The hangover from Wednesday’s Champions League exit will no doubt remain in the system for quite some time but United’s response this afternoon was swift and emphatic.

Bereft of their skipper for the rest of the season and with goals proving hard to come by, plenty had questioned the champions’ credentials after the embarrassment of Basel but, unfortunately for Mick McCarthy, Fergie’s team had all the answers.

Perhaps buoyed by the easing of his Euro 2012 suspension, Wayne Rooney returned to his form of early season, slamming two past Wolves in a stroll at Old Trafford. Nani reprised his role of last season, moving over to the left, with Ashley Young afforded nothing more than a brief cameo late on in the second half. The Portuguese winger served a timely reminder of his Fantasy worth, grabbing a brace and assist and sits on 15 points. Pre-bonus, this is already his best haul of the campaign.

Antonio Valencia patrolled the right flank and provided 3 assists. Incredibly, his 11 point return is more than his total for the previous fourteen gameweeks and will surely give Fergie food for thought, with Young’s owners more than a little nervous of United’s increased potency in his absence.

Having recorded four clean sheets in their previous five, United had relied on Nemanja Vidic to shore up their leaky defensive but with the Serbian no longer an option this season, attack seems to be the way forward once again. A dependence on clean sheets has definitely diminished and a return to the displays of the opening few gameweeks will surely see investment in Rooney and Nani pick up pace over the next few days and beyond.

The next six gameweeks only add to the appeal- (qpr, ful, WIG, BLA, new, BOL) and will have many pondering the unthinkable and taking the armband off Robin Van Persie, particularly with Arsenal rolling up to the Etihad next week.

Post-match, Chris Smalling admitted the players were keen to answer their critics after the midweek humiliation in Switzerland:

It was a big game for all of us. The manager has shown faith all season and it was up to us to show the fans we should be a part of his starting XI.

Following today’s result, some of them may just have earned a place in plenty Fantasy XIs over the next few weeks, too.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I am hesitant. That's why I'm asking. He's the real deal BUT the upgrade from Pilkington(who was benched today) to Nani is a big one. Ba has good fixtures also and I can bump him to Ade for dgw

nice one. well done. So, are you going to trade Aguero for Roon? That's a tough one. I have the money to do that also. The other looks more inviting to me. One good thing about Aguero out for Roon is that it's easy to bring Ag back. If I go to Ba, I cant do that.

    Vorm - Krul
    Jones - Enrique - BAE - Brown - Simpson
    VDV - Mata - Ramsey - Walters - Dyer
    RVP - Ade - Ba

Going to wait till tomorrows games before doing anything, as I don't see Ramsey dropping overnight. The plan is (-4 pts)

    Ramsey > Nani
Brown > 4.0 defender (Remaining budget is exactly 4.0)

Seems reasonable, right? Which defender do I go for? I see Wilko as the best option, hope he starts tomorrow and keeps his place until the January WC at least.

probably kelly seeing he's an out and out right back where senderos isn't. think he might be worthy at 3.9m, fulham will surely keep a few cleanies. actually if kelly can't nail down the spot when the 1st choice right back is injured, then he needs to move as the manager would have to have no faith in him.

He's a good and cheap option for a Arsenal midfielder.. Unlucky not to get a goal today. Maybe transfer him out at the next WC?!

So tonight's the night. Another Saturday night filled with endless status updates on Facebook complaining about the miming, the acting, the crying, the drama, the result being fixed.

Yeah that's right, just another football match between Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Evans played better today, believe it or not. So i'd pick Evans.

So what's the likely back 4 line up from now on: Evra, Smalling, Evans and Rio?

Not sure how long the twins are out and Jones versatility make it all a bit complicated.

I think Evra, Rio and Jones are nailed on to start next week. Smalling or Evans or one of them or both?

When fit Evra and Rafael, then perm two from the rest at centre back. Rio and Jones I would think first choice?

Evening guys, difficult times coming...I have couple of ideas, hope you check those out.

    a) gw16 brown => jags, gw18 jags + ba => vermalen + sturridge
    b) gw16 brown => hibbert, gw18 ba => suarez (+ propably downgrading drenthe to someone 0.1 cheaper to get the money for suarez)

Basicly it gw16-17 jags vs hibbert and gw18-19 vermalen + sturridge vs hibbert + suarez...

Wait till after the STK game to see if he is getting gametime and is fit again. Provided you don't have Bale, I'd be keeping VDV. Silva, Nani and VDV would be the ideal three in midpark.
