A brilliant Manchester derby in this afternoon’s Community Shield has set the tone for the upcoming season. Roberto Mancini’s side raced ahead in the first forty-five, heading into the interval two-up thanks to a Joleon Lescott header and a speculative long distance strike from Edin Dzeko that seemed to swerve as it flew past David De Gea. At the interval, City, with such a rock-solid defence, looked nailed-on to pick up the silverware, despite their opponent’s dominance in possession.

After the break, the “noisy neighbours” were soon silenced. Goals from Chris Smalling and Nani -following a brilliant passing team move- levelled matters just short of the hour mark as United’s attacking football proved relentless. With only seconds remaining, Nani sped away from the halfway line and capped a wonderful comeback by rounding Joe Hart to coolly slot home the winner.

In Fantasy terms, the game will no doubt spark a Nani bandwagon. The summer purchase of Ashley Young places question mark over the Portuguese winger’s game time in 2011/12 but there seems little doubt that Nani- last season’s top-scoring FPL- player- looks good for a place in United’s starting XI at West Brom next Sunday.

On the left, Ashley Young also looked the part and it’s worth noting he took his fair share of set-pieces; it was his delivery that led to Smalling grabbing United’s first. Young -like Nani- is priced at 10.0 but with Antonio Valencia not yet match fit, is likely to take his good form to the Hawthorns in gameweek 1.

Despite Javier Hernandez being sidelined with concussion, Sir Alex Ferguson opted for Danny Welbeck as a strike partner for Wayne Rooney up front. His performances in tandem with the Mexican have shown Rooney thrives more with a pacy forward ahead of him, and Dimitar Berbatov was resultantly relegated to the bench. If Fergie continues along this line of thinking, the Bulgarian could well be a peripheral figure in 2011/12.

Chris Smalling started the game at right-back, suggesting he may offer cover in positions other than centre-half next season. Phil Jones was also played at right-back in United’s pre-season win over MLS Allstars, suggesting the likes of Rafael will have plenty competition for starts on the flank in 2011/12.

For City, Joleon Lescott carried on the goalscoring form that saw him score two games in his club’s final three league games last season. At 6.5, he’s 0.5 more than Vincent Kompany but his eye for goal may tempt Fantasy managers, particularly with Kolo Toure still serving a suspension.

Given their record of 18 clean sheets last term, City were surprisingly slack in the second half . Gael Clichy, on as a sub for Aleksander Kolarov, hardly covered himself in glory with an indecisiveness on the halfway line that led to United’s winner.

David Silva was the liveliest of City’s attacking players, always buzzing around and looking to pick up possession. Silva’s set-piece led to City’s opener and with a home game against Swansea the final match of game week 1, the Spaniard – priced at 9.5 in FPL- will surely see plenty Fantasy investment.

With so much uncertainty surrounding the availability of Carlos Tevez and with Sergio Aguero sitting out the match due to blistered feet, Fantasy managers were hoping for an impressive performance from the other City forwards on show. Mario Balotelli was never really in the game and priced at 9.0, would be a huge punt ahead of the game against Brendan Rodgers promoted side.

Edin Dzeko, playing as the lone forward, may have found the net but the goal was perhaps more of an error by David De Gea than a piece of clinical finishing. Dzeko, at 8.5, could see plenty investment if Roberto Mancini is unable to call upon the services of either Tevez or Aguero ahead of the game a week on Monday.

A stat more indicative of the nature of this game is each side’s total shots- United had 21 to City’s 8, a fairer reflection of the state of play, rather than the 3-2 scoreline.

For those discounting Rooney. A lot of it seems to be because of yesterday and the fact he "didn't do much". Just remember we won't be playing Man City every week, and also we managed to put 3 goals past what most would consider one of the most solid defensive teams in the league.

Again poorer teams he will get more chances, is a nailed on starter, and on penalties!

For 12m you want a bit more than that though. Regardless of the game yesterday I wouldn't imagine he will be scoring much from open play based on previous seasons and his positioning in pre-season.

A bit more than a proven premier league goalscorer, in a team that won the league last year, who put 3 past Man City, who is on penalties, in a team that gets 50 penalties a game.

He will score from open play, he had a bad start last season granted but came through in the end and started playing well, albeit Chico taking a lot of goals.

    Malouda or Lampard!?
I think Malouda will definitely start (given Sturridge is banned for first 3 games), but i'd always be more comfortable captaining Lampard!
    Also:
    Nzogbia or Downing?
Think Villa will be pretty dour under Mcleish and that L'pool will start well...but Nzogbia will have less competition for points at Villa

Exactly the problem I've got (Malouda & Lampard)

Lampard is obviously the guaranteed starter and penalty & FK taker. But Malouda is 1.5 cheaper and if he does play, will probably play a more attacking role (and he usually scores big v the weaker clubs)

Got Malouda in atm, one could even pick up a knock in midweek, that would make life easy 8)

Or would I risk Yossi then? 😆

A few things; It looks like Hernadez should be nailed on on his return, and play as the front-man ahead of Rooney.

Drogba's position is looking increasingly at risk considering the new signing and AVB's comments on Sturridge.

RVP's legs of glass strike once more.

    Lamps vs. Malouda

I currently have Lampard in. He's expensive but surely the only Chelsea attacking players who's 100% certain to start all of their opening fixtures. You can stick the captain's armband on him and not worry about him coming on for 20 minutes and doing nothing. He's on set pieces and has always had the ability to pop up with goals/assists from open play.

I'm looking at Malouda as my plan B - I'd say he's quite secure to play but I'm not sure the 1.5m saved is worth the loss of security and question marks over exactly how much he will score.

Thoughts? Drogba is surely too much a rotation risk from Torres and Modric/Benayoon talk is a bit too speculative for me at the moment.

Or, it's quite possible, Smalling wont start, Kolarov wont start, and you'll be left with 2 Newcastle defenders playing arsenal and a Norwich defender....

good point but pre season Kolorov has had shown to provide assists plus I think the team starting on Sunday for Man City will be the same that starts next weekend, also thinking the transfer for Enrique may go through this week. I do not think that Liverpool will be that leaky either this year.

Would rather Lescott to Kolarov if you're going the 0.5 extra over Kompany. Kolarov killed a lot of us last season with his empty promises of goals and starts.

I thought Kolarov would provoke a reaction, I think I will review again.

What about the midfield ? I am quite happy with it.

Unusual defence. Looks very high risk-low reward to me. I would have rethink.

I'm interested to know who you're back up keeper for Reina is though?

Is De Laet likely to be benched as soon as Ward is back from injury?

De Laet will be trying to make that his place for the season while on loan he is well thought of at Man Utd.

Also thanks to everyone for their feedback!!!

I'm thinking of writing a letter to Harry Redknapp or someone asking him to sign me for £1 a year or something. Just so I can legitimately say I play for a premier league club.

If your real name is Woodgate he unlikely to fall for that one again. Your best bet is if souness got a Prem job, he did sign Ali Dia after all.

Actually, Harry's got a fairly good track record:
        http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2006/nov/22/theknowledge.sport

        That takes some balls.

Anyway, I just emailed him, we'll see.

He'd be a viable and affordable 'in' to the Chelsea midfield. A bargain though? I'm not sure, he is the chief assist assister.

    Finalised my team for GW1-5

    Given,

    Kompany, DeLaet, Salgado,

    Lampard (VC), Silva, Nzogbia, Jarvis,

    Rooney (c), Bent, DJCampbell

    Subs: Ruddy, Tiote, Orr, Hughes.

Thats my team, i dont care too much about my shit defence, im gonna monitor Lampard, but he has great fixtures is still on Pens and i think will still smash it.
Villa have great fixtures till GW7 so i gone for Nzog and Bent and Given, will see what happpens.
Silva was onlz class yesterdaz so hes still in there.,

    thoughts?

      Solid team. Good luck.

    RMT please

    Given/Ruddy
    Cole/Kompany/Hughes/Bramble/S Taylor
    Young/Downing/Taarabt/O'Hara/Moses
    Carroll/Bent/Holt

Leaves £2m in the bank to switch Carroll to Torres or Drogba in GW 2 and then to RVP from GW 4.

Will get Man City attacking coverage for GW4 once their side has settled down a bit, probably either Silva for Young or Yaya/Johnson for Downing.

Longer term plans, if you can make any, are Baines for Cole around GW12, O'Hara to Sessegnon around GW12, Walters/Etherington for Taarabt around GW10, Spurs coverage from GW10 and more United coverage from GW11.

Obviously it's impossible to have a definitive plan from the off as who knows what will happen with form/injuries, but it's nice to have an outline in place and will hopefully cut down on 4pt hits.

    Please comment..

    Al-Habsi Given
    Baines Bardsley Riise Enrique Simpson
    Silva Downing Moses O'Hara Nani
    Holt Drogba Odemwingie

Want to upgrade Drogba to Aguero, and Silva to VdV in later gwk.. in which case I need to find 1.0 from somewhere

Al Habsi to a 4.0 and Bardsley to Bramble and theres your 1.0

On your team i like it but think your frontline is a bit of a risk. I would change Odemwingie to Zamora. WBA start with MUN and CHE so Zamora the better option.

Also you could downgrade Baines to Cashley to free up another .5
But I can see the temptation of keeping Baines (i currently have him).

And keep an eye on whether Drogs is gonna start or not.

So, will the Tottenham game be on this saturday if more trouble continues? There might be questions over London games and available policing levels.

    Given/Ruddy
    Rafael/Jagielka/Cole/Kompany/O'Shea
    O'Hare/N'Zogbia/Nani/Malouda/Moses
    Holt/Zamora/Carroll

I've put Carroll in as I'm unsure on Suarez starting yet... That being said 11 of these players have away days on the first game of the season which I'm not to happy about!

    A Jagielka/Holt/Carroll
    or
