When it comes to Fantasy talent, more often or not, you get what you pay for.

When the pre-season price lists emerged, we spent the weeks before kick-off lamenting the price of established heavy-hitters and harbouring hopes that a string of mid-price midfield talent could fill gaps in our squads. The savvy Fantasy manager could see the potential. There were secret meetings about the promise of Victor Moses, whispered pub conversations about the prospects of Jamie O’Hara.

Consistency comes as a price, however. When we take a punt on mid-price talent, we’re not in a position to rage when the points aren’t delivered. We will rage regardless but, when the mists clear, the reality is that we have to have patience to get the most from these players.

Or do we? With an international break denying us Fantasy action next weekend, there’s now an alarming gap between Gameweeks – a yawning void that can easily prompt the sturdiest of knees to twitch into a full blown jerk; particularly if the Gameweeks have so far failed to deliver.

There will be glares of frustration aimed at an array of players, many of which came into the season with weighty expectations on their shoulders. You can take the aforementioned Moses and O’Hara and add Scott Sinclair, Adel Taarabt, Stephane Sessegnon and, in particular Charles N’Zogbia – currently the third most owned midfielder in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. Should Chris Brunt and Stewart Downing draw further blanks in their matches this weekend, you can then throw their names into the hat.

A hit-list? A compilation of failing Fantasy talent that’s ripe for the chop? While the international break will tempt wholesale changes from the suffering Fantasy manager, short-term squad surgery has to be controlled. Our mid-price talent should surely be given time to demonstrate their worth.

The signs have been positive enough – Taarabt struck the woodwork twice at Wigan today, Moses had further opportunities and struck the bar at Swansea, Sinclair was also denied by the bar against Sunderland. Should we expect more? Did we really expect such players to deliver on their promise immediately?

The answer to that depends greatly on whether your heavy-hitters have been performing. If you’re without Wayne Rooney, Luis Suarez and David Silva, then their pulling power over the break will be substantial and is likely to prompt change. Come the revolution, the ailing mid-price midfielder could be first to go – downgraded to bench-warming fodder, sacrificed to bring in a big name elsewhere.

Such a decision has to be taken with care. That’s the thing about the consistency of a mid-price midfielder – just as we’re on dodgy ground when we’re berating its failure after three Gameweeks, we’ll only have ourselves to blame when it delivers on its promise out of the blue.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

But Aston Villa played awful football last season too, they never had any idea under Houllier either than to defend and then hope that Young or Downing could produce on the counter.

Anyone thinking of playing their wildcard?

I've got 2 free transfers this week, but I'm thinking of pressing the wildcard button

    1) To give me something FF related to do over the international break.

    2) I'm having a shocking start to the season and feel the need to get rid of Torres/Malouda/BentN'zogbia/ Baines(possibly) etc.

So, too early to press the panic button? Or better to stop the rot now?

I'm in a similar position Will. Have the two freebies this week, but I've about four players I've had a look at and feel I need rid of; Torres, N'Zogbia, Sessegnon and Sinclair. If I do just the two, I'm not sure I can field a decent XI in GW4...

And yeah, international breaks are boring!

So I'm afraid I can't really advise. But I need to make my mind up soon, as Torres probably drops tonight??

So, with 2 free transfers for GW4 and pretty set on Torres -> RVP - unsure for the 2nd transfer which needs to save me 0.9m to fund Torres -> RVP. Any ideas?

    Hilario, Ruddy
    Bosingwa, Dunne, Brown, Senderos, Simpson
    Silva, Nani, Sinclair, Sessegnon, Moses
    Torres, Suarez, Bent

Not sure how that saves me 0.9m.... :s

Thinking Nani -> Walcott (perhaps Arsenal overkill...)

Hey guys, any idea how I can get the 'My Team' function to work on total fpl? I've followed the instructions regarding setting up my Team ID and it still doesn't work. Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

I guess coz the FPL website has changed it means it doesn't work. Don't use it though so just a guess.

Can't see Mancini dropping him. He's been excellent and is getting better each game. However, with City's interchanging system, they might eventually be better off starting with Tevez and Aguero.

Can't see Tevez/Aguero being a great idea - they're very similar players. I think Dzeko has a safe(ish) spot for now if he keeps his form up. I thought it was safe enough to transfer him in last week at least 🙂

That is the beauty of Tevez and Aguero, they are the same, which makes it easy for them to interchange, take it in turns to switch between playing the lone striker and one of the 3 behind the striker throughout the match.

But most managers, the traditional types at least (which I'm 110% sure Mancini is) seem to like the old fashioned big guy + small guy style. Two small guys up front is pretty rare.

They're quality enough to pull it off but it does limit any long-ball or lofted crosses a little.

price drops going to kill me so was thinking:

    Zamora + Torres ---> RVP + Odemwinge

    or would Long be better?

If you can afford both, and don't really need to change the rest of your team, then get Odemwingie. I think he's on penalties too.

I think that Brunt took over spot-kick duties last season after Odemwingie scuffed a very poorly taken penalty wide.

Also, is he guaranteed a start yet with Long banging in a goal a game?

That said, he was a real star for me last season.

yeah, can't decide whether Odem will get the nod cos of how good he was last season or Long will be the main man cos he has had such a flying start =/

if they play together, will it be odem as a target man with long off him or opposite way round?

brunt with pens is ok with me =)

last season odem was their 1 main striker

long is cheaper so he is better value of those 2

don't normally go in for these RMTs but there seem to be a few clever/sexy/educated/useful/seasoned/experienced posters here right now (delete as appropriate) sooooo

    tiote/sinclair/young/yaya/jarvis
    rooney/bent/suarez

nowt in't bank, 2 free transfers

thinking of alex to bosingwa tonight, then focusing on sinclair/yaya to dyer/silva for a 4 pt hit, depending on tomorrow's city game

    any thoughts?!

Oooh you know how to get some replies don't you. I'm always likely to fall for a stunt like that.

Anyway I think it's a good side. In fact I wish I had it. I'd definitely do the Alex to Bosingwa to catch some price rises and then reevaluate when close to next deadline. Especially as you have two freebies.

Bosingwa definitely, before his price rockets as everyone jumps on the bandwagon.

Proposed move sounds pretty good. Don't see Yaya doing as well as last season. Sinclair slow to start but is a good player and 29 goals in the Championship says a lot. I'm sticking with him. Man City have good fixtures coming up, you need attacking coverage, as have no Man C forward. Swansea fixtures, by contrast, get a bit ugly. I wouldn't expect too many points from Tiote/Dyer.

Prefer Richards to Kompany for attacking assists.
