Driving home for Christmas, we present you with the festive ScoutCast. Obviously only for those without passengers – we wouldn’t want to inflict this on unsuspecting souls.

A stocking brimming with the usual merriment, the episode comes with the annual added bonus of hearing myself and Mark exchanging “ironic” gifts as an act of “goodwill” one more.

Along the way we deliberate the Robin Van Persie helpline, the revolving doors being worked by Gareth Bale and Rafael Van der Vaart and the perils of double gameweek investment.

Merry Christmas from the ScoutCast!

Come pull your Christmas cracker here.

what i cnt understand is why chelsea splashed 20mil on a striker that they ddnt play yet and ddnt send on loan. how is a player supposed to improve if not by playing?
they couldv used that money to get a pacy defender like cahill and played with that high defensive line avb wants

2 - better to get a stronger striker than a stronger defender, the way the scoring is this year.

Sorry guys, repost from previous page...

    Westwood
    Jose Enrique, Jones, Shotton
    Nani (V), Silva, Bale, Walters
    RVP (C), Adebayor, Ba
Subs: Ruddy, K Walker, Allen, Simpson
    Bank: £0.4m
2 free subs available this week

Thinking Jones OUT, Evans IN and Allen OUT, Drenthe IN this GW. Takes cash to £0.9m in the bank. Then Ba OUT, Sturridge IN next GW. Would like to upgrade my keepers at some point as well. Any thoughts please?

well by your first comment obviously going on fixtures nani is the choice there, but i would rather have silva as a season keeper too regardless of fixtures. i think valencia is a bargain too, he should be nailed on with young out for a few weeks.

If i was picking one it would have to be Nani. I suspect City will have a couple of low scoring games in there whereas United are showing signs of scoring for fun. Ideally both though obviously.

i know walters is on pens but im leaning towards etherington instead of walters beacause
    1. hes sdifferential
    2. as its onyt short term i think etherington is more likely to get a big score where as walters just scores 5 oe 6 points every few weeks

    just my personal opinion.

cant stretch to walters tbh but do think etherington is a good shout for the next 3/4 fixtures.

for me i would have to drop sess who may also have hit some form. I might delay the transfer one week.

I've got RVP, Sturridge and Rooney, had RVP captain recently, and all at home...

Worrying thing is if Rooney scores a few, and then on the 27th RVP is on he bench, you're going to be sweating that he doesn't come on for a one pointer! But then if you captain Rooney and he does nothing, you're going to be sweating on RVP and cursing everytime he scores if he does start. You can't win!

So I'm sticking as I was as they are the only two players I've captained this season so don't fancy changing now to Studge, so RVP (c) and Rooney (vc) for me.

It could be a mental gameweek this one, 150+ for the winner!

I also have Vorm, Enrique, Shawcross, Walters, Sinclair all at home. Sweet! 🙂

Of course it is always possible, but I reckon they are fairly nailed on for the time being.

Having said that, I think you just have to accept that one of your big payers might miss a game over the next few weeks. The key is to ensure you can field 11 players at all times.

Never take out a defender for a 4 point hit. It's beyond silly, in the best case scenario and you get in someone who keeps a cleanie and get rid of someone who doesn't, you only break even. In the more likely event that neither of them do then you lose 4 points.

Attacking coverage for a team that barely scores more than one goal a game does not matter.

Long term it makes sense, for a hit, no. Komp is just as likely to score anyway.

Skrtel & Kompany have both scored two league goals this season...

Will Skrtel score +4 more than Kompany over the next 2 gw is the question? We've kept 3 clean sheets in a row, law of averages would suggest we'll concede one goal somewhere along the way vs Bla/Newc

basic mythmongering here shogun. I am rather weary of these "rules"

you do NOT need to justify a point hit in the immediate following game week

having said that, statistically it is more difficult to make up for a hit for a defender, however, with a high value/high scoring defender, it is easier than a budget option

but then again exo here is also talking about some kind of liverpool "coverage".. another myth

id rather go huth to be honest, with villa unable to do corners, but only if you need to free up some funds (which is the last piece to justify this hit, in my book at least)

I'm not against hits in general, but if you are going to take a hit then it is only common sense that you'd do it if you are hoping to get returns beyond the hit (it's a *rule*, but one you'd be stupid not to try and follow) - and here there is virtually nothing to suggest that could happen.

You're right that it doesn't always need to be justified in the following gameweek, but nothing here to suggest he can't make the transfer for free next week.

Sounds more like he heard Mark talk about it on the podcast so logic has gone out the window.

    My squad:

    Vorm, Krul
    Enrique, BAE, Evans, ShaX, Baines
    Walcott, Brunt, VDV, Walters, Dyer
    RVP, Adebayor, Ba

2 free transfers so how does Baines, VDV > Caulker, Nani sound for this GW?

That would leave me some nice funds free for tinkering over the next few weeks too.

I think pretty much every big player is a rotation/rest risk over the next couple of weeks, with the exception of maybe Rooney.

He plays every game and is having his best season for Arsenal so far. (Aside from his poor game at Citeh). Also no competition for his place as Arshavin is dreadful and the Ox still maturing. The Ox could be a good call when Gervinho goes to the African Cup though.

What is the situation with Stevie G. When would you expect him to reappear in the starting line up. I presume he will take pens and nick some free kicks from Adam.

Kenny says 'he could play a part' but I'd be surprised to see him in the starting line up vs. Blackburn. Maybe a sub appearance then a start vs. Newcastle. At most.

Fancy a sneaky punt on Etherington? O/wise Walters/Song/Walcott/Adam. I'd lean towards Walters given Stoke's fixtures and his pens.

Cheers. These are all names I have been considering. Walters is certainly an option and I had considered Song as part of a move that involved Rooney, which I have now decided against.

There really are a number of good options.

I think Mata is on pens if Lumps isn't playing.

I really am drifting towards Walcott though with his high potential and low ownership.

What is the obsession with 'differentials'? When there is a player who has a low % of ownership there is normally a good reason that not many people have him. The tricky part of fpl is generally to manage to cram as many of the top players into one squad. I understand that people may be chasing league leaders who have similar players but teams are never identical and are constantly changing. People should concentrate on putting out the best squad possible every week rather than worrying that it may be similar to a rivals. I for one will not be transferring Adebayor out next week so that I can get Gervinho in as a differential

Well there's differentials in general, and differentials within your league(s). The former is a bit retarded IMO, the latter is common sense if you want to make up ground.

I think if your team has 9 or 10 of the standard picks every team has, then there's no harm in a punty differential e.g. I brought in Walters this week, but now wishing I'd gone for Ethers (15% ownership, as opposed to 4% for Ethers).....

    Thoughts guys?

    Vorm
    Baines, Enrique, Jones, Evans
    Walters, Drenthe, Walcott(c), Larsson, Bale
    Van Persie (v)

    Krul, BAE, Long, Fletcher

    No money in the bank.

I'm 120 behind in my mini league and they've all got VP and they will all captain him so do I gamble on Walcott captain to try and catch up or stick with VP encase I drop even further behind??
Also is it time to give up on baines. Verm or maybe Glen Johnson?

On average RVP smashes Walcott's score so why would you captain Walcott?
Defenders score less than mid and att generally so downgrade Baines to someone like Caulker, play 3 at the back and get a decent striker to go with RVP

4-5-1 and close to 40m in goal and defence? Use your Jan wildcard as soon as it's available.

RVP captain over Walcott or you will almost certainly lose more ground.
