A brilliant Manchester derby in this afternoon’s Community Shield has set the tone for the upcoming season. Roberto Mancini’s side raced ahead in the first forty-five, heading into the interval two-up thanks to a Joleon Lescott header and a speculative long distance strike from Edin Dzeko that seemed to swerve as it flew past David De Gea. At the interval, City, with such a rock-solid defence, looked nailed-on to pick up the silverware, despite their opponent’s dominance in possession.

After the break, the “noisy neighbours” were soon silenced. Goals from Chris Smalling and Nani -following a brilliant passing team move- levelled matters just short of the hour mark as United’s attacking football proved relentless. With only seconds remaining, Nani sped away from the halfway line and capped a wonderful comeback by rounding Joe Hart to coolly slot home the winner.

In Fantasy terms, the game will no doubt spark a Nani bandwagon. The summer purchase of Ashley Young places question mark over the Portuguese winger’s game time in 2011/12 but there seems little doubt that Nani- last season’s top-scoring FPL- player- looks good for a place in United’s starting XI at West Brom next Sunday.

On the left, Ashley Young also looked the part and it’s worth noting he took his fair share of set-pieces; it was his delivery that led to Smalling grabbing United’s first. Young -like Nani- is priced at 10.0 but with Antonio Valencia not yet match fit, is likely to take his good form to the Hawthorns in gameweek 1.

Despite Javier Hernandez being sidelined with concussion, Sir Alex Ferguson opted for Danny Welbeck as a strike partner for Wayne Rooney up front. His performances in tandem with the Mexican have shown Rooney thrives more with a pacy forward ahead of him, and Dimitar Berbatov was resultantly relegated to the bench. If Fergie continues along this line of thinking, the Bulgarian could well be a peripheral figure in 2011/12.

Chris Smalling started the game at right-back, suggesting he may offer cover in positions other than centre-half next season. Phil Jones was also played at right-back in United’s pre-season win over MLS Allstars, suggesting the likes of Rafael will have plenty competition for starts on the flank in 2011/12.

For City, Joleon Lescott carried on the goalscoring form that saw him score two games in his club’s final three league games last season. At 6.5, he’s 0.5 more than Vincent Kompany but his eye for goal may tempt Fantasy managers, particularly with Kolo Toure still serving a suspension.

Given their record of 18 clean sheets last term, City were surprisingly slack in the second half . Gael Clichy, on as a sub for Aleksander Kolarov, hardly covered himself in glory with an indecisiveness on the halfway line that led to United’s winner.

David Silva was the liveliest of City’s attacking players, always buzzing around and looking to pick up possession. Silva’s set-piece led to City’s opener and with a home game against Swansea the final match of game week 1, the Spaniard – priced at 9.5 in FPL- will surely see plenty Fantasy investment.

With so much uncertainty surrounding the availability of Carlos Tevez and with Sergio Aguero sitting out the match due to blistered feet, Fantasy managers were hoping for an impressive performance from the other City forwards on show. Mario Balotelli was never really in the game and priced at 9.0, would be a huge punt ahead of the game against Brendan Rodgers promoted side.

Edin Dzeko, playing as the lone forward, may have found the net but the goal was perhaps more of an error by David De Gea than a piece of clinical finishing. Dzeko, at 8.5, could see plenty investment if Roberto Mancini is unable to call upon the services of either Tevez or Aguero ahead of the game a week on Monday.

A stat more indicative of the nature of this game is each side’s total shots- United had 21 to City’s 8, a fairer reflection of the state of play, rather than the 3-2 scoreline.

Two Aston Villa attackers for combined price of 17.5 million in any team managed by Alex Mcleish has to be an error.

theres a lot of risky players in there dont you think?
Moses has never done it, while Roddellega isnt a regular scorer - and your playing both Wigan's strikers?.....
bent + n'zogbia i think might not get as many goals under mcleish, suarez will be rested, hughes snd enrique are also a touch risky

If VIlla and Wigan both get off to a flyer your in business. But is that really going to happen?

Alright, massive re-shuffle. Although I'll probably be where I was yesterday by the end of the night.

    Foster, Ruddy
    Baines, Lescott, Hughes, Orr, Wilkinson
    Vdv, Silva, Albrighton/Sess, Hoolihan, Moses
    Rvp, Carroll, Graham

If Vdv happens to be out he'll switch to Malouda and I'll drop Albrighton to O'hara probably.
If Rvp's out he'll switch to Rooney or Drogs.
    Not 100% on Albrighton/Sess.
May bring in Bosingwa as I'm pretty confident he'll start the first week or two.

Thoughts on all of the above..?

At home I see Rooney playing behind Hernandez/other striker at home where the most points will be, I think it'll limit his chances of scoring as many as he'd be otherwise capable.

I'm willing to risk Anderson, he finished last season well and while today he played fairly deep against weaker teams he'd have more freedom. Or atleast I'm willing to gamble upon that.

Clichy does need to be changed after today, I'm just struggling to find a alternative which makes me happy. If only I could find an extra .5, if I write a exceedingly pleasant email perhaps they'll look kindly upon me and give it me...

Richard Dunne - seriously on this guy for the first few weeks. Great value at 5.5m if he can rediscover his form under a new manager and get a new lease of life.

Wont get bps under new system it would appear compared to old where 3 bps were not uncommon in a 2-0 win. Rewards are up top these days

Look deeper. Many a time when a defender scored they wouldn't get BP. Now if they do they are NAILED on.
I'm still picking a team on value and not bonus allocation. If a defender scores you are laughing and that value is far superior for certain players.

2 heavy up top too. 4 above 5.5 at the back.1 above 10 in mid and 1 above 7.5, the rest capable fillers.

              No Baines?

Dont know if I can spend that much on defence.

Ive stacked my team with fodder (who will play and have potential) and big hitters - 7 big players spine including Given at the low end up to Malouda at the high.

No Baines, not just yet. Need to see a few games first but can make the move easily if needs be.
I have one position at least in each area subject to change after GW1....as how it should be.
All this worrying about either A/B makes me laugh as it all changes anyway.

    Some thoughts on today's game.

    1. De Gea had a shaky start, but to be lambasted on here is a bit much based on 30mins. I see a decent points return this season.

    2. Similarly, Dzeko whilst looking decent, should not have scored that second goal. I am still wary.

    3. Can United convert Smalling into a right winger?

    4. Kolarov is still Lolarov. Unleash Clichy.

    5. Silva is an absolute Worldy. Different gear.

      Quite like it.

You're gambling on Drogba playing though - I might consider going in with funds free to upgrade someone to Torres or Drogba if a clear candidate emerges.

I'd definitely be keen to have plenty of Chelsea players though - is there any way of freeing up funds to get Malouda in for Downing? Not that Downing isn't a good player - just that for my money it's well worth playing the fixtures.
