It was meant to be a comfortable home win, an opening day Anfield stroll against Sunderland. With Luis Suarez passed fit to play and the £50m midfield trio of Charlie Adam, Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson all making their Premier League bows for Liverpool, surely Kenny Dalglish’s side would pick up the three points and start the season with a bang?

Suarez opened the scoring- a twelfth minute header made amends for an earlier missed penalty- and had Fantasy managers ruing the decision to plump for the safety of Andy Carroll, in light of the Uruguayan’s recent three week break.

The first forty-five saw Liverpool dominant- Andy Carroll had a goal disallowed and Downing hit the bar as the Reds threatened to put the match beyond their visitors’ reach. For those of us with investment in Liverpool’s players, the second half looked promising..

Steve Bruce, however, had other ideas. Ten new signings over the close season suggests this is a side in transition but Sunderland showed a real battling quality that holds promise for the campaign ahead. A stunner from Seb Larsson -snapped up on a free transfer from Birmingham- stole the show after the interval as the Black Cats went toe to toe with their big-spending hosts and took home a well-deserved draw.

While Liverpool travel to the Emirates in Gameweek 2, Sunderland face a showdown with Newcastle at the Stadium of Light. If the Black Cats can replicate this type of determined performance in the Tyne-Wear derby, Alan Pardew may have more than just twitter accounts to keep him awake over the upcoming days.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Was listening on the radio and he seemed to do ok. Larsson seems to be the better bet though. Hogging set pieces and seemend involved in everything. I'll give him another week or two before i go jumping at him though.

I hope the irony of that statement hasn't eluded you 😉

Arse was one player with 1/2 the spine, graft, and commitment of Joey away from a trophy last year. Admittedly, the CC, but for Arse, a trophy nonetheless.

I wasn't 'feelin the love' because it was against Arse - not at all. Notice no mocking comment regarding Arse in my original post. I simply think that Joey, with his past and his current situation, seems to be on the rehab and is a monolithic presence within a team.

Of course I wouldn't want him manhandling Utd players ... but then I would hope they wouldn't be foolish enough to take the bait and lash out like that, either.

May I add that eric was a much headier player, and was in full control mentally (flying kicks and all...lol). Joeyy on the other hand I fear for the poor rockabilly. I'll bet he doesn't remember how he got over there to snatch up poor Rick Jamezinho.

He did get a chance to ask Joey, "what did the five finger say to the face?"

I do worry that he can be a liability, as he's just barely in control on the field. They should mickey his pre-game Gatorade with downers - just a touch.

Hmm. Touched an anti-Joey nerve, I see.

Yeah, I know King Eric, he's the one with the stones to b!tch slap a fan. He was the one with the intestinal fortitude to win a game through, what seemed as, sheer force of will.

Barton was being a leader for his team. He was imposing himself on the other squad. A performance from Eric's, or Roy's, own book ... I should think.

I like him too, and I typically fight for his underdog, intellectual thug, loyalty to a fault persona. But I don't like some of the teflon s**t he seems to get away with. and to pretend that was no different than the run of the mill 'oh get on with it mate' instance is a bit delusional. I'm all about the proactive leader jumping in there to influence (or more like obscure the view) touchline judges. But that was much more heavy handed.

Maybe we should translate all scenarios with a Man U player, then Joey barton...not so cool then. But we understand...nothing to see here, until chicharito gets snatched up, and continues to be yanked around. Used to be players went up behind a guy protesting for a card and pulled them up. Not yanking a player up by the shirt and cursing him when said player is in the process of getting up and NOT protesting.

I'm sorry, did you mention the law/rule that stipulates a red card for that in that above? I didn't see it. 😉

No, I wouldn't like it if he did that to a Utd player, but *that* would be me being a bit blinkered. There are lots of players I don't like, but I respect. If Barton galvanized his team against Utd to secure a draw, he would be worthy of my respect, then.

Y'know, it's a contact sport played by men. Some golf sensibilities seeping in hereabouts ... he 'yaked' and 'cursed'! Goodness me.

I did, he had a few chances, but I thought AJ looked a lot more like scoring. Also, Zamora came off while AJ played the full match which would suggest Jol favours AJ.

This bears all the hallmarks of an update that was technically driven rather than user-led. No long term player of this game would have voted for an end to live updates would they? Or decreased server capacity leading to log-jams and time-outs at peak times? I really do think some honest messages should be taken back to FPL sooner rather than later, or we'll all passively be settling for a vastly inferior version of the game we all knew and loved...

It is such a shame the new FPL site is so pathetic. It cant handle large number of users, was down most of the time yesterday and cant update the score.

Why the people responsible for FPL cant rollback to the old version of the site which was pretty functional???

probably said already, but can't say much good about the new FPL site. Even aside from the shambles of last night/today, one of the basic elements of the old site was what made it great. casual players won't care; they will check their team once a week, check their points on a sunday night or monday and move to the next week.
for me, the most enjoyable part of fantasy football is listening to 5live or getting the "commentary" from this site and flicking between mine and relatives'/friends'/competitors' teams as the games unfolded. the nerves jangle when there's a goal update on the radio, or a goal is announced on here, then i dive straight into the live scoring on laptop or phone to see the impact.
i just couldn't do any of that today.
the games were fairly dull in FF terms, but the excitement of FF has just, well, gone.
i sound like an old man, but the new site is clearly over-engineered when the old one did everything i wanted it to, and mostly did it well.
