A brilliant Manchester derby in this afternoon’s Community Shield has set the tone for the upcoming season. Roberto Mancini’s side raced ahead in the first forty-five, heading into the interval two-up thanks to a Joleon Lescott header and a speculative long distance strike from Edin Dzeko that seemed to swerve as it flew past David De Gea. At the interval, City, with such a rock-solid defence, looked nailed-on to pick up the silverware, despite their opponent’s dominance in possession.

After the break, the “noisy neighbours” were soon silenced. Goals from Chris Smalling and Nani -following a brilliant passing team move- levelled matters just short of the hour mark as United’s attacking football proved relentless. With only seconds remaining, Nani sped away from the halfway line and capped a wonderful comeback by rounding Joe Hart to coolly slot home the winner.

In Fantasy terms, the game will no doubt spark a Nani bandwagon. The summer purchase of Ashley Young places question mark over the Portuguese winger’s game time in 2011/12 but there seems little doubt that Nani- last season’s top-scoring FPL- player- looks good for a place in United’s starting XI at West Brom next Sunday.

On the left, Ashley Young also looked the part and it’s worth noting he took his fair share of set-pieces; it was his delivery that led to Smalling grabbing United’s first. Young -like Nani- is priced at 10.0 but with Antonio Valencia not yet match fit, is likely to take his good form to the Hawthorns in gameweek 1.

Despite Javier Hernandez being sidelined with concussion, Sir Alex Ferguson opted for Danny Welbeck as a strike partner for Wayne Rooney up front. His performances in tandem with the Mexican have shown Rooney thrives more with a pacy forward ahead of him, and Dimitar Berbatov was resultantly relegated to the bench. If Fergie continues along this line of thinking, the Bulgarian could well be a peripheral figure in 2011/12.

Chris Smalling started the game at right-back, suggesting he may offer cover in positions other than centre-half next season. Phil Jones was also played at right-back in United’s pre-season win over MLS Allstars, suggesting the likes of Rafael will have plenty competition for starts on the flank in 2011/12.

For City, Joleon Lescott carried on the goalscoring form that saw him score two games in his club’s final three league games last season. At 6.5, he’s 0.5 more than Vincent Kompany but his eye for goal may tempt Fantasy managers, particularly with Kolo Toure still serving a suspension.

Given their record of 18 clean sheets last term, City were surprisingly slack in the second half . Gael Clichy, on as a sub for Aleksander Kolarov, hardly covered himself in glory with an indecisiveness on the halfway line that led to United’s winner.

David Silva was the liveliest of City’s attacking players, always buzzing around and looking to pick up possession. Silva’s set-piece led to City’s opener and with a home game against Swansea the final match of game week 1, the Spaniard – priced at 9.5 in FPL- will surely see plenty Fantasy investment.

With so much uncertainty surrounding the availability of Carlos Tevez and with Sergio Aguero sitting out the match due to blistered feet, Fantasy managers were hoping for an impressive performance from the other City forwards on show. Mario Balotelli was never really in the game and priced at 9.0, would be a huge punt ahead of the game against Brendan Rodgers promoted side.

Edin Dzeko, playing as the lone forward, may have found the net but the goal was perhaps more of an error by David De Gea than a piece of clinical finishing. Dzeko, at 8.5, could see plenty investment if Roberto Mancini is unable to call upon the services of either Tevez or Aguero ahead of the game a week on Monday.

A stat more indicative of the nature of this game is each side’s total shots- United had 21 to City’s 8, a fairer reflection of the state of play, rather than the 3-2 scoreline.

    From the Telegraph

Patience, please. De Gea is a good keeper and simply needs to adjust to the English game. An illustrious predecessor, Peter Schmeichel, endured an awkward debut for United, and Jaap Stam was given the runaround shortly after joining by Nicolas Anelka in the Charity Shield, prompting one columnist to muse over “whether Ferguson has spent £11 million on a lamp-post”. It hardly needs restating that Stam and Schmeichel recovered to become revered regulars. De Gea has work to do but it is simply ludicrous to write him off now, especially as he made an exceptional save in the second period.

a 20 year old with less than 1 season below his belt Man utd are taking a big risk with him.

he was there 3 choice after all, Pep stayed at pool and nuera signed for byern.

I can name all good keepers that could handle the pressure of playing for BIG sides at 20 on one hand. if you make a mistake as an outfielder u team can cover for u or even in some cases as per micah richards u have the pace to make up for it. As a keeper its different 1 mistake and its in the net.
As keeper can play until they 40 it would have made sense to bring someone in to bridge the transition to da gea, buffon at juve has some years left in him and he would cost less than 10M would have been great.

There are better punts in the midfield and Rooney/ RVP is a must. So it does not seem like a good idea.

I think I'm going to avoid a big gun striker (RVP/Rooney) for GW1 and use the money I save to bring in Lampard GW2. Currently have Carroll, bent and Graham. RVP in for GW4 though.

But Nani got his best scores at home last year. I know they're not the easiest fixtures but Spurs and Arsenal are not great defensively and Nani and Rooney (who a lot of other people are considering) get most of their best scores at OT. I just think if you go for one of them you should have the confidence that they'll deliver at OT.

Can anybody offer some advice on defence.
    A) Simpson Enrique Distin Lescott Kompany = 27.0
(Hope Enrique goes to pool and rotate him and Distin)
    B) Simpson Bramble Enrique Distin Kompany = 25.0
(Hope Enrique moves and rotate Distin/Enrique and Simpson Bramble)
    C) Simpson Gabbidon Lescott Kompany Ivanovic = 27.5
(Just play Kompany Lescott and Ivanovic the whole time)

What do people think the best option is? I wish Enrique would just move.

I say the first one - you've got two (solid defensive pleyrs in Lescott and Kompany (with a bit of attacking threat) and the 3rd spot rotates well for favourable fixtures and both teams should be relatively solid at home.

C looks risky to me because Ivanovic isn't even 100% to play and if he does it might not be enough minutes to get the clean sheets.

B looks good but will Bramble play every game once everyone at Sunderland is fit?

But if Enrique hasn't moved by later in the week is it worth taking the risk?

I thought the general consensus was that Sunderland would be
O'Shea Bramble Brown Bardsley once they were all fit?

That was based on the assumption that he moves and is cleared in time and is confirmed to start etc.

You could always keep the same strategy but change to 2 other defenders that rotate (I personally went with Bardsley and Hughes).

No-one but Steve Bruce knows really I'm just giving my opinion. He's been playing Richardson at LB and shifting Bardsley over to the right in pre-season so that could intensify the battle for CB even more. To be honest, I went with Barsley because of his versatility, attacking threat and the fact that he was voted player of the season last year (and surely won't just be dropped)

Yeah, to be honest even if Enrique won't start GW1 if the deals in place I'll probably start with him.
I guess it could come into Bardsley's favour that he can play all across the back, surely Richardson won't hold down his place once O'Shea is ready to go?
            It's a quandary.

        Morning all.

It seems the Nani related Euphoria has taken over since his exploits yesterday - despite the fixtures past his 1st game (which is good but not the best) being poor and the rotation threat a real possibility in the mid-long term.

What about RVP then? Does his doubtful status change anyone's strategy? I'm sure it's a bit of a cheeky ploy from Wenger but what will people who have him do if it's looking unlikely for him to feature in game week one?

It's put a real spanner in the works as I saw that game being a goal fest!

Because the cause of the fire was in no way your fault, insurance should do you good. I've got roof carpet and every room replastered with insurance. I'm sure there'll be people near you going through exactly the same thing, so see what they are doing re insurance too. Good luck, it really is a shit thing to happen, but try and make the claim soon. Good luck

        Philosophical question:

        Which is better;

        Ivanovich + Lescott
        or
        Cole + Kompany

The first one has far more goal threat but has much more risk attached with the possibility of Ivan being rotated and Lescott dropped when Toure comes back. The second is far more reliable for starts but far duller.

I think a lot of people (me included) have had the Cole Kompany combo from whe they first made their team and have been reminded of Lescott's goal threat and possible 'nailed-on' status since yesterday's performance.

I played around with the idea too but the way I see it is Lescott would seem a safe bet, even if he missed the odd game he should make up for it with his goal-threat (until Toure is back at least). The thing stopping me from switching is Bosingwa's increased involvement and the competition at CB - it could mean Ivanovic misses out a few more games and makes this too much of a risk for me. Anyone disagree?

That's pretty much my thinking. I swapped S Taylor to Simpson and Kompany to Lescott last night (if you're going to spend an extra 0.5 on a goal scoring defender, why not make it the one you're actually going to play!). Cole seems like such lot of cash at 7.5 for just clean sheets and the odd assist, but Ivan seems like such a big rotation threat I'm not usre I fancy it.

Not a lot. Sears and Piquionne were woeful, Tomkins was better than for some time, Parker gave the ball away again. Nolan and Taylor, particularly looked like good acquisitions.
Cardiff look tidy to me, but I was disappointed in Whittingham.

Whittingham did a good job, nothing spectacular. He was the only midfielder not making his debut, and that was vs a very good one (even bringing quality like Collison on) so I was happy enough with his performance.

Nolan didn't do much, and probably regrets his big mouth now. If he'd stretched his head out for that chance on the goal-line it would have been 3 points West Ham, Cardiff wouldn't have come back. I didn't even realise you'd signed Matt Taylor til I saw the lineup!

Caroll is going to be the focal point up front. Suarez is clearly the better player but it doesn't always translate like that into FPL points. I'd going Caroll over Suarez and see how they line up, and how they play.
