The Pre-Match Preamble - Gameweek 38 Preamble

You can forget the season of goodwill. This, like every Christmas programme, promises to be a punishing affair on the anxiety levels of the passionate Fantasy manager as much as the sinews of the Premier League footballer. We should prepare ourselves for twists and turns; some freakish points hauls, a slew of cruel injuries and unforeseen rotation.

Some will get lucky – probably the guy you’re chasing in the mini-league. At that point, we need to cut the bleating – we’ll have to roll with it and come out the other side having resisted the temptation to chase points, or “knee jerk” proven quality out of our squads. Fight the urges, there are fixtures to come in the New Year.

The nightmares could even come before Christmas. Sir Alex may just go for the experience of Ryan Giggs and the industry of Ji-Sung Park to counter the usual verve shown by Fulham in Wednesday’s Craven Cottage meeting. Roberto Mancini has declared he will make changes for the visit of Stoke – we can only speculate what he has planned to counter the Potters style, or indeed, who he will sacrifice in order to cope with their physicality.

Will Gareth Bale shake off his ankle to face Chelsea? Will players like Ledley King, Rafael Van der Vaart and Demba Ba – individuals cursed by recurrent injury problems – be able to cope with the fixture pile-up?

Then there’s the added confusion of the effects of the impending Tube strikes on the London fixtures – will our gameweek suffer? We should asses the players at risk – and consider saving transfers until we know more so we can counter the issue. With possible Boxing Day absentees, now is not the time to indulge in a “vanity transfer”.

We shouldn’t bottle our wrath for after these events. Ideally, we need to prepare for frustration and have a bench in place to absorb it. If you sitting on Ritchie De Laet or Shane Ferguson, it could be time to prioritise their exit. Now, more than ever, we need a bench lined with active players – willing to contribute and at least offer the prospect of a few points.

So, yeah, enjoy the Bond Film, The Two Ronnies and the awkward gift swapping. Just don’t bank on too many pressies from a Fantasy Football perspective – we’re all set to enjoy “restless” rather than “silent” nights.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

When I read today that Steve Bruce was in line for the job as national coach of South Korea, I assumed that he'd heard that there was a vacancy for a monolithic dictator and sent his application to the wrong Korea.

Ba was the right call last week and was unlucky not to score a couple. I think RVP could do very well vs a dodgy Villa defence and was always going to struggle away to City.

There isn't much in it and Ba could be a good differential as most people who were stung with him last week will go back to the safety of RVP. Probably including me!

    Krul Vorm
    Simpson Kompany Jones Enrique Wilkinson
    Silva Bale Drenthe Walters B.Johnson
    Ba RVP Adebayor

    With £1.8m in the bank

Thinking of going Wilkinson --> Jagielka, and benching Simpson, Walters and B.Johnson

    *** Sorry for the repost:

    Hi guys,

I hope nobody i.e. Mark etc mind me posting this. I have just started this whole twitter business and would like to use it for some informed and funny FF and football related chat. I have finished top 8k in four out of the last 5 seasons, so hopefully I might have some good insight.

Is it also possible for some of you guys to post your twitter ID’s and then I can give you a follow back. Hopefully some of the regular brigade!

So please add me @jh29uk for some informed(ish) fantasy discussion! All input always appreciated.

    #getinvolved

    Thanks, SK

Simpson and No, can't see HBA starting might be a cameo but that 1 pointer will be cruel. IMHO, both Best and Ameobi are ahead of him in the pecking order and pretty sure Newcastle will be 4-4-2 on Weds.

Pardew believes Ben Arfa has a lot to offer and has indicated that he will recall the former Marseille man for Wednesday's clash with West Brom.

He explained: "We were a lot better Saturday and the chances of him being involved on Wednesday against West Brom are a lot higher because of how strong we looked defensively against Swansea. We looked like our old selves.

        Also, Best has a knock - shoulder injury ... I think it's 50/50

          Hold the back page!
          Didn't see that. Cheers HEC087.

No Cabaye and Best 50/50 gives Benji a decent chance of a start then...

So in summary, play BOTH Enrique and Simmo, and bench Ben Arthur?

Just how good is Drenthe and how likely to play decent minutes? Both this site and totalfpl have nominated him in their picks, and he could be useful looking at gw20\'s double. Also I'm worried about Bale not playing, and the quality of my subs (Dyer injured, and nobody that great who I could get in for him, Walters away at City, etc.)

    So should I:
    A) Stick on Bale, despite crazy price drops, good chance of not playing
    B) Bale -> Drenthe
    C) Bale -> VDV, Walters -> Gomez (or similar cheapie) for 4 point hit (I'm already planning on playing 4 defenders, since I won't start Walters)

Any thoughts? (Sorry for the essay...)

Wait until BBurn team sheet - play formica if he starts, if he is drop Evans, given that you have Jones. If he's not, drop Formica

    Krul
    Simpson, Brown, Jones, Enrique
    Drenthe, Nani, Silva
    Ba, Adebayor, RVP

    Bench: Vorm, Gower, Walters, Ward

0.4 in the bank, and 1 free transfer. Should I save my transfer for the weekend?

Also, who would you start out of Ward, Gower and Brown? Currently got Brown starting, although think Wolves might get something against Norwich. Opinions appreciated. 🙂
