The hangover from Wednesday’s Champions League exit will no doubt remain in the system for quite some time but United’s response this afternoon was swift and emphatic.

Bereft of their skipper for the rest of the season and with goals proving hard to come by, plenty had questioned the champions’ credentials after the embarrassment of Basel but, unfortunately for Mick McCarthy, Fergie’s team had all the answers.

Perhaps buoyed by the easing of his Euro 2012 suspension, Wayne Rooney returned to his form of early season, slamming two past Wolves in a stroll at Old Trafford. Nani reprised his role of last season, moving over to the left, with Ashley Young afforded nothing more than a brief cameo late on in the second half. The Portuguese winger served a timely reminder of his Fantasy worth, grabbing a brace and assist and sits on 15 points. Pre-bonus, this is already his best haul of the campaign.

Antonio Valencia patrolled the right flank and provided 3 assists. Incredibly, his 11 point return is more than his total for the previous fourteen gameweeks and will surely give Fergie food for thought, with Young’s owners more than a little nervous of United’s increased potency in his absence.

Having recorded four clean sheets in their previous five, United had relied on Nemanja Vidic to shore up their leaky defensive but with the Serbian no longer an option this season, attack seems to be the way forward once again. A dependence on clean sheets has definitely diminished and a return to the displays of the opening few gameweeks will surely see investment in Rooney and Nani pick up pace over the next few days and beyond.

The next six gameweeks only add to the appeal- (qpr, ful, WIG, BLA, new, BOL) and will have many pondering the unthinkable and taking the armband off Robin Van Persie, particularly with Arsenal rolling up to the Etihad next week.

Post-match, Chris Smalling admitted the players were keen to answer their critics after the midweek humiliation in Switzerland:

It was a big game for all of us. The manager has shown faith all season and it was up to us to show the fans we should be a part of his starting XI.

Following today’s result, some of them may just have earned a place in plenty Fantasy XIs over the next few weeks, too.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

If you had to pick one:

    Rooney? Or Nani?

Debating who to bring in.. I think Rooney will score way more, but Nani allows me to beef up the rest of my team in time for the dgw better..

    Thoughts? Please 🙂

Not rising yet. Most people still jumping on Jones. Rafael back soon, but Evans will no doubt drop a few clangers so Smalling could get shifted to the centre. I don't fancy United for clean sheets without Vidic they will concede stupid goals.

Sinclair (vc), Ramsey, VDV, Silva (Tiote)
      Sturridge, Aguero, RVP (c)

      2 free transfers; considering:
      Kenny--> Cerny

This game is such good fun! Have had a good day today bit still feel I'm left with many decisions to make....

    ....appreciate any help...?

A - do Vorm and Al -habsi rotate well? I reckon yes!
B - with 1.2 in bank is it time to upgrade Ramsey or Eagles to Ramires?
C - with cash invested in Silva is it time to seek out Mata or Nani as replacements?

I'm thinking - stick with keepers, Ramsey to Ramires, and Silva to Nani.....yes or no....?

A - I had exact same keepers as you and I went Al-habsi > Howard, Wigans defense is just... crap
B - Definitely get rid of Ramsey, but there are other options surely than Ramires? Walters for instance?
C - I wouldn't get rid of Silva, especially if you ever wanted to buy him back.

i dont rate swanseas chances of a clean sheet over the next few weeks, everton dont look like keeping clean sheets either (though they do have that double game week in w20 i still wouldnt touch them)

if you want nani/mata (nani would be my pick) i think your best upgrading eagles or allen but the only way i can see raising the cash is by downgrading suarez. Since man utd and liverpool have good fixtures i can only see that being worthwhile if/when suarez gets banned.

    Hi guys, current team:

    Vorm / Howard

    Simpson, Enrique, Kompany, Jones, Smalling

VDV, Silva, Ramsey (ferguson & pilkington)

    Van persie, Ade, Demba Ba

I know I have to get rid of Ramsey & Pilkington, Would this week be a good time to use my wildcard? I’m thinking taking out Ramsey & Pilkington, and put in Nani with a cheap mf, then downgrade Kompany/Enrique to cheaper defensive options (possibly swansea taylor).

    Advice welcome

I'm happy with that, seeing as we barely score.

    Evening all.

Not seen any stats yet or heard any in depth analysis of the games (instead spent my afternoon watching probably the worst Huddersfield performance of the last 5 years, and believe, there have been some good candidates for that).

Is it really likely that RVP will receive no bonus points? That would make an excellent fpl day, very excellent indeed!

What's the reasoning? Shots off target? Seen his goal, bloody cracker.

Why is RVP predicted to not get any bonus points?

Thanks, tbh I hope thats wrong. I also think Vorm deserves a bonus with his performance today

I hope it's wrong. The goalscorer in a 1-0 win seems to always get the points.

The BP system seems to have changed in recent weeks. Dempsey was the only goalscorer last GW in Fulham-Liverpool game but got no bonus points.

Need Some opinions. Thinking Mcauley-BAE which works exactly currently because I have 1.2 in the bank. BAE isn’t real close to a rise, 41% on total fpl but I'm gonna have to do it sorta soon if I'm doing it I reckon. Should i do this transfer. Team as follows:

    Howard
    Jones Simpson Mcauley
    Silva Nani Walters Larsson
    Ade Ba RVP
    Subs: Vorm, Brown, Naylor, Moses

Thoughts on Jamie O'Hara? Was thinking of getting him in but he seems to be much less effective when Wolves play a 4-4-2.

The Tour de France is not relevant anymore, and I didn't think it appropriate to include a sport where cheating is accepted as fair.

Evans is 4.4 at moment and will definitely rise by next week, if you want to free up some cash and have gd utd defender coverage then he's your man, followed by smalling (although Smalling the better player)
