It was meant to be a comfortable home win, an opening day Anfield stroll against Sunderland. With Luis Suarez passed fit to play and the £50m midfield trio of Charlie Adam, Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson all making their Premier League bows for Liverpool, surely Kenny Dalglish’s side would pick up the three points and start the season with a bang?

Suarez opened the scoring- a twelfth minute header made amends for an earlier missed penalty- and had Fantasy managers ruing the decision to plump for the safety of Andy Carroll, in light of the Uruguayan’s recent three week break.

The first forty-five saw Liverpool dominant- Andy Carroll had a goal disallowed and Downing hit the bar as the Reds threatened to put the match beyond their visitors’ reach. For those of us with investment in Liverpool’s players, the second half looked promising..

Steve Bruce, however, had other ideas. Ten new signings over the close season suggests this is a side in transition but Sunderland showed a real battling quality that holds promise for the campaign ahead. A stunner from Seb Larsson -snapped up on a free transfer from Birmingham- stole the show after the interval as the Black Cats went toe to toe with their big-spending hosts and took home a well-deserved draw.

While Liverpool travel to the Emirates in Gameweek 2, Sunderland face a showdown with Newcastle at the Stadium of Light. If the Black Cats can replicate this type of determined performance in the Tyne-Wear derby, Alan Pardew may have more than just twitter accounts to keep him awake over the upcoming days.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

What an embarrassment. Norwich just bought another player and we have done naff all transfer wise.

yeah must admit a 0-4 loss at home is pretty bad for the first game

but look on the bright side, Blackpool won first game last season 4-0 or something and got relegated....

wait...hang on, is that a bright side?

I actually don't hate the new one...visually, but the fact the site had no downtime prior should have worried most. I think in the end it will end up being a better creature, especially with the speed in changes in browsers, apps, APIs and what not there was nothing more you could get out of that former version. They didn't seem to test any of the feature, it's cloudy as to who owns the point updates portion and if they were actually let in/given access to those server routes to actually update via the db.

Most disappointing part for me... I managed to persuade a lot of my friends to sign up for the first time, in the hope they'd share my addiction. That might still happen if these are just kinks that can be sorted out by next week, but more likely scenario, my mates who are new to this will continue to act puzzled as to how/why I derive enjoyment from this game.

My fix comes mostly from the rollercoaster drama of real time updates. I'm still optimistic this'll be sorted, but I doubt the newcomers I persuaded to jump on board will keep the faith if it isn't sorted soon.

Usual disclaimers about this being free apply. Sadly the changes in server have fixed something which wasn't broken.

I had such high hopes for this weekend. Been looking forward to it for weeks. Alot of banter at work discussing tactics and possible players to pick for fantasy football.

    And then this.....

Total anti-climax. I have a feeling the game is ruined for the whole season now as people will have an excuse that they didn't win the mini-league because they couldn't change their team

EA have fecked the site up. Caused me a great deal of stress, and they seem so aloof and arrogant about the whole saga. Not one apology. Plus the site is now harder to navigate and lacks its old edge.

I'm actually considering stopping the obsession with FPL now, who wants to wait for the scores to update when they used to be live, constant website crashing and bugs. I would definitely prefer the football when I didn't have to hope certain players score, just support my team and enjoy the rest of the games no matter the result or who scored. I will still check my team once a week perhaps, but not bother about it too much.

Fantasy football is an addiction and can take up too much time anyway.

Amen to that, Yateszy. You've hit the nail on the head.

It's taken today's shambles to make me realise what a distorting impact FPL has had on how I watch games. I only started FPL last year, but I noticed pretty quickly how much I prefer watching European football. Not being involved in their Fantasy competitions, you get a much clearer eye for tactics and player strengths too, and can appreciate goals like this one from Schalke's Raul today.

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpVz73RITuI

So yeah, I'm glad in a way that this has happened early in the season. I'm really looking forward to spending far less time on FPL and enjoying football again.

you're too kind yateszy. there might be a few unintentional plusses because of the revamp of FPL - a few over-obsessed folk might "get a life" for instance - but overall it feels like the new version of the game is step backwards. Last year I was half way round the world on holiday checking in from my mobile phone and seeing points update in real time. This year I can't log on from London and the points are all reading ZERO. If this is what progress looks like, leave me out!

Doesn't sound plausible. More likely that the scores just take longer to update than before, which isn't great I know.

Looking at the latest points screen, there are figures below the players that saw action today, but none under those that didn't, which suggests that they will update separately.

But seems that no live scoring anymore. Maybe it'll be by the end of tonight/tomorrow morning that it'll refresh.

If I was an optimist, I'd think that it might be down to the problems they've had and its just a one week thing. But I doubt it.

I've been away since thursday night, the plan was to finalise my FPL team in a cow field in scotland last night, but I couldnt get onto the site. I thought it was the dodgy internet connection, but from what I've heard... WTF??? Has FPL really been down ever since yesterday night? Has anyone managed to get on at all? Just checked my team, seems like the points have been lost as well. oh dear. and to rub it in, I have Formica, Simpson and Given on the bench whilst my highest scoring outfield player got a big fat 2. Bah

well, tbh the plan was to do Formica > Ramsey, Alcaraz > Gabbidon, that would have been even worse, but hey...

      The points haven't been lost.
I think FPL probably update them overnight for this new game.
      We'll find out anyway.

He's a midfielder, with extra chance of a cleanie at home to QPR. QPR conceded 4 at home, they'll lose 7-0 to Everton.

        QPR are pathetically bad.

Just seen your post 'avram grant - millwall legend' and very much agree! I'm in the same boat.

As I say, I reckon they'll sort it. Hopefully quicker than the 10 years it took EA to make a half-decent football game.

anyway, I was at the fulham game today and, some impressions, if it helps - I didn't think N'zogbia was half as bad as some of the press reports make out. Villa were much better passing team in first half, and I think N'Zogbia will still come good, if he can link up his passing with Bent's runs on the defender's blind side.

Zamora looked rusty. Dempsey was totally peripheral, looked strangely uninterested in first half - probably in pre-season mode. Obvious point - both defences very good in the air. Hangeland still towers over everyone. Both teams struggled creatively in centre mid. No surprises really

we all know FPL is pooped so no point shouting about it really.
    defence:
fantasy wise warnock, gibbs, enrique and senderos emerging as cheapish defenders from some of the better defences in the league. enrique's score was tarnished today by one moment of switching off by flanagan. either i was watching a different game or gibbs had some promising bursts forward today, to me he looks like he'll get more assists than clichy did at arsenal and at a cheaper price (admittedly clichy didn't set the bar very high for attacking points).
    midfield:
the sessegnon OOP attention has possibly pulled our eyes over larsson at the same price, will have to see just how influential his set-pieces turn out to be later in the season. should o'hara struggle with the new bp system then it's jarvis or hunt if you want a wolves mid imo. o'hara's points were hugely bp influenced over the past 2 seasons.
as soon as bolton's fixtures clear up then eagles, petrov and possibly an OOP tuncay look great value (presuming tuncay comes in at around 5.5 again.
early substitutions worry me about taraabt, as does him alongside faurlin with campbell and bothroyd in front of him. unless he wants to have charlie adam moments of crippling your side defensively to chase attacking points i worry for him and more importantly QPR.
forwards: not sure what to say with carroll really. you can either look at it as a positive that he had about 6 chances or worry that he did and nothing happened. without set-pieces it's hard to justify him over suarez for me.
rvp looked both a bit isolated and unusually slack when he did get the ball. only gervinho looked like making anything happen for RVP. for all ramsey's promise he needs to have has best game ever just to fill the fabregas void. rosicky actually out shone him today i thought.
klasnic has a great scoring record for the minutes he plays, again like the bolton mids one to keep an eye on. with minutes klasnic will score goals, it's that simple imo.
fletcher > doyle. only a lack of faith from his manager ever threatened that.
di santo and roberts outscored rvp, suarez, and carroll. oops

I think about 6 will do it, he'll get crocked and be slower than he already is. Gervinho did look good, f**king Barton...
I think the best thing Wenger can do is have him play centrally (when he's back of course)and keep Arshavin and Walcott wide. Moses looked really strong as well.

I would be encouraged by Carroll today, any other match he'd have hit one or even a brace. The only thing is he going to outscore Suarez - things happen when he's playing.
I reckon the Bolton gushing is pretty kneejerk as well, they'll wobble as often as they play like they did today.
I'm well in on Gibbs as well, 5.5m, nailed on starter, others to keep guard while he marauds.

As AP mentioned as well, although I've been a Rosicky hater in the past he impressed me today, he just needs a better foot and more hunger for goal.

Could this be the end of FPL? They have had months to sort out this new website. Granted it's free to enter and has always been good value. I'm just so disappointed with the website now. Fantasy Football Scout's a bit shite now too and I've been here since the beginning. It's always the way when something becomes popular, it gets ruined, normally motivated by

Most people unable to log in friday night/sat morning to do their teams and now no points or updates and worse - no news from EA as to what is going on. The Premier League can't be happy with EA Sports.

23 points with Malouda, Kompany and Silva(C) to play. Sounds okay considering the last time I changed my team was last Tuesday.
