A brilliant Manchester derby in this afternoon’s Community Shield has set the tone for the upcoming season. Roberto Mancini’s side raced ahead in the first forty-five, heading into the interval two-up thanks to a Joleon Lescott header and a speculative long distance strike from Edin Dzeko that seemed to swerve as it flew past David De Gea. At the interval, City, with such a rock-solid defence, looked nailed-on to pick up the silverware, despite their opponent’s dominance in possession.

After the break, the “noisy neighbours” were soon silenced. Goals from Chris Smalling and Nani -following a brilliant passing team move- levelled matters just short of the hour mark as United’s attacking football proved relentless. With only seconds remaining, Nani sped away from the halfway line and capped a wonderful comeback by rounding Joe Hart to coolly slot home the winner.

In Fantasy terms, the game will no doubt spark a Nani bandwagon. The summer purchase of Ashley Young places question mark over the Portuguese winger’s game time in 2011/12 but there seems little doubt that Nani- last season’s top-scoring FPL- player- looks good for a place in United’s starting XI at West Brom next Sunday.

On the left, Ashley Young also looked the part and it’s worth noting he took his fair share of set-pieces; it was his delivery that led to Smalling grabbing United’s first. Young -like Nani- is priced at 10.0 but with Antonio Valencia not yet match fit, is likely to take his good form to the Hawthorns in gameweek 1.

Despite Javier Hernandez being sidelined with concussion, Sir Alex Ferguson opted for Danny Welbeck as a strike partner for Wayne Rooney up front. His performances in tandem with the Mexican have shown Rooney thrives more with a pacy forward ahead of him, and Dimitar Berbatov was resultantly relegated to the bench. If Fergie continues along this line of thinking, the Bulgarian could well be a peripheral figure in 2011/12.

Chris Smalling started the game at right-back, suggesting he may offer cover in positions other than centre-half next season. Phil Jones was also played at right-back in United’s pre-season win over MLS Allstars, suggesting the likes of Rafael will have plenty competition for starts on the flank in 2011/12.

For City, Joleon Lescott carried on the goalscoring form that saw him score two games in his club’s final three league games last season. At 6.5, he’s 0.5 more than Vincent Kompany but his eye for goal may tempt Fantasy managers, particularly with Kolo Toure still serving a suspension.

Given their record of 18 clean sheets last term, City were surprisingly slack in the second half . Gael Clichy, on as a sub for Aleksander Kolarov, hardly covered himself in glory with an indecisiveness on the halfway line that led to United’s winner.

David Silva was the liveliest of City’s attacking players, always buzzing around and looking to pick up possession. Silva’s set-piece led to City’s opener and with a home game against Swansea the final match of game week 1, the Spaniard – priced at 9.5 in FPL- will surely see plenty Fantasy investment.

With so much uncertainty surrounding the availability of Carlos Tevez and with Sergio Aguero sitting out the match due to blistered feet, Fantasy managers were hoping for an impressive performance from the other City forwards on show. Mario Balotelli was never really in the game and priced at 9.0, would be a huge punt ahead of the game against Brendan Rodgers promoted side.

Edin Dzeko, playing as the lone forward, may have found the net but the goal was perhaps more of an error by David De Gea than a piece of clinical finishing. Dzeko, at 8.5, could see plenty investment if Roberto Mancini is unable to call upon the services of either Tevez or Aguero ahead of the game a week on Monday.

A stat more indicative of the nature of this game is each side’s total shots- United had 21 to City’s 8, a fairer reflection of the state of play, rather than the 3-2 scoreline.

    Given (Ruddy)

Lescott - A. Cole - Hughes (Wilkinson, Simpson)

    Nani - Silva - Moses - N'zogbia (K.Dyer)

Carroll - Rooney - DJ Campbell

I'm a bit cautious about how much time or starts Lescott and Campbell will receive. HELP!?

Lescott should get gametime for the 1st few games because mancini wouldn't want to rush savic into the team and lescott would be the the 1st choice before richards and onouha. Dj cambell should start a lot because he was good last season and I don't see any qpr striker with more pidegree in their team

Nani has been good pre-season and was brilliant start of last season so I'm not too worried about his form.

Still not sure I'll definitely have him GW1, may spread the love around and opt for another team represented.

        Sounds like I need a re-think 🙂

May get rid of Nani for a cheaper mid and upgrade attack. Maybe look at Drogba/Torres. Like I said above, may get rid of Kompany/Lescott for a Chelsea defender when I know better who's going to start.

I am thinking of doing something similar to your defence. Double on Lescott and Kompany. How long will you keep both and who would you downgrade one of them to? I want nani and malouda but going for nani and silva. Anyone explain the AJ love? Surely DJ/Holt more likely to start at that price?

See also VDV, there will be times when he's absolute gold, but they've got such a tough start. I'd definitely be looking at ways to load up on City and Chelsea - you've currently only got one players from the two teams who have the best starts (considering how good they are).

Would like to know that myself, Oshea is injured but only short term.

LB is a choice between Bardsley and Richardson, Bardsley had it nailed down last season but Richardson was injured most the time I think and I hear Bruce has a soft spot for him and always planned him to become LB.

I can't imagine they would sign wes brown and Oshea unless they wanted them for first team. Think that leaves bramble and Ferdinand for the other CB slot, I personally think bramble. Ferdinand might play first gameweek if Oshea isn't fit.

I think that's the picture anyway, I'm not a Sunderland fan so could be wrong. Hope this helps though

Evening lads and lasses here’s my tweaked team got 1.0 mil left in the bank, do I need to spend it or shall I save it for later upgrades?

R johnson ur probably thinking wtf, I’m thinking of rotating him with hughes and seeing as he’s now confirmed captain for wolves, even if they do let a few in i’m pretty sure he’ll make up with attacking points.

    Al-Habsi (Ruddy)

    Kompany Cashley Johnson (Hughes Simpson)

    Nzogbia Nani Silva Moses (Sessagnon)

    Zamora Holt RVP

I’m quite content with it and am willing to take two punts with holt and moses…shall I upgrade/downgrade anywhere?

The more I look at Seesegnon's fixtures the more I have second thoughts about him.

Anyone else decided against a Sunderland player because of fixtures?

Liverpool and Chelsea in the fist four weeks and Arsenal and Man Utd both before GW12 - a third of their games are against very stiff opposition in their first dozen matches.

Why is Kompany such a sought after player? He played about every game last year, earned 18 clean sheets but - because he achieved very little else - ended up as only the 27th best points scoring defender with 95 points. I count 16 players of equal or lesser value who out scored him last season (Huth by a whopping 43 points!)and I don't see that he has much scope for improvement.

    23% ownership??? Include me out.

maybe downgrade baines for chelski coverage e.g. ivanovic/cashley to free up the minimum 0.5 spare needed for malouda

and maybe huth->hughes/hangeland for the first week gws since fulham's fixtures are relatively positive

Dudes, I would really appreciate a rate here. Can't work out what Man City coverage I want. Thinking Lescott but just see no value in defenders this year (hence all 4.5 and below). Thoughts welcome. Tried to get one big player from each big club to have captain rotations. Not easy!!!

OK, if you want to go with a cheap defense then I say fair enough.

Having done that, I'd say you need to get more value out of you midfield and attack.

Kuyt won't get the same returns this year as he won't be upfront. I think you can get better value than Lampard, but he's a luxury you can probably afford. RVP might be a bit too steep given that his fitness is in doubt and his fixtures aren't great.

I'd downgrade Kuyt (N'Zogbia could be a good shout) and that should give you the funds for some tinkering upfront. You should really have three front line strikers if you've got such a budget defense.

Think Malouda is better value than lampard, just as likely to start IMO and will play higher up the pitch and cheaper.

Don't think Kuyt will do as well as last year with carrol being fit and think Suarez will play behind him when he comes back, so maybe swap him for Silva
