The hangover from Wednesday’s Champions League exit will no doubt remain in the system for quite some time but United’s response this afternoon was swift and emphatic.

Bereft of their skipper for the rest of the season and with goals proving hard to come by, plenty had questioned the champions’ credentials after the embarrassment of Basel but, unfortunately for Mick McCarthy, Fergie’s team had all the answers.

Perhaps buoyed by the easing of his Euro 2012 suspension, Wayne Rooney returned to his form of early season, slamming two past Wolves in a stroll at Old Trafford. Nani reprised his role of last season, moving over to the left, with Ashley Young afforded nothing more than a brief cameo late on in the second half. The Portuguese winger served a timely reminder of his Fantasy worth, grabbing a brace and assist and sits on 15 points. Pre-bonus, this is already his best haul of the campaign.

Antonio Valencia patrolled the right flank and provided 3 assists. Incredibly, his 11 point return is more than his total for the previous fourteen gameweeks and will surely give Fergie food for thought, with Young’s owners more than a little nervous of United’s increased potency in his absence.

Having recorded four clean sheets in their previous five, United had relied on Nemanja Vidic to shore up their leaky defensive but with the Serbian no longer an option this season, attack seems to be the way forward once again. A dependence on clean sheets has definitely diminished and a return to the displays of the opening few gameweeks will surely see investment in Rooney and Nani pick up pace over the next few days and beyond.

The next six gameweeks only add to the appeal- (qpr, ful, WIG, BLA, new, BOL) and will have many pondering the unthinkable and taking the armband off Robin Van Persie, particularly with Arsenal rolling up to the Etihad next week.

Post-match, Chris Smalling admitted the players were keen to answer their critics after the midweek humiliation in Switzerland:

It was a big game for all of us. The manager has shown faith all season and it was up to us to show the fans we should be a part of his starting XI.

Following today’s result, some of them may just have earned a place in plenty Fantasy XIs over the next few weeks, too.

    anyone recommend me a transfer?

thinking about getting nani/mata in at some point, maybe both.

want to get rid of augero to sturridge to free upp funds, but augero is the only player in the mini-league which i have only. great differential? or too expensive?

OK I finally linked my fantasy profile to this. I have used my wildcard this week and currently team looks like this:

Any changes you guys think are necessary? I honestly think United have a better chance of clean sheets than most, and jones (OOP/in form) & Smalling are cheap options for united coverage.

Anyway - Please pick apart at will 🙂

good first 11 - only comment is that your bench is weak and you will have to rely on your bench during christmas rotation and injuries.

I'd consider to rearrange budget among Howard, Simpson, and Ferguson.

Howard is too expensive for me.
Simpson and Newcastle may not get much CS recently until they can sort out their injury problems.
Ferguson is not a good back up during winter. You need the one who play to deal with the weather.

Agreed with Howard being pricey, but for the next month I like his fixtures & he double gameweek. Plus he rotates pretty well with Vorm untill gameweek 23.

Who else could I put in? considering Swansea will probably conceed in the next 2 games.

Ferguson was merely a filler, I have 0.3 left so could shift things about in order to get another playing sub.

I figured this is the best time for me to play my wc as christmas coming up, and if it goes tits up, another wc in jan! thanks for your inputs

That's a bit of a waste of a wildcard in my opinion, you had a good side anyway.

Agreed I had a good side, but I still wanted a few changes which would of cost me 12-16 points if i hadn't played it. Don't see a better time to use it if I'm honest

Morning all. Got two free transfers, not too sure what to do.

1 st one probably best to change given, but not sure who for?
2 nd one probably upgrade defence, any suggestions?

Got £1.1m in the bank, current team is-

    Vorm, given
Enrique, Simpson, brown, Wilkinson, Taylor (swansea)
    Mata, nani, bale, silva, dyer
    Rvp, ade, ba.

Personally I'd go Given> Howard, (home to norwich, then home to swansea) - Plus a double gameweek in January.

Whack in easy united coverage (evans, possibly smalling)

So United are back to their scoring ways. Everyone bringing in Nani and Rooney or both? I know I am with my 2 FT

It's hard to say really. I bought Nani in as I saw the game and appears that he may have picked up his form and dropped a good MID with diminishing capital growth. The Roon's pretty pricey but depends what your capital balance is like I guess.

Have had Rooney from day 1 and kept him through barren spell so may as well continue with him now.

Less likely to rotate and is on pens. I'd go for Rooney and Mata if I had the money for both.

I am thinking of transferring in Nani in with my two free transfers. Obviously I have a bit of money in defence at the moment, so would need to raid the money from there. Who would be the most likely option of my defenders to get rid of? (Kompany Enrique Baines P.Jones)

Kompany, Baines if he didn't have good fixtures.

Yeah - I guess Man City don't seem to pick up cleansheets very often.

Bringing in Ba and Rooney (c) for an 8 pointer looks to have paid off, as long as Bendy and Aguero don't score 🙂
