If he’s fit, he would play. That was the thinking of Rafael Van der Vaart’s Fantasy owners after yesterday’s announcement of his availability for this afternoon’s game.
The Dutchman had trained on Thursday and overcame the hamstring strain that had kept him out of last weekend’s win at West Brom. With a home game against Bolton, Fantasy managers were licking their lips in anticipation of another big points haul as the Trotters rolled up to the Lane this afternoon.

With Jermain Defoe having played the full game against PAOK in Tottenham’s midweek Europa League defeat, it seemed likely Van der Vaart would return to the first-team; even if it was for just sixty minutes or so. As a result, plenty decided to hold on, rather than mover him on for the likes of Gareth Bale.

Today’s lineup was a bitter disappointment. Defoe held his place alongside Emmanuel Adebayor up front, with the Dutchman restricted to a thirteen minute cameo that produced nothing more than a single FPL point. Bale, on the other hand, hit the heights yet again, with a goal, assist and clean sheet in the 3-0 win- a fifth double-figure haul of the campaign see him currently sitting on 11 point, with bonus bound to come, too. Right now, he sits on 80 points, only 5 behind David Silva in the midfield rankings and, priced at 8.7, still seems a bargain, given his flourishing form.

While it’s clear Defoe offers a viable alternative to Van der Vaart in Redknapp’s mind, Bale clearly has the left wing role nailed down without any competition. A jump of 0.8 in price since gameweek 11 is indicative of his rising popularity and after today’s game, more and more may make the decision to offload Van der Vaart, with the Welshman proving a cheaper and equally efficient option in the vibrant Spurs midfield.

    omg...just realized
brunt up against the well organized wigan defence and sessegnon at home to blackburn

another flop weekend for brunt and can't see sess having a dream day too.
give them another chance or use my 2 freebies to get rid of atleast one of them?

S'what happens when you have Carrick and Giggs/Jones in midfield I'm afraid. Although on the flip side we weren't half bad in the Champions League last season with them. The wingers seem to be having a dry spell, and width is a big part of the 'attacking mentality'. At least our defence has shored up, in the league at least. Rooney's form also plays a big part.

          Pretty much this.

Even when we were battering Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea our defence was looking very dodgy. Focus seems very much on improving at the back.

I have no doubt the form will pick up, just maybe not this side of Christmas. I'm happy grinding out results at the moment, traditionally United come good around the time the Champions League resumes anyway.

only option for me is Welbeck, but having already taken a 4 point hit I'm compelled to just bench him for a week and take him out week after, Silva, VdV, Bale, Ba, RvP and Brunt should cover me for 1 week when I can get Studge in.

I didn't get the start of the game, was Young getting a good reception? No noise from the Villa fans when he touches it as far as I can see, not that Villa fans make any noise this season anyway. They'd have no reason to boo, just wondering?

    rvp,bendtner,sinclair,silva,vdv are staying
so i thinking agureo and ramsey out for welbeck and bale and that would be a 4point hit but leave me 2.2m to upgrade bendtner and turner after the blackburn game next week.
my views on agureo are that if i cant be happy to captain him at home to norwich then i will never. rvp will always be captain unless hes injued and then silva, bale or vdv can fill the captain role
