The hangover from Wednesday’s Champions League exit will no doubt remain in the system for quite some time but United’s response this afternoon was swift and emphatic.

Bereft of their skipper for the rest of the season and with goals proving hard to come by, plenty had questioned the champions’ credentials after the embarrassment of Basel but, unfortunately for Mick McCarthy, Fergie’s team had all the answers.

Perhaps buoyed by the easing of his Euro 2012 suspension, Wayne Rooney returned to his form of early season, slamming two past Wolves in a stroll at Old Trafford. Nani reprised his role of last season, moving over to the left, with Ashley Young afforded nothing more than a brief cameo late on in the second half. The Portuguese winger served a timely reminder of his Fantasy worth, grabbing a brace and assist and sits on 15 points. Pre-bonus, this is already his best haul of the campaign.

Antonio Valencia patrolled the right flank and provided 3 assists. Incredibly, his 11 point return is more than his total for the previous fourteen gameweeks and will surely give Fergie food for thought, with Young’s owners more than a little nervous of United’s increased potency in his absence.

Having recorded four clean sheets in their previous five, United had relied on Nemanja Vidic to shore up their leaky defensive but with the Serbian no longer an option this season, attack seems to be the way forward once again. A dependence on clean sheets has definitely diminished and a return to the displays of the opening few gameweeks will surely see investment in Rooney and Nani pick up pace over the next few days and beyond.

The next six gameweeks only add to the appeal- (qpr, ful, WIG, BLA, new, BOL) and will have many pondering the unthinkable and taking the armband off Robin Van Persie, particularly with Arsenal rolling up to the Etihad next week.

Post-match, Chris Smalling admitted the players were keen to answer their critics after the midweek humiliation in Switzerland:

It was a big game for all of us. The manager has shown faith all season and it was up to us to show the fans we should be a part of his starting XI.

Following today’s result, some of them may just have earned a place in plenty Fantasy XIs over the next few weeks, too.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

      Possibly.

      However, since then he has dropped from 48% ownership to 28% I think. Aguero and RVP have more owners, Suarez as well I think.

    Who will get more points in the next 4 GW's Mata or Nani?

    I don't like the away games for Nani against QPR and Ful, I rate both of the teams defensively.

    Mata: wig tot FUL AVL
    Nani: qpr ful WIG BLA

    The 5th game is Wol for Mata and New for Nani. I would be tempted to play double GW players that week so I am thinking next 4 - 5 games. If the Wol game was considered in Nani would have been the answer, but now not so sure.

    I want it to make 4 point hit DVD to Nani this week, but hold of, due to the 2 away games upcoming for Nani. I might even captain DVD against Sun. Ok now already talking too much, but Nani or Mata?

    worth Brunt – Nani for a 4 pointer.

    I want to swap Westwood out this week so need my freebie for a new keeper, probs Hennessey. Or is it worth waiting 1 week to get Nani?

      I'd say yes to Nani as a 4 pointer. Brunt hasn't come up with the goods so far at all this season :-(. I'd probably wait one week to do the goalie transfer and just do Brunt > Nani?
      Looking at the difference in overall total points between you and me, t'should be me asking your advice though I reckon. Nice ranking and like the look of your team!

    man u were always going to beat wolves today. wolves' points will come against the teams around them. they got a goal which was a good finish from fletcher, but man u needed to bounce back albeit against one of the relegation threatened teams. they need to do it against the big teams.

    Will Drenthe fall this eve? Just noticed 2000 transfers out. With his ownership at 1% its not going to be that many for a drop. Tempted to abandon my Baines move to nip on the Naniwagon. Double everton seems very foolish. Got just enough for Drenthe -> Nani now.

    Which is best?

    A Drenthe-> Nani
    B McAuley -> Baines
    C McAuley -> Baines, Drenthe -> 6.2 mid (4pt hit)

    Just watched the highlights via ESPN Goals app which admittedly doesn't give a great deal of insight, but here are my initial FF findings:

    * The behind the goal angle confirmed that Sinclair's shot was on target, direction did change but can't see an overturn
    * Both of Demba Ba's goals were taken brilliantly, confirmed stud if we didn't know already
    * According to the commentator, Moses was a constant threat. Goal was a great finish, went close and trickery/anticipated fall to the ground won a pen. Now by far the best
