The hangover from Wednesday’s Champions League exit will no doubt remain in the system for quite some time but United’s response this afternoon was swift and emphatic.

Bereft of their skipper for the rest of the season and with goals proving hard to come by, plenty had questioned the champions’ credentials after the embarrassment of Basel but, unfortunately for Mick McCarthy, Fergie’s team had all the answers.

Perhaps buoyed by the easing of his Euro 2012 suspension, Wayne Rooney returned to his form of early season, slamming two past Wolves in a stroll at Old Trafford. Nani reprised his role of last season, moving over to the left, with Ashley Young afforded nothing more than a brief cameo late on in the second half. The Portuguese winger served a timely reminder of his Fantasy worth, grabbing a brace and assist and sits on 15 points. Pre-bonus, this is already his best haul of the campaign.

Antonio Valencia patrolled the right flank and provided 3 assists. Incredibly, his 11 point return is more than his total for the previous fourteen gameweeks and will surely give Fergie food for thought, with Young’s owners more than a little nervous of United’s increased potency in his absence.

Having recorded four clean sheets in their previous five, United had relied on Nemanja Vidic to shore up their leaky defensive but with the Serbian no longer an option this season, attack seems to be the way forward once again. A dependence on clean sheets has definitely diminished and a return to the displays of the opening few gameweeks will surely see investment in Rooney and Nani pick up pace over the next few days and beyond.

The next six gameweeks only add to the appeal- (qpr, ful, WIG, BLA, new, BOL) and will have many pondering the unthinkable and taking the armband off Robin Van Persie, particularly with Arsenal rolling up to the Etihad next week.

Post-match, Chris Smalling admitted the players were keen to answer their critics after the midweek humiliation in Switzerland:

It was a big game for all of us. The manager has shown faith all season and it was up to us to show the fans we should be a part of his starting XI.

Following today’s result, some of them may just have earned a place in plenty Fantasy XIs over the next few weeks, too.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Van Persie 3, Song 3 (could go either way), Arteta 1
Albrighton 3 (very impressive stats), Petrov 2, Klasnic 1, (very tight between Petrov and Klasnic, Dunne close behind)
Adam 3, Suarez 2 (controversial I know, but Adam really could pip him) Maxi 1, Skrtel 1
Rooney 3, Nani 3 (again very very tight, if key passes count Nani will dominate, Rooney however has a massive 7 out of 7 shots on target), Valencia 1
Holt 3, Ba 2, Morison 1 (just holding off Crofts and Hoolahan)
Sinclair 3, Gower 2 (amazing passer/crosser), Vorm 1 (Graham could ruin the Vorm party)
Moses 3, Gomez 2 (quite tight between the two), Caldwell 1 (a massive 5 blocks)
May look like sitting on the fence but thanks to shots off target the one-nil ones look much tighter than they should be

Planning to do Ramsey > Nani and Brown > 4.0 or less for a hit before Ramsey drops and Nani rises, so...

Which defender for 4M or less is the best option until the January WC?

Main target is Wilkinson, but don't know if he will play regularly when returning. Anyone else? Could get Caulker, but Swansea fixtures look terrible (especially at home) until WC-time. Boyata is also an option, but I don't see any clean sheets from Bolton no matter who they meet...

worth Brunt - Nani for a 4 pointer.

I want to swap Westwood out this week so need my freebie for a new keeper, probs Hennessey. Or is it worth waiting 1 week?

I wouldn't take out sinclair. newcastle's defence is dodgy. they'll nick a goal at least. could be a swansea win as they haven't done so away from home so far.

Oh my, the scouts are so pro-Manure its hideous. Bet none of you are even from Manchester either... 🙄 So what if you beat Wolves 4-1? They're the worst team in the league. "Fergie's team had all the answers"? Laughable.

You won't be winning trophies any more.

To be fair, as much as you are a total clown, you do have a point. There is a clear pro-United bias running through the site, starting from the top, and it's a little tedious.

      http://fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2011/11/26/the-knee-jerk-bench-pressed/

Notice how there's no Chelsea wankfest after we also dispatched Wolves in convincing manner. Managed to keep a clean sheet too.

You better win. Going out of the Champions League and then losing your H2H match, he'll be on cloud nine and you won't ever hear the end of it!

Going out of the CL could end up a blessing this season. We'd never have gotten past Bayern, Real or Barca in this transition season, so would only have been delaying the inevitable. Means the strongest team can now get fielded every match in the league and get a good run going. Only 2 points behind City... and we always get better Jan - May. Bring it on.

If BPs go according to plan, you'll need VDV, Silva and Kompany to outscore Brown by about 22/23 points.

              Unlikely.

VDV Brace, Cheeky Silva goal or assist and a Kompany CS while Brown scores an OG. BOOM.

To be fair, Brown getting 1 point is very possible.

                  VDV - 11
                  Kompany - 6
                  Silva - 6

Unlikely, I'd be astonished if Kompany keeps a CS, but still very much possible.

Hopefully Bale doesn't play, then I get BAE and you get Dyer.

Depends which Chelsea turn up. If it's the side that lost 3-5 to Arsenal, you are getting pummeled. Also, Valencia were dreadful midweek, Chelsea were flattering to deceive. Ohhh yeaaaaah.

It won't be the side that played against Arsenal. We'll defend deep again and try to counter attack, which is exactly the way to play against City - as Napoli showed.

They just need to implement an ignore post feature. It's screaming out for it. Then instead of having to moderate his playground rubbish, you'd just have a retarded kid wasting his own time shouting into an empty room.

Or, he could go to ChelseaFansWhoLikeToRollinJizzWhileSelfHarmingFantasyScout.co.uk

Probably more up his street. 🙂

They obviously don't want to implement it, not sure why - must be a good reason for it. The idea that putting up with this gimp is 'banter' though is beyond ridiculous now.

Done my transfers for next week. And taken 4 point hit.

Phil Jones OOP and price going to rise.

Ramsey has to go and price going to fall.

    So Brown > Jones
    Ramsey > Gower

I was going to take the punt on Shelvey instead of Gower, but think need the guaranteed game time over christmas.
