A brilliant Manchester derby in this afternoon’s Community Shield has set the tone for the upcoming season. Roberto Mancini’s side raced ahead in the first forty-five, heading into the interval two-up thanks to a Joleon Lescott header and a speculative long distance strike from Edin Dzeko that seemed to swerve as it flew past David De Gea. At the interval, City, with such a rock-solid defence, looked nailed-on to pick up the silverware, despite their opponent’s dominance in possession.

After the break, the “noisy neighbours” were soon silenced. Goals from Chris Smalling and Nani -following a brilliant passing team move- levelled matters just short of the hour mark as United’s attacking football proved relentless. With only seconds remaining, Nani sped away from the halfway line and capped a wonderful comeback by rounding Joe Hart to coolly slot home the winner.

In Fantasy terms, the game will no doubt spark a Nani bandwagon. The summer purchase of Ashley Young places question mark over the Portuguese winger’s game time in 2011/12 but there seems little doubt that Nani- last season’s top-scoring FPL- player- looks good for a place in United’s starting XI at West Brom next Sunday.

On the left, Ashley Young also looked the part and it’s worth noting he took his fair share of set-pieces; it was his delivery that led to Smalling grabbing United’s first. Young -like Nani- is priced at 10.0 but with Antonio Valencia not yet match fit, is likely to take his good form to the Hawthorns in gameweek 1.

Despite Javier Hernandez being sidelined with concussion, Sir Alex Ferguson opted for Danny Welbeck as a strike partner for Wayne Rooney up front. His performances in tandem with the Mexican have shown Rooney thrives more with a pacy forward ahead of him, and Dimitar Berbatov was resultantly relegated to the bench. If Fergie continues along this line of thinking, the Bulgarian could well be a peripheral figure in 2011/12.

Chris Smalling started the game at right-back, suggesting he may offer cover in positions other than centre-half next season. Phil Jones was also played at right-back in United’s pre-season win over MLS Allstars, suggesting the likes of Rafael will have plenty competition for starts on the flank in 2011/12.

For City, Joleon Lescott carried on the goalscoring form that saw him score two games in his club’s final three league games last season. At 6.5, he’s 0.5 more than Vincent Kompany but his eye for goal may tempt Fantasy managers, particularly with Kolo Toure still serving a suspension.

Given their record of 18 clean sheets last term, City were surprisingly slack in the second half . Gael Clichy, on as a sub for Aleksander Kolarov, hardly covered himself in glory with an indecisiveness on the halfway line that led to United’s winner.

David Silva was the liveliest of City’s attacking players, always buzzing around and looking to pick up possession. Silva’s set-piece led to City’s opener and with a home game against Swansea the final match of game week 1, the Spaniard – priced at 9.5 in FPL- will surely see plenty Fantasy investment.

With so much uncertainty surrounding the availability of Carlos Tevez and with Sergio Aguero sitting out the match due to blistered feet, Fantasy managers were hoping for an impressive performance from the other City forwards on show. Mario Balotelli was never really in the game and priced at 9.0, would be a huge punt ahead of the game against Brendan Rodgers promoted side.

Edin Dzeko, playing as the lone forward, may have found the net but the goal was perhaps more of an error by David De Gea than a piece of clinical finishing. Dzeko, at 8.5, could see plenty investment if Roberto Mancini is unable to call upon the services of either Tevez or Aguero ahead of the game a week on Monday.

A stat more indicative of the nature of this game is each side’s total shots- United had 21 to City’s 8, a fairer reflection of the state of play, rather than the 3-2 scoreline.

your mid is looking strong, maybe switchy malouda with nani for the first gw then switching to malouda from gw2 when you know what formation villa boas is gonna use...that's my plan...plus stoke away didn't end too well for chelski last season so could be a tough game...

So was probably discussed earlier, but the thing about this Nani bandwagon....

    a) yes he's on form, and was scored top points last season, but SAF dropped Berbatov when he was on fantastic form, and he was joint top goal scorer. And the reason Nani got the chance to get all those points was that Valencia was out injured for so long, which leads me onto...

    b) he's been getting game time, but the key bit from the article was "with Antonio Valencia not yet match fit". Even if it's jsut Valencia and Young battling for the right wing, do you really think he's gonna play Nani on the left every game, and just wheel Park out for the 'big' matches? Surely he will keep moving people about, with so many great options to choose from. Nani's 10m is a lot to have sitting on the bench, especially if one of those dodgy budget bench warmers suddenly finds themself in your team.

    c) I say this as someone who is probably going to start with Malouda and Drogba, so that probably disproves my entire argument. As you were...

Some good points there - but for my money: Young is a left winger, who can play on the right and Nani is a right winger who can play on the left. Both are clearly better on opposite sides, so I'd say they aren't necessarily direct competition from each other. Nani has competition from Valenica and Young competition from Park. Each is first choice but will be rotated as SAF feels fit.

Aside from that completely agree. Personally I'm very much hoping that Nani doesn't escalate too far in vlaue before I pick him up after Utd's fixtures ease up.

Oooh, here's one for people getting Ruddy or Norwich defenders:

I was just re-reading the report articles on the promoted teams, and 7 or Norwich's 14 clean sheets were on the road. They tend to tighten up when away from home. So that's kinda interesting to people who were gonna only play their defensive players at home.

i have faith in adel scoring twice against the trotters and moses picking up a brace against norry 😀

and bent will score an opening day trick.

Will Hanley play when Nelsen and Samba return?

Briggs will rarely play now Dempsey is fit.

      Smalling is a rotation risk

      Too many risks IMO there

Captaining Moses is either genius or suicide but you seem to like risks

Is it just me or is every single RMT basically exactly the same? Either everyone that reads this forum is going to be in the top 10,000 or we are all screwed. Hardly anyone has picked Lamps, Kuyt, Van Der Vaart, Nani or Malouda, all of whom were the top scorers when fit last season. I see a lot of teams with very few obvious "captains", surely the key to the whole game. Am I missing something?!

Nah not every RMT is the same.

Sure there's a similar pool of players getting picked but that's always going to happen.

I'm not judging, just observing. Just think there is either a) little scope for picking a decent team without Moses, Taarabt/Sess/Sinclair etc or b) little imagination. Your name sort of indicates what I am saying about the lack of obvious captains in a lot of teams I am seeing!

Seen a fair bit of Malouda in RTM's. Guessing Nani will crop up once or twice after today's shenanigans. Beyond that, maybe the wise ones are keeping their cards close to their chests?

There were plenty of teams with Drogba and Malouda last year, but it comes down to how quickly managers react to form and fixtures and whether they stick or twist.

No, just people rolling with chat.
I can't see N-Zog and Albrighton both getting 165+ from a McLeish side. How does the prediction thing stack up??
Timmy Cahill all the way plus v-d-v, and load up with Rooney, Suarez and Dempsey.

if VDV is available that should cause the Nani bandwagon to slow. I know I'll take the VDV option if he is fit.

I have asked this question before, but once more - does anyone have any ideas about the following little dilemma please?

    2 out of 3 of

Silva/Downing or Sessegnon (with a defender upgrade from 6.0 to 8.0)

im not feeling the Sessagnon support
id go for silva, but you could really do with an extra .5 for Nani/VDV

anyone fancy taking a punt on CLEVERLEY? Its a big punt but after the match today; Quote:

    Reporter: “Anymore business?”

Could be a regular with Anderson....

Nah, i'd love to but still too much rotation risk. Carrick, Cleverley, Anderson, Giggs, Park, Fletcher could all play in that midfield 2.

Also, never believe a word SAF says to the press.

Carrick looked poor today. I didn't think Cleverley had it in him but the last couple of matches he has been brilliant.

AP, Wellbeck interests me. You said earlier he could well end up playing up top with Hernandez when fit. I think you could be right and at 7.0 playing for united could be an absolute steal. risky i know but would free up a good bit of cash to help make a really strong midfield.

I think Welbeck will start vs WBA, but he'll be back on the bench when hernandez is fit again. Could be good punt for a few GWs though.

united are capable of doing anyone in the league, city one of the tips for the league this year and they scored 3 in 45 mins. i do get what your saying but its a nice punt, bit of a differential as well i would think
