment so he looks a good shout at the moment.

From City we learnt that you definitely don't want Balotelli in your team ever. Yellow/red card waiting to happen. Dzeko would be a big risk but against Swansea it may be worth it. Silva looked quite good again, and the defence should be solid despite conceding three. Lescott took the number 6 shirt so it looks like it might be his to lose rather than Toure taking it straight back off him.

I'd keep an eye on RVPs injury, I think he'll start GW1.

If he is injured then Chamakh will take RVPs place and so you'll still have rotation issues with Gervinho. That being said, he'll probably start GW1 too 🙂

Not too sure about Malouda... Rotation Risk?

Simpson, Orr and Tiote are very budget and will not replace players who do not play very well.. Tough one...

As for mine I think Odem > Rodallega may be a good option and then Hangelaand to Hughes will save me some cash.

Wrong final answer. Having a 4.5 forward is a good decision. Just check Harewood first game last season...

...and check Harewood's stats thereafter...having a 4.5 forward means you will be lucky to get one good game out of them....then you are stuck with them because everyone else is more expensive. A 4.5 striker = pts hits, despair and at best 2pts each week with the off chance of one good game.

5.5m and the risk lessons. For 5.5m there are some good punts...but for 4.5m you may as well just play 14.

Sturridge, Zamora seasons before, the list goes on. There are always decent 4.5 forwards that are excellent 3rd subs.

    Given, Ruddy
Hanley, Kompany, Alcaraz, Dunne, Cole A
    Silva, Young, Kuyt, SWP, Larsson
    Bent, Gueye, Goodwillie.

Well, I was hoping for Wigan, Sunderland are skulking around too but seems to be swinging towards Bolton. Not sure if I'll keep him if it's Bolton, but he is wasted at City and should do well with regular starts no matter who it ends up being. I may, of course, be wrong. But still, worth a punt.

Just wondering when did Alex and Luiz return to Chelsea or are the even back yet?

If AVB has not being able to work with them in training or games i'm thinking he won't give them a start in GW1. Meaning i might take a risk on Bosingwa.

Alex played on the weekend and Luiz was out with a Knee injury after being away with Brazil, they haven't fully revealed how bad it is. Maybe nothing at all or a couple of weeks. Bosingwa is a risk I would go with Ivanovic personally!

About time for a captain poll I think in the middle column.

My current choices are between Carroll and Silva. I'm thinking Home advantage and proven scorer (in Carroll's case) and proven assister (in silva's)

Dzeko is the crazy man punt that could pay off....do I dare?

There is a big danger in ignoring some players who are going to be real assets just because they may be missing for the first gameweek. VdV, Suarez, Aguero, Sturridge and now potentially RvP fall into this category. All could be big assets within the first five weeks, yet some people are thinking of excluding them from their initial squad.

My advice, for what it's worth, is to pick a squad for the first part of the season - not just GW1. I am not a great fan of using the WC too early.

that's a lot in defence...very slim chance of bonuses in defence, but can't argue with those choices.

My big guns so far are nani, rooney, carroll and silva...with an option to turn one into either drog or malouda if needed in game two.

Yeah I may reconsider the amount spent in defence but other than Nani I don't know who else I really want in midfield. Silva maybe, but I'd prefer Tevez or Aguero if I knew either was going to start!

Man City is a minefield. Think Silva is the safest bet for assists at this stage until we can work out who is going to make them into goals. I'm giving Aguero a couple more weeks to see. I'm sick of Tevez...even when I had him last season he had this annoying knack of getting 2pts when I captained him and 15 when I didn't.

Dzecko is probably the other worthwhile punt. Even if balotelli gets the nod over him he will at least get on the pitch for half an hour. I think he'll start. He was awesome in the chamoions league before he joined Man City so clearly has great potential.

Rooney will start nearly every game and is on pens. If I go for Nani I don't really know which striker I'd replace Rooney with. I could go

        N'Zog to nani

        Rooney to Bent

Not sure I like having all my money used and no easy way to get in a 11-12m striker though.
