As the dust was settling on a hectic, and at times bizarre opening weekend, it was time to pick through the scores, stats and highlights and scout out some more alternative options for this week’s ‘Differentials’. With dozens of new faces amongst the starting line-ups last weekend there were plenty to choose from, but in the end we settled on our final three. After last week’s ‘Differentials’ nearly outscored my entire FPL team, I’m hoping for another bumper week….

Russell Martin

Norwich skipper Russell Martin gets the first slot in this evening’s line-up. Coming in at 4.5 in FPL, he’s pricier than any other Canaries first-team defender and has suffered from investment as a consequence- while 4.0 Ritchie de Laet is owned by 110,223 Fantasy managers at the time of writing, Martin has been snapped up by just 5,553, which equates to 0.002%.

The club’s first home game of the season sees Stoke arrive at Carrow Road this Sunday and while the likes of De Laet and Zak Whitbread are kinder on the budget, Martin offers the greater potential. His raids down the right saw the full-back score 5 goals and picked up 2 assists for Paul Lambert’s side in the Championship last season; even if the home side concede, then, Martin’s attacking tendencies shows more promise at the other end of the pitch than the rest of the Norwich back-four.

Yohan Cabaye

Despite missing most of the pre-season, Yohan Cabaye impressed on his debut against Arsenal last weekend, and looks set to retain his starting spot for Newcastle’s tie against bitter rivals Sunderland. Without last season’s top scorer Kevin Nolan, Newcastle will be looking to Cabaye to provide a creative threat from midfield, and despite a dull game last week, Cabaye showed signs that he could become a key fantasy target over the season.

At Lille, Cabaye played a central playmaker role while also taking free kicks and penalties, and in the 09/10 season, he picked up 15 goals and 10 assists for his efforts. If he can produce anywhere near those sort of returns at Newcastle this season, then he will be excellent value at 6.0m, and his current ownership of just 0.9% will surely shoot up. It will be interesting to see if he takes on the majority of set pieces going forwards – Last weekend he shared free kicks with Joey Barton, so the jury is still out on that one.

Danny Graham

Any striker moving up to the Premier League from the Championship will find it much tougher to score, and as expected, Danny Graham struggled to get involved in Mondays game against Man City. As the central point of Swansea’s 4-2-3-1 system, Graham will get plenty of chances to score in easier fixtures, and he certainly knows how to put them away – he was the Championship’s top scorer last season with 24 goals, and also picked up 11 assists.

At 5.0m, Graham should slot into most fantasy sides very comfortably alongside a couple of big name strikers and with three home games in the next four against Wigan, Sunderland and West Brom, Graham should prove to be great value for the 2.2% of managers that have invested so far.

I still don't like a rotation of Given Vorn. Only if you plan to always play Given, it's OK.

Ward was good last season. He might be a good pick.

        Suarez bent my main dilema

Long term i think suarez so was tempted to go with him straight away/ the fixtures swung it though.

Although villa may be defensive if they do score it likely to be bent. Cant say the same with liverpool

      Looks really good.

Think you're overinvesting in mid price mids with Moses your cheapest choice, but if injuries do strike, you'll be in a better place than most.

Front line is good. Bent is a solid choice if somewhat short term.

is it a silly idea to have Holt and Graham up front? As two leading scorers last season, and no rotational or European concerns, they'll perform probably as well as anyone up to but excluding the top 4 (Ag, Torres, Suarez, Roon (Bent?)) points wise? Graham in particular?

I've had Graham in the squad since the beginning, so you'll get no argument from me on that front. Not quite sure about having both of them, though. I've tried to balance out the possible points coming from those teams by having Hoolahan from NOR. If you think that Holt is a better choice and still want SWA coverage, pick up Sinclair. I'd just be worried about using two FW spots on players from promoted squads, but that's just me.

I'd think that you'd have to go either Lampard or Bent on that one...I guess it depends on how you feel about McLeish's effect on Bent or AVB's effect on Lampard. Personally, I'd probably go Bent, but that's largely because I've got him and not even considered going after Lampard...

I was thinking that but I think Bent could catch fire against Blackburn.

Bent for fixtures 4 out of 6 home fixtures and could score in 5 of those fixtures in my opinion.

I've never got on the Sess bandwagon and had Hoolahan from the beginning. It's worked so far...

To be more explicit on my response, I'm not sure that Sess's additional 1mil is worth it compared to Hoolahan if you can redistribute it somewhere else...Sess over the long run might score more, but probably not enough if that 1mil is wisely spent elsewhere.

    Hi,

Looking to upgrade one or more of my forwards but can't see where I can do it. First-time player so perhaps my strategy of stacking defense is not sound??

    G – Schwarzer, Given
D – Ashley Cole , Huth, Roger Johnson, Baines, Hughes
M – Larsson, Nani, N’Zogbia, Ashley Young, Jarvis
    F – D.J Campbell, Kenwyne Jones, K. Davies

Been advised to lose Nani or Young but are there better choices elsewhere?

    Cheers

dont have nani and young one or the other and replace them with o hara or hoolahan or sinclair
pick one keeper of those two thhen get a cheap one to free up funds
as for upfront lose kenwn jones and get rooney or suarez in

You need to have a re-think.

Get rid of Huth and Hughes and get some 4.5 or less defenders.
Get rid of one of Young or Nani to Moses
Use funds to upgrade striker to Torres/Rooney
Get a 4.0 keeper also and work from there.

Way too much money in defence, there. You don't need all those unless you're planning on playing 5-3-2 every week ( and it's a bad idea ). Just pick two you like and then find 3 cheaper ones who rotate and give you extra defensive cover, just in case.

For example: Baines, Kompany, Brown ( Sun ), Simpson ( New ), Taylor ( Swa ).

You can play Baines and Kompany every week, pick whichever one of the other 3 has the best fixture and you're away! Then you can buy better forwards.

because easily aston villa can draw like 1-1
and everton might just win 2-1
i no its ok to have 3 chelsea tho because they will win 6 nil

Would it be insane to have Bosingwa, Malouda AND Torres? They have 2 juicy home games in a row.

AJ short term and Graham long term. I think that FUL is definitely a better team and with competition in Europe are in sync. That being said, I think that Graham has the most upside out of the three long term...

I really need to stop tinkering. I keep switching between Bent and Suarez. And then there's to Baines or not to Baines...

Think i've settled on this team:

    Given (Ruddy)

    Bosingwa, Kompany, Brown (Senderos, Simpson)

    Silva, N'Zogbia, Sinclair, Moses (Brunt)

    Rooney (c), Torres, Suarez

Who's the better choice for 4.5, Senderos or Woodgate?

I have 11 of those players!

I'd only go for Suarez considering you have N'Zogbia, but otherwise I'd have Bent.

Not sure when N'Zogbia will start getting points though. He was slight rusty and defensive in his opening fixture.
