The giants are being cut down to size with alarming regularity. Bobby Zamora’s at the death volley, sweetly struck inside Wojciech Szczesny’s near post, was another blow applied to the Premier League’s big boys. This was just the latest in a line of recent upsets that have seen United, City and Chelsea lose to middle ground opponents as the New Year programme continued to provide Fantasy managers an unpredictable passage into 2012.

The Craven Cottage result also marked the end of another unremarkable day in Fantasy terms. Robin Van Persie again failed to deliver returns (it’s becoming a nasty habit now), ironically in a gameweek that will have seen thousands switch their attention, and their captain’s armbands, to double gameweek prospects in the Spurs and Everton ranks. With such slim pickings from Monday’s five games – the expectation on players form those two teams to produce is now weightier than ever.

Chelsea did at least make a recovery from the winding dished out by Villa at Stamford Bridge at the weekend. The Blues’ 2-1 win at Molineux today was a battle, a scrap that was missed by Didier Drogba and, more significantly, Daniel Sturridge.

We did at least get early warning of the striker’s potential absence and Chelsea have today confirmed that their leading scorer and Fantasy asset missed the midlands trip with a contusion to his hip – brusing in other words. His 16% ownership will be hoping that the timely break for FA Cup duty will be enough to see Sturridge make a return. Andre Villas-Boas has even indicated he could make the cup tie with Portsmouth. Regardless of his expected recovery time, with January wildcards fluttering, we’re already seeing an alarming decline in confidence.

Patience will be paper thin leading up to gameweek 21. With FPL managers handed the opportunity to refresh their squads, the dead wood will be shed. The trick of course, is to correctly identify those surplus to requirements – a Chelsea striker who has delivered well above his modest price tag and who is playing for a Euro 2012 spot, may not fall into this category. In ruthless times however, Sturridge has already become a casualty. Already he’s seen more sales in the gameweek than any other player.

Looking closer at the current FPL transfer trends – the likes of David Silva, Nani, Sergio Aguero, Ryan Taylor and even Jose Enrique are ranked at the very top of the transfers out right now. These players have been giants this season – consistent scorers who have served their Fantasy owners well. Let’s get this clear – these are transfers after the gameweek 20 deadline, they are not victims of the scramble for double gameweek assets but players cast aside, presumably as part of a wildcard shopping sprees inspired by another disappointing return.

The last few days have seen the Premier League elite humbled – clearly this has dented the confidence of some Fantasy managers. The thing about the Premier League’s best, however, is that once toppled, they do tend to get up again.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Kompany. Jones. Agger. Simpson. Caulker
    Nani. Silva. Bale. Dempsey. Dyer

Looks good.....but i would change Helguson and Dempsey to a more mid range striker and mid range midfielder. Someone with a bit of differential.

Thats just my opinion though....and im shit at this stuff ha

Runs on the board is the simple answer. They couldn't chase last test & Australia can't chase either. Teams that bat first win alot more tests than teams batting 2nd.

Sydney tends to deteriorate more than most aussie pitches thus making it harder to bat the later you bat. Good call by Dhoni imo they just had to withstand the new ball and the first session before lunch. They failed to do so. Advatage Aussies.

I'm on page 3 of my report on the Economics of European football and it's pretty depressing already.

Just did the calculations, and the total debt of the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Serie B is 12 BILLION dollars.

That's more than the entire GDP of Iceland.

    Hello gents,

Is this team in need of a wildcard or can I hold on:

    Vorm, Krul
    Shorey, Evans, Kompany, Walker, Wilkinson
    Bale, Silva, Nani, Drenthe, Dyer
    Adebayor, RVP, Sturridge

Ive got a lot of dead wood but can put out a decent 11.

    Thanks for advice

I'd hold ... that's a decent team, and there's lots of volatility right now, both real and FPL.

I'd stick until things level out. Then your way forward will be much clearer.

    defoe ready for wbrom clash

Jermain Defoe is eagerly anticipating Tottenham Hotspur's Premier League clash with West Brom on Tuesday night

“I missed three games in a short space of time," Defoe told the club's official website.

“No-one wants to get injured, it was a hamstring, quite minor, but I have to be careful, especially with the way I play.

“I’ve no problems now and I’m ready to go".

“West Brom have only had one full day’s rest, so that could play a part, especially with the intensity of the Premier League. The gaffer has pointed out a few little things to the lads about west brom and we have had a chat regarding my fitness and I told him exactly what I have told you.

      http://www.goal.com/en/news/9/england/2012/01/03/2827871/manchester-united-manager-sir-alex-ferguson-reveals-wayne-rooney-

"Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed Wayne Rooney will be available for Manchester United’s Premier League clash at Newcastle on Wednesday night.

The striker reportedly accepted a fine of a week's wages after a poor performance in training following a night out with team-mates Darron Gibson and Jonny Evans. Rooney was also dropped for United's shock 3-2 defeat against Blackburn Rovers on December 31.

Ferguson hinted the striker's fitness had become a concern and admitted the club are working to get Rio Ferdinand and Ryan Giggs available for the match at St James' Park.

”We're trying hard to get Rio Ferdinand for [Wednesday] and Ryan Giggs, which would make a good difference to us," Ferguson told radio station Sirius XM.

"Anderson should be better; he had 45 minutes on Saturday after four months out.

“There are no other ones to come back immediately. And Wayne Rooney will be available of course."

True, but its not like I will get annoyed if Bale outscores Ade. I went with who I think has the most chance of collecting big points, and am not going to regret it either way. (The fact all of the top scorers in my ML has given him the armband probably eases the situation a bit 😉

It's a fair point but I'm not sure it's all that different from a normal game week. The biggest effect will be if one player scores particularly high in BOTH games which I suppose is somewhat unlikely.

Ok, a small analysis of my first hit this season.

    GW3: Ba/Cahill ➡ Suarez/Jarvis. -13 points over next 3 game weeks. 0.3 budget gain.

The reason I took the hit was to not lose value, and to have players scoring points (and playing in Ba's case). Had I just done Cahill to Jarvis, and played Ba with a sub in hand, I would have immediately have 6 points more, but lost 0.1 in value. I wanted to gain money and points, but over the next three GWs before I wild carded out Jarvis and Suarez, I had lost 13 points on that trade, but after selling Jarvis I had 0.3 more of real tangible budget.

Was it worth it, or should I have played it cool and done just Cahill to Jarvis (taking hindsight out of the equation)?

The game's measured in points, not value.

Take care of points and value should see to itself. Personally, I don't mind a hit now and then - especially with this new BP system that gives 3 BPs to a goal-scorer (if you pick right, the BPs 'pay' for the transfer penalty) - but they need to be 'good' hits ... which in my mind means adding more points than the guy they replace within 4 gameweeks (or so).

Cheers, early days still - I have no illusions 😉

I have tried to be a bit more careful with hits this season, for sure ... but I have no problem incurring them if I see the short- to mid-term benefit. What I've realized, for myself, is that a little discipline can sometimes reward yourself -- sometimes it's better to have 10 players playing than to get a -2 for a pointless trade.

Frankly, with FPL the way it is this year, there hasn't seemed a lot of great options to be trading for. This DGW will tell if I should have taken a few ...

Agree with that. Discipline is the name of the game. Most of my transfers have been done early this season, to build up value which will be useful in this 2nd half of the season. So i've taken the risk of players getting injured in midweek competitions, to catch the price rise. Luckily it's paid off, and i now have the luxury of buying better players. Won't be as quick to do my transfers from now on though. The DGW should hopefully boost me up, and then i'll look to motor on after playing the 2nd wc

Yes, I fully subscribe to that.

I guess the idea was that if I lost value, I would be unable to get all of the heavy hitters come January. I see now that it might not be the case. I might get by with 2.0 less.

Looking back, Ba did not get playing time, but instead I should instead set up Taarabt (wig), and bench Ba.

And should another played have not started that weekend, Brown would have come off the bench with 10 points, hehe.

So yes, in trying to save some value, and jumping on the Jarviswagon, I lost a lot of points, and gained some slight value.

The January Wildcard can only be used after Gameweek 20 starts (2 Jan 11:30) until Gameweek 23 ends (4 Feb 11:30); as the January wildcard isn't available until after the Gameweek 20 deadline, the earliest these transfers will be active is Gameweek 21.

      Aguero.

Silva has 1449 minutes and he has score 107 points whilst Aguero has played 1230 minutes and he has scored 114 points. It doesn't matter if he is more inconsistent than Silva because he will score you more points. Also would you captain Silva?

silva. there is much better value around in the forward positions, ade, the yak, ba, sturridge. also mancini could bring in another striker in the window. aguero tends to end up with just 6 pts when he scores. silva would usually get 10 or 11 with a cs and bps
